"Lemonade stand! Snack bar!" they shout loudly. At the corner of Peabody Drive and Hardy Cash Drive in Hampton, Virginia you'll find a group of determined kids."We are raising money for single mothers that are struggling. They have to do so much on their own," said 11-year-old Cartier Carey.Cartier is the leader of the "Carti Pack" and CEO of his lemonade stand, one unlike any other."We sell lemonade, chips, candy - all types of stuff that people want, and it's not expensive," he said.Each dollar spent towards a cup of the summertime drink and goodies on the side goes towards buying diapers for local families in need."The diapers are for mothers or anyone that has babies," Cartier said.It's an unusual business model, but one that's working."There's a shortage of Pampers and wipes in the stores because of the pandemic, so this couldn't have come at a better time," said Anthony Carey, Cartier's dad.A rising sixth-grader like Cartier and his friends could be out playing sports or riding bikes, but instead, they're helping single mothers in the community."There are a lot of grown-ups out there not doing what we're doing," Cartier said."As a parent, it makes me feel spectacular," Anthony said.This lemonade stand isn't a first for Cartier. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego County Communications Office reminded residents Thursday that they have access to nearly 55,000 e-books and audiobooks for free via the county library system.County residents can download digital titles to their tablet or e-reader by downloading the Libby app and linking it with their library account.Residents can also use the library's Overdrive program to download digital titles and collections.E-books and audiobooks can be checked out for seven, 14 or 21 days. At the end of the check-out period, the title will return to the library's collection, eliminating late fees and the possibility of physical damage to the title.According to the county library, digital checkouts in 2018 have increased by roughly 50 percent to more than 1.5 million compared to 2017. The county library system is one of 30 in the world to surpass 1.5 million digital checkouts."The Library encourages reading in every way -- to develop skills, create opportunities and motivate a love of reading,'' said Migell Acosta, the county's library director. "To meet the community's steadily increasing interest in audiobooks and e-books, we have made significant investments into our digital collections, and we look forward to adding many new titles in 2019.''The library's digital collection also includes more than 150 magazines along with its collection of e-books, according to the county. LAKESIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what led to a shooting in Lakeside Monday evening. The shooting happened just before 6 p.m. near the off-ramp of State Route 67 and Winter Gardens Boulevard. Deputies and paramedics found the victim, a man in his 20s, suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was taken to the hospital. The shooter fled the scene in a white Chevrolet Impala. A detailed description of the suspect wasn’t available. YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office says a husband shot and killed his wife, a mother of two, after mistaking her for an intruder early Thursday morning.According to a spokesperson, deputies were called to the home around 2 a.m. Thursday after a report of a woman shot and not breathing.The sheriff's office said the family was sleeping and the 30-year-old husband woke up to what he thought was someone breaking into his home. He reports that he grabbed his gun, saw what he believed to be an intruder and pulled the trigger.The person he thought was the intruder was actually his 31-year-old wife.Two children, ages 2 and 4, were inside the home at the time and neither were injured.Deputies say the husband was taken into custody and is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail as the investigation continues. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The clock is ticking as family members of Suzanne Johnson wait to see if Governor Jerry Brown will grant clemency before he leaves office Monday. Six-month-old Jasmine Miller died while under the care of Johnson at her home daycare center in North Park in 1997. Johnson found guilty of assaulting Jasmine and sentenced to life in prison. Prosecutors argued Johnson was frustrated by the baby's crying, pointing to the accepted signs of Shaken Baby Syndrome: Bleeding behind the eyes, and bleeding and swelling in the brain."We've seen a major shift in the science of Shaken Baby Syndrome," said Mike Semanchik, managing attorney with the California Innocence Project at California Western School of Law.According to Semanchik, "based on the science we know now, the jury at the time would not have found Suzanne Johnson guilty." Medical consensus now says those telltale signs of shaken baby syndrome can be caused by various medical conditions and accidental falls from short heights.Johnson says Jasmine fell out of her high chair but seemed okay, before becoming unresponsive hours later."The evidence supports an equal theory for a fall, as it does for an intentional act," said Semanchik.The science has not been enough to persuade the courts. All appeals for a new trial have been rejected."Missing her has been pretty horrific," said Sharon Johnson, Suzanne's daughter-in-law. She describes her mother-in-law as a loving woman who has remained positive, leading bible study and other groups in prison. She's up for parole in 2020, but Sharon hopes a petition for clemency on the governor's desk will be granted."She's 74. She's been wrongly incarcerated for 20 years. We just want her home," said Sharon Johnson. Semanchik says new evidence also shows paramedics forced a breathing tube down the baby's esophagus rather than her windpipe, an error that could have contributed to her death.A spokesperson for the District Attorney's office says they are in touch with Jasmine's family and remain opposed to the clemency petition.Former District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, who did not support arguments for a new trial, has submitted a letter in support of the clemency petition."She has done well in prison.
