A shark attack killed a 65-year-old man as he was swimming off the coast of Maui Saturday morning, according to authorities.The man, who was from California, encountered the shark about 60 yards off of Kaanapali Beach at around 8:30 a.m. local time, Dan Dennison, a spokesman for Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources, told CNN.As a matter of protocol, authorities have posted signs along a half-mile stretch beach warning people of a shark, Dennison said.The man's identity has not been released. A University of North Carolina study warns against the use of THC or CBD by women who are in the early stages of pregnancy. The study, which was published this week, tested the use of both synthetic and natural cannabinoids on mice. The results found that one-time exposure to cannabinoids early in a pregnancy can cause growth issues in a developing embryo. UNC said that this was the first time a study of this kind has been performed on mammals. Researchers said that they found the effects of CBD and THC are potentially very similar to what is seen in fetal alcohol syndrome. The researchers added that cannabinoid use disrupted signaling between molecules and cells that control growth and development. Researchers believe the results on mouse fetuses would be similar to human fetuses.“The development of the embryo in this time period is very similar across all vertebrates,” said Scott Parnell, a member of the UNC Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies. “In this study we also test a synthetic cannabinoid in zebrafish that yielded similar growth deformations as the natural CBs. Having the same results across animal models reinforces our findings.”The researchers administered enough CBD that is considered a therapeutic range for humans. The THC concentration was of similar levels to smoking marijuana. “It is concerning how little we know about the use of marijuana, its CBs, and products like CBD oil during pregnancy,” Parnell said. “We know that there is no safe period to drink alcohol during a pregnancy, and I think this research shows the same is likely true of marijuana use.”To read more on the study, click 1639

A student gunman opened fire at a southern California high school Thursday morning, leaving two dead and several others injured, officials said.According to authorities, the male suspect, who is a student at the school, opened fire in the quad at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita around 7:38 a.m. before classes started. Authorities were on scene by 7:40 a.m. after receiving several 911 calls about the shooting. The suspected gunman shot and killed two students, a 16-year-old female a 14-year-old male, and injured three others before shooting himself in the head, police said. He is currently in custody and being treated at a local hospital, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. Officials say he is in grave condition.Video obtained at the scene showed the suspect taking a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol from a backpack before shooting the five other students and then himself, said Capt. Kent Wegener of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.The other victims include two females, ages 14 and 15, and a 14-year-old male, police said. They were transported to local hospitals with gunshot wounds.Police are investigating the alleged shooter's home, which is near the school, authorities said at a press conference. Officials also said that Thursday was the student gunman's 16th birthday.The suspected shooter's mother and girlfriend are being interviewed by detectives. "Her Romeo sent videos, showing him training some of the stars of the VH1 reality show "Love and Hip Hop." Williams couldn't believe he was interested in her, but he was.She says their messaging got more and more intense, and he wanted her to come to his fitness studio in New York. Unfortunately, first he had to go to Africa on a short assignment.That's when trouble developed.New friend needs money to get home"He said he was over there working as a fitness trainer on a contract," Williams said. "But he was stranded and needed a way to get home."He needed money fast -- specifically 0 for a plane ticket home from Africa. He promised to return the money to her as soon as he got back to the U.S.So a love-struck Williams wired it to him through MoneyGram, and figured he was on his way.But he soon messaged her again, saying the Republic of Benin, in West Africa, would not let him leave unless he paid his income taxes first."They won't let me go home because I owe ,500 in taxes," the trainer messaged her.Before Williams took the time to realize what she was doing, she said, "I sent him a total ,076." A shopping trip for school supplies at a Texas Walmart ended in tragedy for a mother who was fatally shot while shielding her infant son from gunfire, her aunt told CNN.Jordan Anchondo and her husband were shopping for school supplies after dropping off their daughter at cheer practice when a gunman opened fire in an El Paso shopping center, Elizabeth Terry told CNN on Sunday.The mother of three later died at a hospital after using her body to protect her 2-month-old son, Terry said.Her husband, Andre, is still missing, the aunt said."How do parents go school shopping and then die shielding their baby from bullets?"
