As Chicago continues to grapple with gun violence, one jail is trying something different in an effort to combat the problem.The program is called SAVE, and it’s spearheaded by Sheriff Tom Dart of the Cook County Jail. The program aims to save a community from gun violence by targeting people who might be able to make the biggest difference.“We can continue with the broken model, make them worse than when they came in here, because they’ll be associated with other criminals, and then jettison them to a community where they’ll be a cancer, or we can take a person who has issues, break down what those issues are, address those, and now send them back to a community where now they’re sort of a light in the community,” Sheriff Dart explains. “They went from being the cancer to where they’re the one people are talking about.”During these classes, officials and inmates will start with a game. It helps to ease the tension in a room, where the men, who are in their late teens and early 20’s, are asked to dig deep on tough topics involving their personal lives.The program also aims to help the men manage anger and resolve conflict. It even trains on how to land a job or start a career.SAVE stands for the Sheriff’s Anti-Violence Effort.“The larger population we have here are folks that could actively have their trajectory changed if given different opportunities, different ways to look at life,” Sheriff Dart explains.The SAVE program is unique to Cook County, and it’s totally voluntary. It was created as a way to combat Chicago’s gun epidemic, by tackling the cognitive behavior of the men who, for whatever reason, ended up behind bars.“The reality is if you’re [going to] address these problems, you have to address the players in the system,” says Sheriff Dart. “The players all have individual issues, all have good things and bad things that they have.”For inmate Rico Potts, it’s helping him to realize his long-term goals.“Career wise, I wanna be a psychologist. I wanna talk to kids and help kids, because I feel like my story will kinda help them,” Potts says.He’s seeing firsthand how these instructors’ stories are helping him.The program stuck with former inmate Jelani Hines, who got out of jail but still keeps in touch with the program, saying it helped him land a job.“You have to be willing to commit,” Hines says. “Nobody’s gonna hold your hand.” 2393

AMITY, Ind. -- An Indiana family lost nearly a dozen show pigs when several barns caught fire on their farm early Saturday morning. The fire broke out in the Amity, Indiana area of Johnson County between Franklin and Edinburgh just before 6 a.m. The Amity Fire Department Chief Jackie Brockman said several structures were already up in flames when crews arrived on the scene. The pigs were being raised by the owner's 9-year-old and 13-year-old sons. Firefighters were able to contain the fire so it did not spread to a nearby barn where the family housed several other pigs and those pigs are safe. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but Chief Brockman says they believe it was accidental.   974

Amid the pandemic, food banks are on average serving 60% more families than a year ago, according to a recent analysis by Feeding America. The analysis found that 80% of food banks in the Feeding America network have seen an increase in demand amid the pandemic.Despite this jump in demand, the organization says that food banks have “become accustomed” to increased demand for services. Feeding America’s analysis says that 40% of those going to food banks this year are doing so for the first time.Compounding issues for many families, food prices have jumped in the last year, according to USDA analysis. According to the USDA, the average cost of food prepared at home has increased 4% from October 2019 through October 2020. In the last 20 years, the average increase of food prices per year is 2%.The increase in prices has been most pronounced in meat, poultry and dairy. From October 2019 through October 2020, meat prices jumped 6.6%. Previously, meat prices generally increased 3% a year.The issue of increased prices was something that Feeding America leaders addressed last month as lawmakers have failed to come to an agreement on a new stimulus plan.“With food prices increasing at the fastest rate in 50 years and predictions that 1 in 4 children could face hunger this year, a 15 percent increase to the maximum SNAP benefit is the most effective way to meet the moment,” Kate Leone, Chief government relations officer at Feeding America, wrote. “Boosting SNAP benefits will provide families more resources to purchase the food they need through purchases at local grocers and businesses, which will stimulate economies across the country.“With the nation’s public health and economic crises continuing without an end in sight, our economy and families are being pushed to the very brink. (AP) — Students at the University of Michigan are being ordered to stay in place for two weeks after a surge of coronavirus cases driven by social gatherings on and off-campus.Local health officials said Tuesday that the surge is overwhelming their ability to confront the pandemic. Officials say coronavirus cases related to the university represent 61% of the total in Washtenaw County, compared to just 2% in August.More than 1,000 students have been infected since the start of the fall term despite limits on gatherings and classes that are mostly held online. Undergraduate students can attend in-person classes and also leave their residences for exercise, work, food, medical appointments, voting, and religious services.In response to the order, university President Mark Schlissel says even more undergraduate classes will shift to remote instruction. Andrew Drechsel, who was crowned champion of "American Ninja Warrior" last year, was arrested and federally charged "with seeking sex with a minor and inducing her to send him sexual explicit images," U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Craig Carpenito said in a statement."Drechsel, 31, of Saint Cloud, Florida, was charged with the manufacture of child pornography, enticement of a minor to travel for illicit sexual conduct, traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct with a minor, and use of interstate commerce to entice a minor," Carpenito said in the news release. "He (Drechsel) made his initial appearance today (Wednesday) in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, prior to his transfer to the District of New Jersey."According to the court documents, Drechsel, and the alleged victim first met in 2014 at an event attended by numerous "American Ninja Warriors" contestants.In 2015, Drechsel and the alleged victim, then 15, first had sex at his Hamden, Connecticut gym, the court affidavit stated.The affidavit says the teen told her mother, who then confronted Drechsel. The mother said when told Drechsel that the alleged victim had just turned 15, he didn't deny having sex but stated he did not know her daughter's age, the affidavit said.In June 2019, the alleged victim, who was 19, made a complaint to the Cherry Hill Police Department in New Jersey, stating that she and Drechsel had sexual encounters multiple times when she was 15 to 17 years old, court records said.Drechsel's lawyer, Frank Riccio, said in a Tweet on Tuesday that his client plans on pleading not guilty. 1634
