BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator said Wednesday that China will promote social exchanges with Myanmar to boost bilateral ties.     "We attach importance to and support friendly exchanges and cooperation between social groups and organizations in China and Myanmar, which will contribute to the development of bilateral ties," said Zhou Tienong, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, in a meeting with a delegation from a government-supported organization from Myanmar.     Zhou, also president of the Chinese Association for International Understanding, briefed the eight-member delegation on China's political and economic situation, its measures in tackling the global downturn and pledged to boost economic and trade cooperation with the international community, including Myanmar. URUMQI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- A key expressway in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region began construction on Wednesday in a move to improve the region's road network and serve its economic development.     The 135-km expressway will link Kuytun City to Karamay City. The project, funded by the central government and Xinjiang regional government, will cost 3.87 billion yuan (about 567 million U.S. dollars).     The road is bidirectional with four lanes. It will be completed and put into use in November 2011.     Dai Gongxing, vice chairman of the Xinjiang regional government, said at the groundbreaking ceremony in Kuytun that the expressway, also part of the national expressway network, would improve the regional transport and promote local economic development.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chairman Ning Gaoning of China National Cereals, Oils & Foodstuffs Corporation (COFCO), said Sunday the corporation's total investment in the northwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would reach 10 billion yuan (1.46 billion U.S. dollars) over the next five years.     Ning made the remarks during his visit to the Xinjiang-based subsidiary companies of the corporation, the country's largest oil and food producer.     Currently, COFCO's accumulative investment in the region is about 5 billion yuan, focused on tomato processing, sugar manufacturing, and beverages.     Ning said the corporation would double investment over the next five years due to confidence in the region's growth potential, but did not say for which the future investment would be targeted.     In 2005, COFCO made an investment in Xinjiang's Tunhe Investment Co., Ltd. by taking over a 37.2 percent share of Tunhe. So far COFCO Tunhe has become the largest tomato ketchup producer in Asia, and the second largest in the world.

BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong has asked schools to educate students comprehensively about national unity during recent a tour to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.     Liu said teachers should play a guiding role in helping students become "forceful practitioners, loyal promulgators, and strong guards" of national unity.     Great efforts should be made to develop education, science and technology, and culture in Xinjiang, Liu said. She called for contributions toward building a prosperous, affluent and harmonious socialist Xinjiang.     During the tour Liu visited educational institutes, cultural organizations and a company engaged in renewable energy.

BEIJING, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Wednesday called for more policy assistance and financial support to encourage the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).     Attendees at a State Council executive meeting, chaired by Premier Wen Jiabao, agreed that promoting the sound development of the SMEs was of great importance to maintain economic growth and social stability.     The government would exert more efforts to improve the policy and law system to create a more open and fair competition environment for SMEs.     Measures would be taken to help SMEs tackle financing difficulties, and the establishment of the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), the country's first Nasdaq-style market, would speedup helping small companies raise fund.     The central government would also increase funding to support the SMEs, especially in sectors such as technological innovation, industrial structure adjustment and employment.     The government would pick some SMEs to participate in the country's subsidized purchasing program of home appliances, agricultural machinery and automobiles in rural areas as well as the auto, home appliance replacement program.     Attendees at the meeting demanded better services for SMEs and support to promote technological progress and structure adjustment in SMEs.     They also reviewed and approved draft regulations on national body-building and on the administration of joint-venture establishment of foreign companies or individuals in China. Both regulations would be released to public after further revision.
