San Diego (KGTV)- After receiving a failing grade by the American Lung Association, the County of San Diego is rolling out some new tools to fight air pollution. In port-side communities like Sherman Heights, Logan Heights and Barrio Logan, the rates for Asthma are the highest in the state. This morning county leaders unveiled its new innovative monitors and cars. “This has never been done before,” says Aclima’s Chief Scientist, Melissa Lunden. For the past three months, two air quality cars have been driven around the county for 24 hours at a time collecting samples of air pollutants. “You get a map, a street by street map, of what the air pollution is and what the air pollutants are on those particular streets,” says Lunden. “That allows you to really locate in that region an area of concern.”Stationary monitors will also be set up in areas like Barrio Logan, Sherman Heights, and Logan Heights. Officials will be able to monitor what’s being inhaled by the people who live in these communities. “What we expect to happen is we’re going to find elevated levels of pollution at the street level that we didn’t see with our regional monitors,” says Assistant Director of the Air Pollution Control District, John Adams. With each monitor, the air is pulled into an inlet over 24 hours. The filter is then taken out and tested in a lab. The Air Pollution Control District has already placed monitors along Interstate 15 in Carmel Mountain and Interstate 5 in San Isidro. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris projected to take the White House, Harris will have to resign her seat in the U.S. Senate.The power to fill that seat would fall to Governor Gavin Newsom, and the political jockeying for his pick is well underway.“This is one of the best jobs in American politics, one of the most prominent jobs in American politics and every California political leader wants it,” said UC San Diego political science chair Thad Kousser.Kousser expects Newsom will want to make history with the diversity of his pick, should he have the opportunity.Others are thinking along the same lines. Groups like Equality California have sent the governor a list of their preferred LGBTQ candidates, which would be a first for California.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez tweeted out her own list Friday of Latino candidates, another potential first for the state.“We are the largest demographic in this state, and growing,” she wrote. “It’s time we have a Latino/a US Senator.”Political analyst Laura Fink says the governor is going to have to balance a lot of competing interests.“First and foremost, what's going to be best for California? And then of course, what's going to be best for Governor Newsom moving forward as he looks toward his political ambitions,” Fink said, referring to the possibility that Newsom could run for president.There have been dozens of names floated as potential picks, including California Secretary of State Alex Padilla and state Attorney General Xavier Becerra.Both are sons of Mexican immigrants who would be the first Latino senators in California history.But don’t pencil either in just yet, according to Fink.“Kamala Harris is leaving one of only 26 women in the Senate. That's one out of four. Last time I checked, [women] are north of 50 percent of the population. So that is something that will need to come into consideration,” she said.Rep. This would be another first for her should she ascend to that seat.”Atkins declined to say if she was interested in the job or being vetted.“Right now, my focus is on the work before us, and the path ahead of us," she said in a statement to ABC 10News.Atikins said she was “focused on the outcome of the election and our state Senate races, looking forward to a Biden/Harris administration, and continuing our work here in California.”The power to fill a vacant U.S. Senate seat comes from the 17th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. He ended up converting his van to include a fridge, a fold out bed, lighting and uses a bucket with kitty litter for the restroom. Now a year later, he’s embraced van life and says it provides a chance to travel and save money.“It’s more freedom, but at the same time it’s more responsibility,” Allen said.Allen isn’t alone. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve.
