IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif., (KGTV) — After six grueling days on the fire line, members of the San Diego-based Strike Team called to fight the Kincade Fire are back home. 10News met with the fire crew from Imperial Beach, who said this was the first time in 11 years that they were called to assist in Northern California. Today, they were back on duty, just hours after their arrival. It's just another day at the Imperial Beach firehouse. Fire Engineer Cory Cooper, firefighter Nick Morales, and Captain Ehren Kahle are cleaning up their ride, Engine 39, after a long trip up north. "It was just kind of a gentle immersion into chaos," Kahle said. Last Friday, the three were part of a large San Diego-based Strike Team called to assist in Sonoma County. As soon as they arrived, they headed straight to the fire line. "It started out with light smoke, which progressively got worse, to a point where my engineer had difficulty seeing the road at some point," Kahle said. Buildings had crumbled, citizens were in chaos. But they were there, fighting the explosive flames, seemingly non-stop."We rest when we can," Kahle laughed. Once the spread slowed down, the team headed back home. The men arrived at 11 p.m. on Thursday. While firefighters in larger departments are given a 24-hour rest period, these guys with the small Imperial Beach department are already back on shift."We're right back to our normal routine."It's day-to-day calls like these, as well as being part of a large Strike Team that reminds Captain Kahle of the true camaraderie of the fire service. "Although I may be going out on a Strike Team with men that I have never worked with or never even met in my entire life, you can probably take a firefighter off of an engine from San Diego, Coronado, National City, or Poway, throw them onto their engine, and they will drive right into that crew and be able to function," Kahle said. In California’s Coachella Valley, people are concerned about catching the novel coronavirus.“They’re scared; they’re freaking out,” said Jorge Garcia, who contracted the virus. “I was scared at first because you hear a lot of stories that people don’t make it, they get really sick.” A lot of people in the desert community, located about two hours east of Los Angeles, are getting sick.Local county health officials report more than 36,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the area and more than 680 deaths.Now, health experts say there aren't enough doctors and nurses to handle the spike in cases.“At one point we had over 90 patients in the hospital with COVID,” said Alan Williamson, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, Ca. “I think we had about three beds available at our peak.”Williamson says his staff is overworked and pushed to its limits. And that bringing in traveling nurses to help lighten the load is no longer an option.“Because of national nature of this pandemic, all of those resources were basically tapped out,” he said.Now, help is on the way from the United States military.“The Department of Defense is committed to this fight,” said U.S. Army Major General Mike Stone, who is helping lead a joint military team to help civilian hospitals fight COVID-19.“We’re tailoring the force,” he said. “We’re giving exactly what’s required where it’s needed on the frontlines to save people’s lives.”To help slow the spread of this virus and provide relief for staff, Stone says the Department of Defense has sent nearly 600 health care workers from different branches of the military to support almost two dozen hospitals in California and Texas.“There is a lot of need and if we can save a life, that’s why we’re there,” he said.The cost of this mission has not been totaled, but Stone says the price is well worth it, as the military shows its commitment to the country.“When the chips are down, America always pulls together,” he said. “We’re here for however long it takes.” 2032

IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for a mother of two accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school. Last week, the department’s financial crimes division issued a public warrant for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Faith Birchman for felony embezzlement.Birchman was the President of the Imperial Beach Charter School’s PTA, until she was voted off the board in March. Months before, board members said they began noticing a lack of funds.“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer Elizabeth McKay said. McKay told 10News, she began connecting the dots last year when vendors from previous years continued to bill the PTA saying they hadn’t gotten paid. That’s when McKay, a former Coronado Police Department Sergeant began investigating. When she contacted the bank, they told her their account no longer existed. "We were very lucky that the bank was willing to work with us to put together a paper trail,” McKay said. “The checks she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial beach or had anything to do with a PTA event."In March, the board confronted Birchman. They had a Sheriff’s Deputy come to the board meeting to explain exactly what “embezzlement” meant."She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay."At the end of the meeting, Birchman was removed from the Board.Now the Sheriff’s department is looking for the woman they said stole directly from kids, forcing the PTA to cancel students field trips and special events. “I want her to think about her own kids. She needs to at this point, make things right by taking responsibility of her actions,” McKay said. “That's the best lesson that she can teach her own children. And to make herself a better person from here."Birchman’s children no longer attend Imperial Beach Charter school. McKay said with the generous support of the community and a large donation from General Mills Box Tops, this school year, the PTA is financially stable again. In a joint status update filed in federal court, Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team claimed that former Trump campaign head Paul Manafort had lied to investigators after promising to cooperate with Mueller as part of a plea agreement. On Sept. 14, Manafort pleaded guilty on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and witness tampering. Manafort has remained in prison awaiting sentencing. Part of the update reads: "The plea agreement provides that if the defendant fails to fulfill completely “each and every one” of his obligations under this agreement, or “engages in any criminal activity prior to sentencing,” the defendant will be in breach of the agreement. A breach relieves the government of any obligations it has under the agreement, including its agreement to a reduction in the Sentencing Guidelines for acceptance of responsibility, but leaves intact all the obligations of the defendant as well as his guilty pleas."Manafort's counsel disputed the FBI's claims. The report states, "After signing the plea agreement, Manafort met with the government on numerous occasions and answered the government’s questions. Manafort has provided information to the government in an effort to live up to his cooperation obligations. He believes he has provided truthful information and does not agree with the government’s characterization or that he has breached the agreement.
