SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Kreg Van Hoesen has had to fight for his life for much of his life, born with congenital heart defects in 1986 when doctors didn't know until after he was born. Two surgeries at two months of age would be followed by two more at two years old. Then when Kreg was six, doctors tried to correct the defects in his heart. Unfortunately it didn't work. His mother, Pam Van Hoesen remembers every detail of the family's hard fought battle to keep Kreg alive. "His outlook was bleak," she says, "but he managed to get through it and within a week, he got a heart." They know the donor heart came from a family in the Midwest who lost a child traumatically, but they've never heard back from them after writing letters, and they understand. Pam says, "for someone else to lose a child in order for your child to live is mind boggling."To pay forward that most precious gift, the family became champions of organ donation. It started eight years after Kreg got his heart. Pam Van Hoesen's friend needed a kidney. Pam tested and hers was the best match. Then in 2003 Kreg went into kidney failure. The anti-rejection drugs from Kreg's heart transplant were very hard on his kidneys, and when he needed a kidney transplant, his dad Mark stepped in. Kreg initially rejected Mark's kidney however, and he almost lost his battle to survive again. Eventually his body accepted it, and he had 16 years with that kidney. But Kreg's health took a turn for the worse early this year. All three of his sisters tested to find the best match. Kreg's sister Kendyl was the closest match. Kendyl's mother-in-law also happened to be a kidney donor as well, and with both of her own parents living healthy lives with just one kidney, Kendyl didn't hesitate to agree to donate hers to her brother. She explains that the entire family was nervous going into this surgery. They knew as the donor, their family had a long track record of success living with just one kidney, but they worried about how Kreg would do, undergoing his third transplant surgery. "He's a real fighter and real survivor... but most of his surgeries didn't go as planned." It so happens that Kreg was due for success however, and this transplant, which was done at UCSD Medical Center, has been his easiest so far. The family, including Kreg, believe their mission is to get out the word about organ donation. Kreg says he's shocked by how many people are apprehensive about it, whether a living donation, or a donation after someone dies. "I do hope this can change the perspective," he says. 2568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - In a downtown courtroom on Friday afternoon, attorneys battled over a request to halt the shutdown orders for San Diego bars, restaurants, and gyms.Attorney Bruno Katz is representing a group of local businesses like Cowboy Star restaurant and Bear Republic Crossfit gym, which are seeking an emergency injunction. He told the judge, “What I do want to say, your Honor, is that the temporary restraining order is based on data. It’s based on facts. It’s based on science and it's based on the state not showing why it has targeted these industries when the science and data doesn't support it.”The state argued that the damage to businesses pales in comparison to the damage on human life. “There's nearly a thousand dead San Diegans and the numbers are getting dramatically worse and have been for the last couple of weeks,” said state Deputy Attorney General Jonathan Eisenberg.Restaurants and gyms were open for indoor operations with limited capacities under the red tier. However, last Saturday’s move to the purple tier forced them to shutdown indoor services completely and move outside. They're suing Governor Newsom and San Diego County, arguing that the closures go against their rights and are causing financial devastation.The suit was filed on behalf of all restaurants and gyms.Local owner of The Studio SD fitness studio Rachel Racz spoke to ABC10 News before Friday’s hearing. She told ABC10 News in part, “It's been rough to shut down business again when people were feeling normal and then we see the County of San Diego's Department of Health say that gyms are only point .4% of cases in San Diego and it's really frustrating as a business owner where we have these ebbs and flows- where we can be open and then we can’t.”Superior Court Judge Kenneth J. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — La Mesa-Spring Valley School District officials have postponed the district's planned reopening date, citing concerns that San Diego County will soon be placed in the state's most restrictive reopening tier. The district's reopening has been moved from Oct. 12 for hybrid learning to the week of Nov. 30, according to the district. The hybrid learning plan will bring small groups of students to in-person classes two days a week.LMSV said the decision was based on the county's potential rollback into California's purple reopening tier and the district's proximity to the College Area, where cases linked to San Diego State have steadily increased since school resumed on Aug. 24.RELATED: Supervisors to discuss reopening options if San Diego moves into more restrictive tierThe district called SDSU's case increase "particularly concerning.""We decided to postpone our reopening date after learning the county would likely be downgraded to tier 1 on the state COVID-19 tier system. We felt it was best to err on the side of caution and postpone our reopening date in the hopes that the outbreaks subside," the district said in a statement to ABC 10News."We want nothing more than to welcome students back on campus, but we must ensure that it is safe to do so. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – James Prince, the owner of a recycling center in Point Loma, went to the Peninsula Community Planning Board Thursday night to try and save his business.Prince Recycling is being evicted from his location on the property of the Stump’s Family Market Place.Prince Recycling has become a controversial business in the past one or two years.  It is the only recycling center in the area, but many neighbors have started complaining that it is bringing homeless problems to the area.Dirk Stump, the owner of the grocery store, confirmed he is evicting the recycling center, ending their agreement for the past five years. The area is required to have a recycling center, and Dirk says the state could fine him more than ,000 a year for cutting ties with recycling, but at this point, he is willing to pay, because he says the center is attracting homeless and chasing away customers.  He said Mr. Prince is a good person and it was purely a business decision.“I recycle thousands of tons of material, and it’s not just from homeless,” Prince said.  “Not only that, they’re people too. What am I supposed to do? You’re homeless you can’t come in?” The planning board did not take any action on the issue. Prince says he’s not making any plans to vacate.
