VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - The generosity and hard work of a Vista kindergarten student is helping hundreds of other children. Katelynn Hardee of Breeze Hill Elementary overheard a student’s mother saying she had a hard time paying for an after-school program. Katelynn asked her mom if they could open a hot cocoa and cookie stand to raise money for other families. RELATED: San Diego grandmother grateful for man's random act of kindness“I said ‘let’s do it’, and all proceeds would go to charity; I didn’t know at that point if we could donate to the lunch program,” Katelynn’s mother Karina told the Vista Unified School District. With sales as hot as the cocoa, the stand raised enough money to pay off hundreds of lunch balances for students. “Because of her generosity, 123 students in the Vista Unified School District had their account balances paid off,” says Jamie Phillips, Director of Child Nutrition Services for Vista Unified School District.” “It is truly inspiring to see Katelynn's compassion and generous nature utilized to help those less fortunate. Students like Katelynn embody the mission and values of Vista Unified School District." WASHINGTON - Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott have teamed up to make a push to keep Daylight Saving Time across the country during the pandemic. It’s the latest push by Florida lawmakers to make Daylight Saving Time permanent. On Wednesday, Scott and Rubio released a joint statement saying they will introduce legislation to keep the United States on Daylight Saving Time through November 7, 2021.Daylight Saving Time is scheduled to end for the year on Sunday, November 1.The senators say their bill will help provide stability for families dealing with enough change with virtual learning, working from home and other disruptions the COVID-19 pandemic has caused.“After months of staying inside amid the coronavirus pandemic, families across the nation could use a little more sunshine and time to enjoy all that Florida has to offer… I’m glad to join Senator Rubio to lead this effort in Congress,” Scott said in a statement. In 2018, Florida lawmakers approved a bill to keep Florida on Daylight Saving Time permanently. But it can't be enacted without congressional approval.“Our government has asked a lot of the American people over the past seven months, and keeping the nation on Daylight Saving Time is just one small step we can take to help ease the burden,” Rubio said.Legislation to make daylights savings time permanent has also been introduced in Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah and Vermont. Similar legislation has been struck down in Idaho, Mississippi, New Mexico, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.Hawaii does not observe Daylight Saving Time and neither does Arizona, minus the Navajo Nation in the northeastern part of the state, according to NASA. Indiana began observing daylight saving time in 2006.What is daylight saving time?It was invented to make the best use of daylight hours. Benjamin Franklin created the concept of Daylight Saving Time, according to NASA, and it has been used throughout much of the U.S., Canada and Europe since World War I.Can any state opt-out of it?Yes, all a state has to do is pass a state law.The official start/stop dates have been amended multiple timesIn 1966, former President Lyndon Johnson signed a law stating that Daylight Saving Time begins on the last Sunday of April and ends on the last Sunday in October of each year, according to NASA.The law was amended in 1986, and Daylight Saving Time officially began on the first Sunday in April, but the end date remained the same.Former President George W. Bush signed an energy policy bill in 2005 that would extend Daylight Saving Time by four weeks, beginning on the second Sunday of March, according to NASA, and it went into effect in 2007.It's referred to as "summer time" in EuropeMost of Europe observes summer time, which begins on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October. It may affect your healthAccording to Health.com, in vitro fertilization (IVF) success rates drop in March, immediately following the time change. In addition, heart attacks spike after the spring time change, and the number of strokes rises when Daylight Saving Time starts and ends.Exhaustion and fatigue are a common effect as well, especially in teenagers, Health.com reported.Tips to alleviate the switchThose worried about easing into a new schedule can take small steps like eating dinner early, using a lightbox in the morning, taking an afternoon nap and avoiding screens before bedtime. For tips on how to survive the start of Daylight Saving Time, read here. This story originally reported by Matthew Borek on abcactionnews.com. 3670

Want to get away but school has started? You're not alone if you're dreaming of a place to take a break while your kids do their distance learning. There's a new trend out there called "schoolcations" for those who are ready to take a trip. There's a little bit of something for everyone. For those craving a beach getaway, there is the Four Seasons Punta Mita.“it's a beautiful destination in the Mexican Pacific,” said Miguel Peregrina, the on-site communications and marketing director at Four Seasons Punta Mita.“We were thinking what should we do because on top of all that it was long stays,” Peregrina added. “People are arriving for three weeks or longer stays.”This particular resort was the first of the of the Four Seasons to open in Latin America. After their post pandemic re-opening in early July, Peregrina said they started getting some interesting inquiries.“We are receiving a lot of requests for a study buddy, which is like a nanny with technical expertise familiar with operation in the resort that can stay with the kids while they’re doing online classes,” Peregrina said. “And we have professional tutors.”There's golf, tennis, and folklorico lessons if you're so inclined. You get to work in a cabana, while your kids do their work too.If you have mountains on your mind, you can head to the Poconos, where students are working on computers while wearing masks“They’re doing their homework or they’re online with their class at the moment, trying to stay engaged with their schoolwork,” Robert Howell, general manager of the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resorts, said. The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resorts has a "Monitored Learning Environment" for children.“Mom and dad are out and about; they could be on the porch having coffee, they could be on the golf course or sitting by the river, or swimming in the river,” Howell said. The historic Inn opened in 1911 and also boasts historic golfing."We have golf on an island in the middle of the Delaware River,” Howell said. “When you cross the bridge, you’re immersed in golf. Sam Sneed, Arnold Palmer, Walter Hagen, it has a storied history.”There are also hikes on the Appalachian Trail, river trips, or just fresh air on a patio. If your kids are craving a water park, there's the Howl N'Learn option at Great Wolf Lodge. For now, five of its 19 locations are offering a "schoolcation."“The parents who when they’re at home with their kids really don’t get a break to focus on their work,” Great Wolf Lodge communication director Jason Lasecki said. “We gave them the opportunity to put them in this independent learning center and then the parents can go off and take those conference calls and do those work things that they’re not able to do when they’re doing the remote learning with their kids.”Lasecki says they realized last spring that parents were having a hard time making it all happen.“When you’re done with your school, you’ve got the water park there,” Lasecki said. “You can go have fun in the water park that afternoon even if it's the day of your check out. You can stay and play in the water park until it closes that night so you’ve got all those fun activities at Great Wolf that you can take advantage of.” 3196

WASHINGTON — The Department of Justice is using aggressive tactics against those it has charged in the civil unrest over racism. Those people have been portrayed by President Donald Trump as violent left-wing radicals. The Republican president has used the protests to try to scare white, suburban voters into reelecting him. But an Associated Press review of thousands of pages of court documents from the more than 300 federal arrests made nationwide shows many are people caught up in the moment. Very few of those charged appear to be affiliated with any highly organized extremist groups. The Associated Press reports that there is only one apparent mention of antifa in a federal arrest. In a Boston case, an FBI Gang Task Force member was investigating “suspected ANTIFA activity associated with the protests” when a suspect shot at police. The arrest record said the FBI is not investigating the shooter as an antifa member.Members of both far-left and far-right groups have been arrested charged for acts of violence amid a summer of protest, as have those who seized upon the chaos as a chance to loot businesses. But the vast majority of those arrested during summer protests are young suburban adults with little criminal history, from the very neighborhoods Trump vows to protect.Despite that sparse criminal history, the AP reports that the federal government is pushing to keep those protesters behind bars, even as the COVID-19 pandemic is spreading quickly among those who have been incarcerated. According to a tracker compiled by the AP and The Marshall Project, more than 16,000 COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the federal prison system. The Associated Press adds that 40% of those facing federal charges are Black, and two-thirds are under the age of 30.The vast majority of protests against police brutality and systemic racism that took place this summer following the death of George Floyd were peaceful. One study showed that 93% of Black Lives Matter protests between late May and late August were peaceful. 2043
