SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Sheriffs deputies detained a man in Lemon Grove this afternoon, who may be connected to an early morning carjacking.It was supposed to be a routine check-up. A 76-year-old woman was going in for a 7 a.m. eye appointment at a medical office on the 3900 block of Fourth Avenue in Hillcrest.But she never made it.“The man with the gun pointed it at the woman, so I guess it was just taking place, and she scrammed out of there and called 911," a woman named Nancy said. She said her friend witnessed the carjacking happen from across the parking structure.San Diego Police detectives said a shorter, thin, Hispanic man with short hair approached the grandmother, pointed a gun at her face, stole her purse, and drove off in her gray Mazda 3.Officers notified all nearby agencies to search for that car.Then at 9:45 a.m., the car was found on Lemon Grove Way in Lemon Grove. But it was in bad condition. “A few hours later, the Diego Sheriffs Department responded to a hit-and-run that involved that very vehicle, the victim’s vehicle," Lt. Andrew Hoffman of the San Diego Police Department said. Witnesses said the driver of the Mazda 3 hit a parked red Honda Civic, veered into a pole, then ran away.For two hours, investigators set up a perimeter of the area and used a helicopter to look for the car-jacking and hit-and-run suspect. But they came up empty.Then at 2 p.m., detectives did a secondary search of the apartment complex.That is when one of the deputies recognized a wanted man and arrested him. “I guess the guy walked out of the apartment, the other officer saw him from the back of the cop car, must have recognized him," witness Floyd Bloom said. "So that’s when they yanked him out of the car. But he reached for the officer’s taser and his gun. And so they tased him.”San Diego sheriffs deputies said the man they detained is a tall, thin Caucasian man, who was possibly wearing a disguise.Detectives said a curly, black-haired wig fell off of the man during his struggle with police. They also found a rifle and ammunition in the back of his trunk.San Diego County Sheriffs deputies detained the man, then handed him over to the San Diego Police department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two UC San Diego Health workers have tested positive for COVID-19, officials with the medical system announced Saturday.UCSD Health said in a statement that the workers "are recuperating at home and doing well," officials said."Both infected health workers sought medical assessment after exhibiting key respiratory symptoms, and were tested," according to UCSD Health.University officials cite "exposure and infection in the community" as reasons for the workers contracting the virus, rather than from travel or a patient."UC San Diego Health has launched an extensive effort to identify any patients or health system colleagues who may have been in recent contact with either of the two health workers," officials said.The group operates three hospitals: UC San Diego Medical Center in Hillcrest, Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla, and Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center also in La Jolla. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With San Diego County back in the purple tier, religious gatherings have to move back outdoors.The first Sunday back in California’s most restrictive tier and Rock Church held five outdoor services around the county, but this is not new for them. The megachurch moved to live streaming of services at the beginning of the pandemic, then added in outdoor services about six weeks ago.In the red tier, religious services could hold indoor services at 25% capacity or 100 people, whichever was fewer. Point Loma’s Pastor Travis Gibson said during this time, they had the option to move outdoors, but with 7,000 people attending Point Loma’s services alone, it wasn’t worth it.“One hundred people is not even the volunteers so this is the best option,” he said, standing outside after an outdoor service.RELATED: San Diego houses of worship told to move services outside by SaturdayHe said they have anywhere from 50,000 to 75,000 people watching their live streamed services every week, with only about 1,000 people coming to this new outside setup, but they’re happy to be able to give different worship options to their members.“There are so many ways to worship God. This is the second time churches were asked to move outside. He's raised hundreds of dollars to get it done.According to resident Adam Huntington, overgrown grass, untamed trees, and grimy sidewalks are just some of the mucky issues surrounding Pacific Beach.Huntington has been living in Pacific Beach for at least two decades."You've got beautiful architecture, beautiful masonry, that's just getting covered by grime and dirt."Huntington shared a video with 10News of a cruddy sidewalk on Garnet Avenue, one of Pacific Beach's main streets."We're in the middle of a pandemic right now," says Huntington. "We have an extremely unhealthy, unclean environment, and we force all of our restaurants to go outside and serve people."He hired a private company to power wash another area of Garnet Avenue over the weekend. The funds were raised by a GoFund Me Page. The cost of cleaning was ,200."We have people all over this community, wondering where our services are."We asked the city about why it's not using its services to clean up the area. A spokesperson said they don't have a statement at this time but encouraged anyone with a concern about cleanliness to report it on the city's "Get It Done" app.The city also tells 10News residents do not need a permit to clean or power wash a sidewalk on their own, but they must have a plan to prevent runoff from going into the storm drain. Huntington says he went with an eco-friendly company that followed those guidelines.The former lifeguard says to keep the beach area looking nice, he replaced the wooden barrier posts along the road that surrounds Crown Point."The reason people come to San Diego is to enjoy Mission Beach and Pacific Beach."With the help of two local hardware stores, Huntington says he was able to acquire power tools to continue to help spruce up the neighborhood.As for the overgrown brush, the city says its weed abatement program is back online since being paused due to COVID-19. 1988
