SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Humane Society and District Attorney’s office are teaming up to encourage people to report suspected animal cruelty. According to the Humane Society, animal cruelty is one of the earliest and most dramatic indicators that someone may be developing a pattern of seeking power and control by abusing others. The Humane Society says when animals in the home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the home may be in danger. “Often times when animals are being abused, people are being abused too,” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, President and CEO of San Diego Humane Society. “That’s why it’s so important to report animal cruelty and neglect when you see it.”Anyone who wants to report animal cruelty is asked to call the Humane Society at 619-299-7012. All reports of suspected abuse or neglect can remain anonymous. 873

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - This week, a massive Mola mola fish stunned whale watchers in San Diego. The fish is a unique sight, appearing to look like a giant fish head with fins. It's also known as the sunfish. Domenic Biagini, owner and captain of Gone Whale Watching San Diego, says they specialize in giving people once in a lifetime encounters. "Whenever I give my opening spiel, I tell them I'll show them anything that moves," said Biagini.RELATED: Thar she blows! Where to whale watch in San Diego — by land or seaOn this trip, the massive Mola mola stole the show.Biagini says while mola is common here, they're usually 2 to 3 feet long in our waters. He believes the one they spotted was 7 to 8 feet. "When we came across this specific one, we were kind of blown away by the sheer magnitude of it," said Biagini.Biagini happened to have divers on his boat that day, who told him mola is one of the prized fish to swim with. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The U.S. Attorney's Office of Southern California announced charges Friday against a man in the death of a Camp Pendleton Marine who had an overdose in his barracks. The unidentified Corporal was found unresponsive on the floor near his computer chair on January 29, 2017. He was wearing headphones and appeared to have been playing video games, investigators said.An autopsy determined the Marine died of fentanyl toxicity. A pill found on the headboard near a powdery substance and a rolled-up dollar bill tested positive for fentanyl.A complaint unsealed Friday detailed drug charges against 25-year-old Kyle Shephard of San Marcos.Investigators said Shephard met the victim in November 2016 and sold him fentanyl and other drugs multiple times over three months.Shepard acknowledged the pills could lead to an overdose, according to the complaint. In December, Shephard was arrested and charged with possessing for distribution roughly 2,000 fentanyl pills.“What a senseless tragedy that another young life has been lost because of fentanyl,” said U.S. Attorney Adam Braverman. “This Marine was serving his country and had his whole life ahead of him. We are going to hold dealers accountable for the deaths that result from their reckless disregard for human life.”Shephard will be in court March 6 for a detention hearing.  1369
