SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Wednesday they received reports of the county's third person to die of flu-related causes since the 2019-20 flu season began.The 80-year-old north county man died Nov. 1, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency. He had received this season's flu vaccine prior to his death and had additional medical conditions. Health officials received reports of this flu season's first death in August. The county also confirmed 58 flu cases last week, nearly double the 30 confirmed cases from the previous week. County health officials have already confirmed 420 flu cases this season, which corresponds with the county's fiscal year from July 1 to June 30. At this time last flu season, officials had confirmed only 157 cases. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A short-circuit on a power line near the intersection of Interstate 805 and state Route 905 knocked out electrical service to about 1,600 nearby homes and businesses Tuesday and sparked a small brush fire. The switch malfunction on a utility pole on Hawken Drive in Otay Mesa occurred shortly before 1 p.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The equipment failure sent melted materials dripping onto the ground, setting grass and other vegetation on fire, SDFRD spokeswoman Monica Munoz said. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to subdue the flames, which blackened about a half-acre of brushy terrain, Munoz said. No structural damage or injuries were reported. Utility crews expected to have power restored to the affected areas, which included pars of Nestor, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro, by early evening, SDG&E spokeswoman Jessica Packard said. 929

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge's ruling today clears the way for the proposed Plaza de Panama project in Balboa Park to proceed.San Diego Superior Court Judge Gregory W. Pollack ruled both the project's proposed bond funding mechanism and an agreement of cooperation with the Plaza de Panama Committee to be legal, allowing the city to proceed with the plan to reduce traffic congestion in the park, according to the city attorney's office.San Diegans for Open Government argued that the city should have allowed voters to decide whether the city should rely on million in bonds to help fund the project.The City Council approved the project by a 7-1 vote in 2012, but six years of challenges and litigation stalled its implementation.The project will limit vehicle access and improve parking in order to restore the Plaza de California and Plaza de Panama as dedicated pedestrian areas."Balboa Park truly is the jewel of San Diego, and I am excited that the city can finally move forward with its plans to revitalize the Park for the enjoyment of San Diegans and tourists alike," City Attorney Mara W.
