WASHINGTON (AP) — Hackers got into computers at the U.S. Treasury Department and possibly other federal agencies, touching off a government response involving the National Security Council. Security council spokesperson John Ullyot says on Sunday that the government is aware of reports about the hacks and is taking steps to identify and remedy any possible issues. Reuters reported Sunday that a group backed by a foreign government stole information from Treasury and a Commerce Department agency responsible for internet and telecommunications policy. Intelligence agencies are reportedly concerned that other agencies were hacked using similar tools. The Treasury Department on Sunday deferred comment to the National Security Council. 748

Vladimir Putin is set to extend his power in Russia for another six years after winning Sunday's presidential election with the majority of the vote, exit polls show.Putin was widely expected to win his fourth term as President, with no meaningful opposition in the running and his?fiercest opponent, Alexei Navalny, barred from the race.Exit polls are not final, and official results will be released in coming hours.Putin has dominated Russian politics for 18 years and was already the country's longest-serving leader since Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.Putin's critics have slammed the election as unfair, citing the Kremlin's tight control over the media, quelling of the opposition and restrictions on some election monitors to ensure a free vote.Opposition activists and the non-governmental election monitoring group Golos reported voting irregularities. By early evening Sunday, Golos had counted 2,000 incidents, including observers being prevented from carrying out monitoring. The vote was a huge logistical undertaking, taking place across Russia's 11 time zones over 22 hours, in around 97,000 polling stations, according to the Central Election Commission. There was little fanfare in the campaign period and Russian news was dominated by developments in political crises between Russia and Western powers. 1327

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is going to keep people in suspense about how he'll respond to the election. The Republican president is refusing to publicly commit to accepting the results in November. Trump made a similar threat weeks before the 2016 vote. Trump told Chris Wallace on Fox News Channel this weekend it's too early to make such an ironclad guarantee and scoffed at polls showing him lagging behind Democrat Joe Biden. The Biden campaign says the American people will decide the election and the government “is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.” Trump also is hammering the Pentagon brass for favoring renaming bases that honor Confederate military leaders.During the interview with Wallace, the president also reiterated there will not be a nationwide mask mandate. He said he is "a believer in masks," but the decision to require face coverings is up to the states to decide. 939

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is committing at least 0 million to help Joe Biden’s presidential campaign in the crucial battleground state of Florida.A spokeswoman for the effort told NBC News that the money will be used to turn out voters for Biden through a mix of television and digital ads. She says ads will be run in both English and Spanish in an effort to target Hispanic voters, a key demographic. The spokesperson says the goal of the effort is to help the Biden campaign save money that can be used in other swing states, like Pennsylvania or Wisconsin.Bloomberg’s spending reflects Democrats’ concerns about the tight race in a state that's a priority for President Donald Trump.A victory for Biden in Florida would significantly complicate Trump’s path to reaching the 270 Electoral College votes needed to secure a second term.Bloomberg launched his own campaign for the Democratic nomination late last year amid worries about the strength of Biden’s campaign, but the billionaire dropped out in March and endorsed Biden. 1078
