Driving through Brazil to Rio de Janeiro, you might spot an eerie sight on the side of the road: a derelict gang of Santas, lying abandoned surrounded by palm trees and greenery.Look closely and you'll see these Father Christmas clones aren't alone. There's a sad looking sleigh and dilapidated reindeer nearby. Soon you'll spot the faded candy canes, battered slides and an eerie house.Welcome to Park Albanoel, in Itaguaí, Brazil — an abandoned Christmas theme park. The park was the brainchild of politician Antonio Albano Reis, colloquially known as the "Santa Claus of Quintino" because he dressed as Santa each Christmas. It was going to be a series of fun, themed-lands over an expansive area — more than 30 million square meters — but only the Santa area was completed.Following Reis' sudden death in a road accident in 2004, Park Albanoel closed and fell into disrepair. 884

DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) — A man suspected of gunning down a liquor store owner near Los Angeles leaned out a car window during a chase and blasted away with a handgun before being dragged wounded from the car Friday. There was no word on his condition as he was taken away in an ambulance. He is believed to be the gunman who walked into a Downey liquor store on Tuesday night and shot down Gurpreet Singh, 44, of Cerritos, Sgt. Mark Haxton said.Police have said nothing was taken from the store and there was no immediate word on a motive for the attack. On Friday afternoon, police and Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies began chasing a black Toyota Prius in Downey, southeast of Los Angeles. The high-speed chase stretched along a freeway and surface streets, during which video showed a passenger in a black T-shirt lean halfway out of the front passenger's window and fire two-handed at pursuing patrol cars.Video showed the man using a distinctive long-barreled revolver strikingly similar to one that was used in the store killing. The chase ended at about 3 p.m. in neighboring Vernon when traffic trapped the car and the passenger again fired. A car behind the Prius managed to back away, and police who pulled up in the next lane riddled the Prius with gunfire, shattering windows.A short time later, a bloodied woman driver got out and surrendered. There was no immediate word on her condition. The street near a railroad track was emptied, and sheriff's SWAT teams were called in. Two armored vehicles blocked in the Prius.During a standoff that lasted more than an hour, authorities rolled a robot up to the open driver's door to peer inside the car and later fired two flash-bang grenades into the vehicle. When the man inside didn't get out, a police dog was sent in to pull at him. Only then did SWAT members drag the motionless man from the car.He was strapped to a gurney and taken away by ambulance. There was no word on his condition. 1954

Due to a coin shortage at the Federal Reserve, Kroger will no longer return coin change to customers. Instead, the remainders from cash transactions can either be donated to charity or applied to the customers' loyalty cards to be used on the next purchase. The change in giving change also applies to subsidiaries of Kroger, including Ralphs, Food 4 Less, King Soopers, Smith's and more. Kroger officials said, "at Kroger, we are implementing several creative solutions to minimize the impact to our customers. We know this is an inconvenience for our customers and we appreciate their patience. The Treasury Department expects the shortage to diminish as more regions of the country reopen."Customers have the following options if coins are not available:Round up to support Zero Hunger, Zero Waste FoundationPay with a form of payment other than cashHave their coin change loaded as credit toward their next purchase directly to their loyalty cardCustomers using self-checkout will still be able to receive coins. There are multiple reasons leading to the current coin shortage. The U.S. Mint has slowed production to keep employees safe from the coronavirus. With stay-at-home orders and business shut-downs, fewer people are spending coins at stores, laundromats, vending machines and other places. Walmart and CVS locations have also made changes to encourage customers to use exact change or plastic to pay for their items when possible. The Federal Reserve rationed coins in June and gathered a task force to look into the shortage to come up with possible solutions. Due to the coronavirus, 7-Eleven announced that they will not be participating in Free Slurpee Day this year.In a press release, the convenience store chain said the cancelation was because of “the uncertainties associated with the COVID-19 pandemic."”For nearly two decades, July 11th has been the busiest day of the year for 7?Eleven stores as millions of customers visit us to kick off summer with their favorite frozen drink” said 7?Eleven Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Marissa Jarratt in the release. “But this year, we have to make changes for the greater good. I hope you’ll join us for the in-person party next year.Instead, the company said they will gift one million meals to Feeding America as a birthday surprise. But don't fret - 7-Eleven said customers still have an opportunity to receive a free Slurpee in July.Consumers will need to be a member of the 7Rewards loyalty program to receive the offer, the company said. 960

EL CAJON, Calif. — The end of a partnership between a police K9 and his handler created an emotional moment in California. One of the El Cajon Police Department’s K9s, K9 Jester, is being assigned a new partner after his current partner resigned from the department. After working with Jester for the last two and a half years, Officer Jordan Walker voluntarily resigned to work for another agency, according to the department. Walker said he offered to pay for Jester, who was brought in through a Ben Roethlisberger?Foundation grant. K9s cost anywhere from ,000 to ,000 to bring in and train, according to the foundation.Because Jester is still in excellent health, he was assigned to work with a new partner, Officer Randall Gray. Gray and Jester have already started the bonding process and training together, the department said Thursday. Once the pair completes the academy, Jester will again resume his service.El Cajon police Thursday tweeted out a photo of Gray and Jester together.  1043
