YANGON, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- The 5th Escort Task group of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA)- Navy, made up of two warships -- "Guanhzhou" and "Caohu" made a friendly call at Myanmar Yangon's Thilawa Port Sunday afternoon.It was also the first time for Chinese naval warship to have called at Myanmar port.The five-day mission is aimed at promoting friendly relationships between the two armed forces of the two countries and exchange between the two navies.A grand ceremony was launched to welcome the Chinese warships amid rain, attended by Major Han Sein, Commander of Myanmar Navy Dockyard Base, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ye Dabo and other embassy officials as well as representatives of Chinese companies, teachers and students based in Myanmar and local Chinese residents totaling about 200.Chinese naval soldiers and officers of destroyer Guangzhou stand in formation on board upon their arrival at Myanmar Yangon's Thilawa Port, Aug. 29, 2010. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) - China's State Council, or the Cabinet, unveiled a set of guidelines Wednesday, aiming at helping reconstruction work in landslide-hit Zhouqu County in Gansu Province.The guidelines affect taxation, finance, education and employment policies in the region which was devastated by the massive mudslide on Aug. 8.The document clarified that funds for the reconstruction would come primarily from central government subsidies.It said that priority would be given to rebuild damaged residential houses, public services, infrastructure and prevent the spreading of diseases.It specified tax reduction measures for enterprises and individuals who had organized and collected donations, and encouraged banks and financial institutions to increase loans to the mudslide-hit areas.Land required for housing, infrastructure and reconstructing public facilities will be allocated by the local government, according to the document.Local governments or universities have also been directed to financially assist Zhouqu-born college students, while high-school students in the landslide-affected areas have been exempted from paying tuition fees, the document said.A massive mudslide triggered by rainstorms slammed Zhouqu county in northwest China's Gansu Province on Aug. 8, leaving 1,472 dead, 294 missing and more than 15,000 people homeless.

BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese and U.S. officials vowed here Wednesday to boost cooperation in law enforcement and make joint efforts to improve bilateral ties.The pledge came when Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with visiting U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.Holder is the highest-ranking U.S. judical official to visit China since U.S. President Barack Obama took office in 2009.A sound relationship between China and the United States is not only in the interests of the two nations' peoples but also conducive to peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, said Zhou, who is also secretary of the Political and Legal Affairs Committee with the CPC Central Committee."We hope the United States will honor its commitments and think of and handle bilateral relations from a long-term and strategic perspective. We also hope the U.S. will respect China's sovereignty and dignity and not do anything that hurts the overall China-U.S. relationship," said the Chinese official.Zhou said China is serious about cooperation with the U.S. and hopes to make joint efforts to hunt down fugitive suspects, and fight terrorism, drug abuse and intellectual property rights violations.Holder said the United States attaches importance to U.S.-China relations and hopes to find common ground with China while putting aside differences.The U.S. Department of Justice hopes to be a good partner of its Chinese counterpart, he added.

  

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Tuesday called for China and the United States to work closely to make contributions to a steady recovery of global economy.The essential task of the two countries at present is to overcome difficulties and impacts brought about by the economic downturn, Wen said during a meeting with Lawrence Summers, head of U.S. President Barack Obama's National Economic Council, and Deputy National Security Adviser Tom Donilon."China and the U.S. should work together to properly deal with problems and consolidate the foundation for a better relationship in future," he said.Wen said a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship was in the fundamental interests of the two countries, and should be promoted unswervingly."Dialogue and cooperation are at the heart of Sino-U.S. relations, and the influence (of them) is unprecedented," he said.Wen proposed the two countries deepen political trust, respect the other's core interests, not interfere in the other's internal affairs and not take the other as an adversary.The U.S. officials told Wen that the Obama administration valued relations with China because the two countries share common interests and the ties will greatly influence the world's future.The United States wanted to promote high-level contacts and frank talks, deepen strategic trust and cooperation, and properly handle any problems so to improve bilateral ties, according to them.They also reaffirmed that the United States will adhere to one-China policy.

  

FUZHOU, Oct. 23 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of thousands of residents have been evacuated as Megi, the 13th typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall in Zhangzhou City in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, authorities said.As of 2 p.m., 272,300 people have been evacuated, according to officials at the provincial department of civil affairs.Also, there was no immediate report of casualties in Fujian. But disasters caused by typhoon Megi have claimed 11 lives in Taiwan, across the Taiwan Strait.The typhoon has weakened into a strong tropical storm after landing at Liu'ao Town of Zhangpu County, southern Fujian, packing winds of up to 140 km/h.The storm is expected to move northward at 10 km per hour and further weaken to become a tropical depression, according to the National Meteorological Center.The cloud cluster brought by the storm, however, will be hovering over the southern coast of Fujian for some time and is expected to dump more rain in the areas, according to the Fujian provincial meteorological bureau.Zhangpu received 243 mm of rainfall, and neighboring Yunxiao County recorded 332 mm between 8 a.m. Friday and 5:30 p.m. Saturday.The precipitation in cities of Zhangzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou will reach 100 mm in the next 12 hours, the provincial meteorological bureau said.The storm will also be responsible for heavy rains in Fujian's neighboring provinces of Guangdong and Zhejiang.Influenced by the typhoon, 79 flights at the airport of Xiamen City, also in Fujian, had been canceled as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and the Dadeng Bridge, which connects Xiamen City and Dadeng Island, has been closed since 7 a.m.The Ministry of Civil Affairs said late Saturday that it has launched an emergency response by sending working groups to coordinate disaster relief efforts.Also, Sun Chunlan, Communist Party chief in Fujian, has ordered local officials to be on high alert against possible heavy rains and geological disasters.
