LOS ANGELES, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Using a simple, minimally- invasive technique to analyze cells from the interior of the nose, U.S. researchers have detected lung cancer in its earliest stage. For the study, the researchers at the Boston University Medical Center collected nasal epithelial cells from thirty three smokers who were undergoing medically-indicated bronchoscopies for suspicion of lung cancer, according to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on Sunday.Of these patients, 11 were found to have benign disease and 22 had lung cancer. Brushings were taken from the right or left nostril and profiled on microarrays, a process that allows researchers to study gene expression changes. The researchers identified 170 genes that were differentially expressed between patients with and without lung cancer. They also found that genes linked to colon cancer and adenocarcinoma, as well as genes that trigger cell division and blood vessel growth, were expressed more heavily in patients with cancer. Genes involved in tumor suppression were also expressed at lower levels in these patients.Earlier studies have used gene expression differences in the bronchial airways to identify lung cancer in its early stages. The researchers relied on those results to design the current study."In this study we used the same principle as we used in our earlier studies of bronchial tissue, only this time, those methods were used to study nasal cells," said study author Christina Anderlind, MD, Instructor of Medicine. "Our hypothesis was that the upper airway epithelium of smokers with lung cancer displays a cancer-specific gene expression pattern, and that this airway nasal gene expression signature reflects the changes that occur in lung tissue."

BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese official has vowed to take every possible measure to ensure food safety in the country, saying the government has decided to launch national overhauls this year on sectors including milk products, cooking oil, health foods, meat and alcohol.Zhang Yong, director of the executive office of the food safety commission under the State Council, or Cabinet, said in an interview with Xinhua that the food and drinks in these five sectors are consumed in enormous quantities each day and they will do great harm and have an extensive social impact if a problem arises.Through special campaigns to overhaul these five sectors and by solving the most prominent problems, the government aims to accumulate experiences and create administrative systems in a bid to prevent food safety incidents and raise the overall level of food safety, Zhang said. The central government initiated a prolonged and stringent fight against the illegal use of additives in food last month, detailing measures to intensify supervision, upgrade safety limits, and increase penalties for violators.Vice Premier Li Keqiang warned of the great harm from illegal additives in food at a high-profile national meeting last month, promising a "firm attitude, iron-hand measures and more efforts" in dealing with the problem.Zhang Yong admitted "China is in a period when food safety incidents are likely to arise" since the country's food industry is on a fast track for development and a large number of food producers and catering operators are running their businesses in a small-scale or scattered way."It makes it more difficult for the government departments to conduct supervision on food quality and safety," Zhang said."We will take every possible measure to consolidate the feeble foundation to ensure food safety and curb food safety incidents as soon as possible," he said.According to Zhang, the government will also make efforts to improve supervision and emergency handling capabilities, raise the credibility and personnel quality of the involved enterprises, and severely punish violators. The Chinese government made the moves after a series of food safety scandals emerged despite the authorities' efforts to revamp the country's food industry. They included steamed buns dyed with unidentified chemicals, the use of "lean meat powder", also known as clenbuterol, a kind of fat-burning drug, as well as the use of illegal cooking oil known as "gutter oil."

LOS ANGELES, March 23 (Xinhua) -- People who are more physically active are less likely to have high blood pressure associated with a high-sodium diet, a new study suggests. The study was conducted by researchers at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, HealthDay News reported on Wednesday.Study findings were presented at the on-going American Heart Association's meeting on nutrition, physical activity and cardiovascular disease, held in Atlanta, said the report. To explore a potential association between exercise and the hypertensive role of dietary salt, the researchers focused on roughly 1,900 men and women (average age 38) living in a rural region in northern China. None took blood pressure medication during the study, according to the report. For one week all of the participants consumed 3,000 mg of sodium a day in their diet; for another week, they were placed on a high-sodium diet -- 18,000 mg per day.Nine blood pressure readings were taken each week, and questionnaires were completed to assess routine levels of physical activity, ranging from "very active" to "quite sedentary."When switching from the lower-sodium to a high-sodium diet, those who experienced a 5 percent or greater boost in their systolic blood pressure (the heart contraction measure represented by the top figure of a blood pressure reading) were deemed "high salt-sensitive."Those reporting the most physical activity had a 38 percent lower risk of being highly salt-sensitive than the least active group. This group was the least likely to see a 5 percent or greater rise in their blood pressure in response to a high-salt diet.Compared with the most sedentary group, those in the next-to- highest activity group had a 17 percent lower risk of salt- sensitivity, and those in the next-to-lowest activity group had a 10 percent lower risk. The team concluded that engaging in physical activity has a " significant," independent and progressively healthful impact on the degree to which salt sensitivity relates to blood pressure."For those with low physical activity, their blood pressure will increase more if they increase their sodium intake," study co- author Dr. Jiang He, chair of the department of epidemiology at the school, said in remarks published by HeathDay News."It's a little bit of a surprise," He added. "But this is the first study to look at this particular association between physical activity and salt sensitivity and blood pressure. But after thinking it over it makes sense, because we already know that physical activity will reduce blood pressure."High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a leading cause of stroke. Because of salt's association with high blood pressure, the American Heart Association recommends consuming less than 1, 500 mg of sodium per day.

PANAMA CITY, April 17 (Xinhua) -- In Latin America there are 600,000 people infected with the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and about 50 percent of them receive treatment, regional director of UNAIDS for Latin America Cesar Nunez said on Sunday."We have to work a lot for the other half get treatment," Nunez told Xinhua during the 124th Assembly of the Inter-parliamentarian Assembly hosted in Panama City from April 15 to 20.Nunez urged the governments of the region to redouble efforts to control this pandemic, by improving the prevention campaigns to stop new infections."The availability of the medicines has grown in the last 10 years and the countries have taken this commitment, however, the number of infections each time is bigger than the number of people we can treat," he said.According to Nunez, despite the increase of new infections among women, the men sector continue being one of the most affected social groups by this virus."In Latin America we have an epidemic where the most affected are men, followed by homosexuals, lesbians and sex workers," he said.Nunez said that during the meeting with the parliamentarians, they exchanged experiences to contribute to improve the management of this disease."We have met with parliamentarians who have voted for more budget to buy more medicines, in favor of laws for more education about this topic and participation in the exchange of information to know about the advances and backwards of the fight against Aids," he said. Some 800 parliamentarians from 125 countries attended the 124th Assembly to debate the recent events in the Arab world, the disaster in Japan and sustainable development.
