SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of Americans filed for unemployment for the first time last week, leading to increased competition for the jobs that are available. The Labor Department reported Thursday that nearly 2.9 million workers are now seeking weekly payments from the government amid coronavirus-related closures. In San Diego County, the Workforce Partnership reports that it has received notice from 92 companies totaling roughly 12,000 workers — those notices, however, are voluntary, so the actual number could be much higher. RELATED: Will you qualify for a ,200 COVID-19 stimulus check? In all, the workers are largely from retailers, restaurants, and hotels, which comprise about 350,000 workers in the region. Those workers could receive up to 0 per week from the state of California, plus an additional 0 from the federal government's stimulus package. The bottom line: there are more people out of work now than jobs available. "I'm in an industry that is vulnerable to situations like this in the future, so what do I have to do about it to guarantee that this doesn't happen to me and my family again in the future? That's my question," said Sean O'Hara, who recently lost his job as general manager of the now-closed Splash Cafe at the Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, which is operated by the French Gourmet. "All the restaurants are closed that I can see. A couple of bakeries are staying open."RELATED: San Diego grocery stores hiring to address demand amid virusThe Workforce Partnership says there are jobs available in San Diego, beyond grocery stores and delivery services. Rachel Merfalen, the agency's director of business development, said drug stores, hardware stores, and home health services are also hiring and many of the jobs are flexible and entry level. "A lot of the influx in hiring that's happening right now is in response to this current situation, and so a lot of these positions, while some may continue to be permanent, I think a lot of them are temporary by nature," Merfalen said. RELATED: 3.3 million seek US jobless aid, nearly 5 times earlier highMerfalen said a great way applicants can separate themselves from the rest of the applicants is to speak to one of the partnership's jobs coaches, and have them help make the connection to employers. Applicants can sign up for those free services, and apply for jobs, at workforce.org/portal. 2405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A previously-deported sex offender who tried to enter the U.S. illegally was arrested Sunday by Border Patrol agents. On July 5 around 1:30 a.m., agents patrolling the U.S./Mexico border near Tecate saw three people enter the U.S. illegally, the agency said. All three men were arrested and, after fingerprinting all three, a records check revealed that one of the men, a 33-year-old Mexican national, had been convicted for sex crimes against a child.According to the agency, the man had been convicted in 2006 of lewd acts upon a child and sentenced to 10 years in prison. He was removed from the U.S. in 2014.The man is currently being held in federal custody pending charges for felony illegal re-entry after deportation, Border Patrol says. 771

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report found that San Diego is one of the worst cities to buy a home, but a nearby city may give San Diegans hope. The report by GOBankRates lists San Diego as one of the 15 worst placed to buy a home in the country. The site says home prices in San Diego have increased by 1.8 percent over the last year. In the last five years, home values have grown by a little more than 33 percent. “The populous city of San Diego may be home to over 1.3 million people, but home values grow slower than some of the smaller, neighboring cities. San Diego only saw home values increase at a rate of 1.8% over the past year,” the site says. A better option, the website says, is National City, where home values have increased over the last five years by more than 49 percent. “National City offers a smaller footprint for a better value. The median home value is an impressive 5,500, which is almost 0,000 cheaper than San Diego.”If you are considering buying in San Diego, there are options. A new housing development is going up in Otay Mesa geared toward first-time buyers. There's also hope for teachers. School districts around San Diego could begin building affordable housing for employees and teachers struggling to make ends meet. 1267

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A new report from the California Association of Realtors shows how much San Diegans need to make to buy a home. According to the report, you'll need to make well over 0,000 to qualify for a home loan. 6,270 to be exact. And that's the minimum qualification. The report also places the median home price in San Diego County at 0,000, ,000 above a report from April which indicated San Diego homes had a median price of 0,000. In the state of California, the median home price is more than 8,000, meaning that, on average, you'll need to make 1,500 statewide to pay for a home. What does the housing market look like in the rest of the U.S.? According to data from the association, the median home price in the rest of the country is a modest 5,500. You'd have to make ,820 to qualify for a loan of that size. So why is the California housing market so expensive? There are a lot of reasons, but in a report from the Sacramento Bee, Brian Uhler of the non-partisan California Legislative Analyst's Office gives one reason. Uhler says many places in California are great places to live, so, in an effort to protect the status quo, residents in those communities turn to lawmakers to create barriers to building new housing.Uhler added that California's coastal cities are, as far as housing construction, among the slowest growing in the U.S., comparing their growth to shrinking Rust Belt cities.  1505

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A police pursuit involving a man who failed to yield that started in the Los Angeles area took authorities all the way to San Diego Thursday. The suspect, later identified as Karl Flores, 34, was driving a red Honda Civic when he failed to yield on Washington Boulevard at about 11 a.m., according to California Highway Patrol. The man had first been reported as a stolen vehicle suspect, but police eventually said that was not the case.Flores then took police on a pursuit through the Los Angeles area, at one point hitting a pedestrian riding a scooter. The pedestrian suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to police.WATCH THE PURSUIT LIVE:Flores continued into the Inglewood area before avoiding a PIT maneuver by police that sent the Honda spinning, KABC reported. He continued fleeing police, avoided more PIT maneuver attempts, and drove from southbound Interstate 405 to Interstate 5 into San Diego. The vehicle stopped on I-5 near Las Pulgas Rd. at about 1:30 p.m., prompting a police standoff and Sig Alert was issued for both directions of I-5 at Las Pulgas Rd. CHP said it appeared the vehicle had run out of gas. Officers were able to drag the man from the vehicle with the help of a K9 officer just after 2 p.m. CHP said the man would be taken into custody following treatment at a nearby hospital.Traffic on SB I-5 backed up for miles during the standoff, eventually reopening at about 2:30 p.m.WATCH THE CHP'S PRESS CONFERENCE ON THE CHASE: 1493
