SAN MARCOS (CNS) - A man who reported his car stolen in San Marcos earlier this week caught a lucky break when he spotted his car in the same area today with the suspected thief inside -- but the suspect left before police were able to apprehend him.The man called law enforcement Wednesday morning to report his car had been taken from his apartment complex on Smilax Road near state Route 78, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Perkins.Around 9 a.m. Sunday, the man called the Sheriff's Department and told deputies he had seen his car parked nearby with an unknown man inside it, Perkins said. The man reported seeing the suspect get out of his car and walk away. Deputies searched the area and detained a possible suspect, but it was determined he hadn't been involved in the crime, Perkins said. The suspected car thief remained at large. 863

SAN YSIDRO, Calif. (KGTV) — A man convicted of murder in Honduras was arrested after border agents say he was caught crossing the border with members of a migrant caravan in Tijuana.Miguel Angel Ramirez, 46, was arrested on Nov. 24 around 11 p.m. after he was caught entering the country illegally about a mile east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Two other men traveling with Ramirez were also arrested, one of who had previously been deported, according to CBP.Border agents say Ramirez admitted to being convicted of murder and was released a few months ago. The Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles confirmed he had served 10 years in a Honduras prison for homicide and another 3 years for robbery. He added that he had traveled to the U.S. among the migrant caravan from Honduras, border agents said.RELATED: Mexico's new president could change border policy“It was Border Patrol agents’ effort and valued partnership with the Honduran Consulate in Los Angeles that helped us identify a dangerous convicted felon moving amongst the migrant caravan," San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott said.Ramirez and the two other men, ages 22 and 38, are all Honduran nationals and being held in Department of Homeland Security custody pending deportation proceedings. The arrest was made a day after El Centro border officials say an admitted MS-13 gang member suspected of being in the U.S. illegally was arrested near the Calexico Port of Entry.Border officials said 29-year-old Jose Villalobos-Jobel, of Honduras, told agents he had traveled to the U.S. border within the migrant caravan group as well. He is set to be returned to Honduras. 1703

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — An attorney for a U.S. college student and her boyfriend who have been sentenced to four months in prison in the Cayman Islands for violating strict COVID-19 measures says he plans to appeal the recent ruling.Their attorney Jonathon Hughes says Skylar Mack, 18, of Georgia, and Vanjae Ramgeet, 24, of the Cayman Islands, have been in prison since Tuesday. He says he will argue for a less severe sentence next week and says the two have never been in trouble with the police.Mack is accused of breaking a mandatory two-week quarantine.Hughes told the Associated Press that on Nov. 27, Mack arrived in the Cayman Islands. But instead of undergoing a mandatory two-week quarantine, she broke quarantine by leaving with her boyfriend to attend a water sports event on Nov. 29, the AP reported.According to the AP, a judge ruled that Mack and Ramgeet pay a ,400 fine and provide 40 hours of community service. Ramgeet was also ordered to a two-month curfew, but prosecutors appealed, saying the punishment was lenient. On Dec. 15, a higher court ruled in favor of the prosecutors, and the couple was immediately imprisoned, the AP reported.Mack's grandmother told the AP that she emailed President Donald Trump and received a response saying the White House would look into it. 1309

SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) - An East County family is channeling their pain into helping domestic violence survivors in San Diego. The family's loved one, 19-year-old Kiera Bergman, was murdered last year in Arizona. ”What helps us is being able to help other people and we want her story and her memory to stay alive and that’s why we’re choosing to do donation drives, because we want to be able to help people that are in the same situation she was in," said Mindy Tarantino, Kiera's aunt. Investigators believe Bergman's boyfriend, Jon Clark, is responsible for her death. Clark faces first-degree murder charges and is set to stand trial in a few months. “I'll look at pictures that I have of her and then all of a sudden you just get overwhelmed, I get anxiety really quick, and it just really hits me that she’s gone," said Kiera's grandmother, Sandie Bergman. They are collecting various toiletries and items like diapers to donate to Becky's House, a nonprofit working to break the cycle of domestic violence and homelessness.A donation drive was held in Santee on Monday, but you can also donate online through the family's Amazon Wish List. 1155

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) — A group of Santa Clara County coworkers is more than 0 million richer. The 11 co-workers who pitched  a piece into an office lottery pool successfully matched all the winning numbers of the July 24 Mega Millions drawing. The co-workers, who range in age from 21 to 60, decided to play on a whim after seeing how high the jackpot had reached. They have declined to say where they work, other than it's in the financial industry.RELATED: California lottery releases 'check-a-ticket' mobile feature“It was spur of the moment. ‘Hey, did you hear about the jackpot? We should play.’” Roland Reyes, one of the lucky winners, told California Lottery officials. While the group doesn't regularly have a lottery pool, Reyes seemed to know where to go for tickets.“A small business owner. We’ll probably have a better chance with a mom and pop shop,” Reyes said, leading him to Ernie’s Liquors, at 2808 South White Road in San Jose.Surprisingly, the group plans to continue working. Though their supervisor would have understood if they decided to leave — he was in the lottery pool as well.RELATED: Billions of dollars go unclaimed in the lottery each year. Here's why.“We want to keep our jobs,” Reyes said. “We love that company. We love what we’ve built there. We have a good time and want to stay together.”It wasn't clear whether the winners would take the annualized amount of 3 million spread over 30 years or the lump-sum cash option of 0.5 million. Many mentioned putting the money toward mortgages, kids' tuition, helping family members, and traveling.“It helps real people and families,” Reyes said. 1677
