SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - City leaders say the canyon near the 163 that caught fire Tuesday afternoon was overdue for tree trimming and a homeless flushing.The fire only burned 10 trees but it has many neighbors frustrated that the fire even started in the first place.“That was a pretty big one,” said Councilman Chris Ward on the fire, “we’re pretty scared here in the mid city neighborhoods with the urban canyons which catch fire from time to time.”Ward says he has been trying for over a year to get CalTrans and the City of San Diego to clear out the canyons.Officials have not announced the cause of the fire but it is believe to have been from a cooking fire started by homeless illegally camping.RELATED: Brush fire breaks out near 163“About a generation ago we lost 75 homes in Normal Heights to a canyon fire so this is a real, real danger.” said Ward, “We gotta take this seriously.” 896

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Court services are being drastically reduced due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which affects both civil and criminal proceedings. The closure will last until April 3rd.“My fear is that we’re going to have situations where individuals are going to stay in custody longer than what the law permits,” said David P. Shapiro, a criminal defense attorney. “What happens to the individuals who are in custody who have a future court date?”By law, you should have your first court appearance within 48 hours after your arrest. That excludes weekends and holidays, according to a spokesperson with the District Attorney’s Office.“We are in constant meetings with the court and the Public Defender and the Sheriff, our law enforcement partners,” said District Attorney Summer Stephan.Stephan said they have dealt with closures, such as during our past major wildfires. They are working on a system to review criminal cases to see who is suitable for community release.“This is an evolving process, but what we’re trying to do is to maintain due process in the time of crisis,” Stephan said.A Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told 10News they are “working with the District Attorney’s Office and evaluating the impact” the court closures might have.“I was personally hoping they would have an emergency department available through all this just for arraignments, just for in-custody arraignments. Then we can at least address individuals who have been arrested,” Shapiro said.The court will still be available for restraining orders, emergency conservatorship, and search warrants. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers about a series of overnight closures along Interstate 5 over the next two weeks.From Sunday, November 4 through Thursday, November 8, northbound I-5 will be closed between La Jolla Village Drive and Genesee Avenue between 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.Northbound I-5 will also be closed from Tuesday, November 13 through Thursday, November 15 in the same area from 10:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.CHECK TRAFFIC The agency is encouraging motorists to take an alternate route to avoid possible congestion.The section of the interstate will be closed so crews can remove the temporary wooden structures from the new Gilman Drive Bridge over I-5. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Days after Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law aimed at child sex abuse, three San Diego women came forward to announce a lawsuit against the Diocese of San Diego. The three women say they were abused by Monsignor Gregory Sheridan as children. Sheridan worked in this diocese for 35 years and is on the diocese’s list of credibly accused abusive priests. This new measure gives survivors of childhood sexual assault, regardless of their age, a three-year “window” to bring a civil lawsuit against any perpetrator and employer or third party that was aware of misconduct that created a risk of childhood sexual assault. The new law also extends the statute of limitations for survivors of childhood sexual assault, giving survivors more time to file civil lawsuits: up to their 40th birthday (previously their 26th birthday) or within five years (previously three years) from the date of discovery of an adult psychological injury caused by the childhood sexual assault. One of the victims told 10News, "It doesn’t mean you don’t love God, doesn’t mean you don’t support your church, it means this priest was a bad apple."10News reached out to the Diocese of San Diego and they sent a statement that reads in part, "There is no crime or sin worse than a priest abusing the young people he is sworn to serve and protect. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- At least nine parked vehicles has their windows smashed with a bat in Oak Park early Monday morning. The vandalism happened on the 5600 block of Redwood Street around 1 a.m. Car windows along Redwood Street and Thorn Street were smashed. A witness told 10News he was returning home when he noticed shattered pieces of glass on the ground and spotted two suspects trying to get away in a white car with no license plates. The man says he followed the suspects down Thorn Street before they got away. Police are searching for the suspects and say nothing appears to have been stolen from the vehicles. 628
