The White House defended President Donald Trump's Sunday tweet that included a video of his supporters yelling the phrase "white power" at protesters at a Florida retirement community. On Sunday morning, President Donald Trump retweeted a video that was reportedly taken at The Villages, a large retirement community in central Florida. At one point in the video, a man in a golf cart adorned with Trump flags yells "white power" at anti-Trump demonstrators. The protesters can also be heard in the video shouting profanities at Trump supporters and also calling Trump a "Nazi" and "racist."Trump included a message in his retweet of the video, writing, "Thank you to the great people of The Villages." The tweet was live for more than three hours before it was deleted from his feed.Though the tweet was deleted, it sparked condemnations from some members of his own party. Sen. Tim Scott, R-South Carolina, called Trump's endorsement of the video "indefensible."In a statement on Sunday evening, White House spokesperson, Judd Deere defended the president's actions, saying that he "didn't hear" the racist language used in the video."President Trump is a big fan of The Villages. He did not hear the one statement made on the video. What he did see was tremendous enthusiasm from his many supporters," Deere said, according to CNN and The Associated Press. 1365

The US believes that Ibrahim al-Asiri, a master al Qaeda bombmaker, is dead. The Saudi Arabian native was the mastermind behind the "underwear bomb" attempt to detonate a flight above the skies of Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009.A senior US official expressed "confidence that he was killed."Two US officials told CNN al-Asiri was killed by a CIA drone last year. The CIA is not commenting on his fate.CNN reported last week that al-Asiri may have been killed in Yemen last year, according to a UN team that tracks terrorist groups.Counterterrorism analysts say there should be significant skepticism over al-Asiri's possible demise for one major reason: His group, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, has not released any statement acknowledging his death, nor a eulogy celebrating his martyrdom.Al-Asiri is widely credited with perfecting miniaturized bombs with little or no metal content that could make it past some airport security screening. That ability made him a direct threat to the US, and some of his plots had come close to reaching their targets in the US.In addition to the "underwear bomb" attempt, al-Asiri was behind the so-called "printer bomb" plot. That plan saw him send explosive devices inside printers to the US. The two packages were being shipped from Yemen through Dubai and the UK in October 2010.Both were addressed to synagogues in Chicago.Al-Asiri appeared to have taken on a more public-facing role within al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula in recent years, including purportedly recording a speech the group released in 2016.The most recent public statement attributed to him was a written speech released by the group on September 12, 2017, to coincide with the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The speech promised an ongoing war against the United States.CNN cannot independently verify he authored these statements.Few expect al-Asiri's expertise to die with him. Officials believe he trained a number of apprentices. And since 2014, US officials have been concerned that bomb-making expertise built up by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has migrated to other groups, including al Qaeda operatives in Syria.Meanwhile, ISIS is among the terrorist groups that have worked to develop laptop bombs, prompting large electronics to be temporarily banned in the cabin on certain flights to the United States and the UK from the Middle East last year. 2414

The White House said late Friday it is prepared to veto a bill proposed by House Democrats to infuse the cash-strapped Postal Service with funds. The White House’s announcement comes a week after President Donald Trump said he supported funding the Postal Service with Congressional funds. Last week marked a period of the Postal Service removing machines and collection boxes, as mail service has slowed for many across the country. The bill introduced by House Democrats would, in addition to providing funds, require the post office to maintain its current level of service, not close any locations and would lift a prohibition of overtime. Those measures would be in effect through at least the end of the year.According to the Congressional Budget Office, the bill would provide an estimated billion in funding for the post office. The White House pushed back in a policy memo, claiming that reports of slowdowns are an “overreaction.”“This bill misses an opportunity to improve USPS,” the White House said.“USPS does not need a billion bailout. It needs reforms that will return it to a trend of long- term financial self-sufficiency,” the White House added. The Trump administration said that USPS has enough funds to operate through August 2021. But during his Senate testimony on Friday, Postmaster Louis DeJoy said that the post office is losing billion on an annual basis.“Without change our losses will only increase in the years to come,” DeJoy said. The USPS has historically been self-sufficient. But declining volume and increased pension costs have cut into the service’s bottom line. But the post office remains a lifeline for many who rely on mail for medicines, important documents, and other supplies. 1736

The Seattle Seahawks postponed a workout with free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick after Kaepernick declined to stop kneeling during the national anthem, ESPN reports.According to ESPN, the Seahawks contacted the former 49ers quarterback two weeks ago to arrange a workout. However, the meeting was canceled at the last minute over the constroversial protest.Kaepernick began kneeling for the national anthem during the 2016 preseason, saying he was hoping to bring attention to police brutality. He continued his protest through the 2016 season, and his contract with the 49ers was not extended following the season.Kaepernick has not played since the 2016, though he is still a free agent and can be signed by any team. In October, Kaepernick filed a grievance against the NFL alleging the owners colluded to blackball him from the league. He was deposed by the league in connection with his complaint earlier this week.Kaepernick's former teammate and fellow free agent Eric Reid was also reportedly asked by Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown about kneeling during the anthem during a workout with the team. Reid said he would continue kneeling, and the Bengals did not offer Reid a contract.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. Scripps National Desk. Follow him on Twitter @alexhider. 1355
