SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A handful of San Diego County fire departments have sent crews across the state to help with the Woolsey and Camp Fires. But Cal Fire officials tell 10News they're making sure that enough resources are left behind to cover any emergencies that happen here."We have an obligation here to make sure we keep enough strategic reserve to stay safe in San Diego," says Cal Fire Battalion Chief Jon Heggie.Through a process called "Mutual Aid," Heggie says Cal Fire sent three strike teams, consisting of 15 engines, to help around the state. That leaves 32 engines in San Diego. Heggie says those engines are placed around the county ready to pounce on any fires that spring up."The conditions they've seen up there are very similar to what we're seeing right now," says Heggie. But, he added that all time off had been canceled for Cal Fire employees while San Diego is in a Red Flag Warning."Everyone from the Chief down to the firefighters, they're staying in a heightened state of readiness," he says. "We'll never exceed those thresholds to make sure that we have enough adequate resources available for any fire that starts here in San Diego."Cal Fire's ability to respond quickly was put to the test Monday, when a house fire erupted in Ramona. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A judge has ruled that the government can continue waiving environmental laws to proceed with construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall.Judge Gonzalo Curiel issued the ruling Tuesday afternoon. The ruling allows 14 miles of border wall to be built southeast of San Diego.The ruling comes one day after the Washington Post reported that President Trump will visit border wall prototypes in mid-March. In early February, ABC News reported that the Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to protect endangered butterflies. Environmentalists claim the Quino checkerspot butterfly and a number of other species could be in danger if construction of the border wall continues. California Attorney General Xavier Becerra said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that "A medieval wall along the U.S.-Mexico border simply does not belong in the 21st century.”Read the full statement below:“We remain unwavering in our belief that the Trump Administration is ignoring laws it doesn’t like in order to resuscitate a campaign talking point of building a wall on our southern border. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A previously-deported sex offender who tried to enter the U.S. illegally was arrested Sunday by Border Patrol agents.On July 5 around 1:30 a.m., agents patrolling the U.S./Mexico border near Tecate saw three people enter the U.S. illegally, the agency said.All three men were arrested and, after fingerprinting all three, a records check revealed that one of the men, a 33-year-old Mexican national, had been convicted for sex crimes against a child.According to the agency, the man had been convicted in 2006 of lewd acts upon a child and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was removed from the U.S. in 2014.The man is currently being held in federal custody pending charges for felony illegal re-entry after deportation, Border Patrol says. 771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Carlos family hit hard by the pandemic is picking up the pieces after a fire gutted their home.Raegan Gaedke's brother shot cellphone video of smoke pouring out of their home on Verlane Drive on Sunday evening. Minutes before, Raegan, 16, and her brother Ryley, 17, had returned home from a grocery run, before discovering smoke in their parents' bedroom."Ran and got my dog out. My brother turned off the power and got the fire extinguisher, but it was too late. The fire spread too much," said Gaedke.Their mom Cyndi, who was visiting relatives, says fire crews later told them the cause was a window air conditioner. The home they had been renting for the last 12 years is a total loss."So hard for me to comprehend we have nothing. It's all gone," said Cyndi.Cyndi says they did not have renters insurance. It's a purchase set to the side."You think you'll get back to it, and you don't. Won't make that mistake again. It's hard to describe how stressful this has been," said Cyndi.The stress levels already high since the start of the pandemic. Cyndi's husband, the breadwinner of the family and a commercial fisherman, has been out of work. His job counted on now-grounded international flights for shipping. The amount of money they family is receiving from unemployment is modest. Paying the rent had become a concern."We did have quite a bit of savings, but that's all gone. it's been tough and awful. My husband has had a lot of anxiety, as well as me," said Cyndi.Right now, family members are staying with relatives. A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family. 1617

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A nurse who pleaded guilty in the brutal death of her boyfriend's baby has been granted parole."Angry, angry," said Deanna Stanley, the grandmother of 7-month-old Nicole Alegado.Stanley spoke to 10News after attending a state parole board hearing Thursday and learning the woman who killed her granddaughter was granted parole.Back in 2008, in order to avoid a trial, the baby's family supported a plea deal. "Emotionally we couldn't handle it," said Stanley.Eileen Villamajor, a nurse living in National City, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the killing her boyfriend's daughter, saying she was frustrated by her cries. She was sentenced to 15 years to life."Eileen picked her up by the hair and threw her to the ground twice. Nicole remained crying. Eileen held her head in her hands until she heard it crack, at which time Nicole stopped crying," said Stanley.Stanley sat through those unbearable details at Villamayor's parole hearing in Corona. She listened to Villamayor's petition, including her good behavior in prison and completion of classes to control her emotions. Stanley is still convinced Villamayor is dangerous."For someone to do something that something horrific with their hands ... I don't know if you can cure that in a class," said Stanley.Stanely says Villamayor showed no remorse during the hearing but revealed something new about the motive, which involved about Nicole taking up her father's time."She said she hated Nicole, resented Nicole. To me that shows premeditation. If we had gone to trial, I think she would have been convicted of first-degree murder," said Stanley.In the end, the parole board deciding to grant Villamayor parole. She could serve 13 years and 7 months of a sentence of 15 years to life. Proposition 57 passed in 2016 allows her to accrue good behavior credits which can reduce a life sentence."There is no justice here," said Stanley.The earliest Villamayor can be released is March 2020. The family has 120 days to appeal to the governor's office to overturn the decision, which they plan to do. The District Attorney's office, which backed the family at the hearing, says they will likely write a letter urging the governor to overturn the parole decision. 2250
