SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A report from SANDAG Thursday showed that unemployment in San Diego County fell for the sixth straight week.San Diego County now has a 14.8% unemployment rate for the week ending June 20 -- that's down 1.5% from the previous week, and significantly lower than the peak of 25% on May 9."We're not out of the woods at all," warned SANDAG Chief Economist Ray Major. "This is still 50% higher than the highest unemployment we had during the great recession."Major said a 14.8% unemployment rate means 200,000 San Diegans are still out of work. According to the report, ZIP codes in Logan Heights, City Heights, Encanto, the College area, and San Ysidro are the hardest hit.Major told ABC 10News the looming threat of renewed restrictions on businesses may lead to another rise in unemployment."Many of these businesses have been waiting to open up again," said Major. "They haven't made any revenue for the last couple of months, they were open for about 19 days and now you're telling them they have to shut down again. Some of them are not going to be able to make it."Phil Blair, Chief Executive of Manpower Staffing, which helps companies find temporary employees, said he doesn't think unemployment will fall below 10% until the tourism industry recovers."We've got to open up airports, we've got to open up our convention center," Blair said. "And all of us have to be comfortable flying and then going into a big room with 8, 10, 12,000 people … Then we'll see (unemployment) at 13, 12 percent. And then once the virus dies down, I think within three months we'll be back within 5 or 6 percent. That's my prediction."The five ZIP codes with lowest unemployment rates are Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Chula Vista NE and Rancho Bernardo W. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was stabbed to death in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter early Wednesday morning, and police say one person was detained in connection with the incident.At around 2:30 a.m., San Diego police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 400 block of Fifth Avenue, near J Street.When officers arrived, they saw a man in his 40s with a stab wound on his chest lying on the ground with a woman trying to keep pressure on the injury.The victim was rushed to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.After the victim gave police a description of the attacker, officers spotted and then apprehended a man believed to be linked to the stabbing.ABC 10News learned the man was detained for questioning.SDPD Lt. Andra Brown said the incident is under investigation, but it appeared the stabbing took place following an exchange of words between the victim and his friends and another group of people. 940

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A local organization is raising money for a good Samaritan that died in February in Pine Valley. Sunday, the It's All About the Kids Foundation hosted the "Be Like Bob" art show to raise money for a scholarship in Bob Bruno's honor. Bruno died in February when he stopped to help a driver on the I-8 in Pine Valley. While helping, there was another accident and to avoid being hit, Bruno jumped over the side of the guardrail, falling into the canyon below. "I think he would be really honored to know that we were memorializing him this way," said Gwendolyn Sneed, Bruno's long-time partner. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego County woman has filed a lawsuit against a local physician who she says used his own sperm to artificially inseminate her.The discovery occurred decades later after Beverly Willhelm and her husband sought out a fertility specialist in the late 80s.Instead of receiving anonymous sperm, she says the doctor used his own. Willhelm says her son, 23-year-old James Mallus, learned after taking a 23andMe DNA test that his biological dad was the same man that his mother consulted to become pregnant.Willhelm says she's now suing the doctor for fertility fraud in a civil lawsuit.Though Willhelm's attorney said the lawsuit was filed Wednesday, ABC 10News is not naming the doctor because we have not been able to confirm that with the San Diego County Courthouse.According to the lawsuit, the doctor still practices in San Diego County. The lawsuit claims that "the Defendant, without Plaintiff's knowledge or consent, used his own sperm to impregnate her."The suit goes on to say that "based on allegations regarding his mistreatment of numerous patients in 1992-93, Defendant surrendered his California medical license in 1999."The doctor's license was reinstated in 2004. Those allegations are not related to the current lawsuit or other instances of fertility fraud.ABC 10News has reached out to the doctor in the lawsuit, but have not heard back. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available.The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see.
