A customer is being hailed as a hero after he charged a gunman who had opened fire early Sunday at a Waffle House in the Nashville area, killing four and injuring others.Police and an eyewitness said the man's actions prevented further bloodshed at the restaurant in Antioch.Don Aaron, spokesman for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said the customer came from the bathroom area and grappled with the suspect, identified as Travis Reinking, for control of an assault-style rifle.The man, who police did not identify, was able to wrestle the weapon away and toss it over the counter. A Howard Johnson motel room was covered with so much dog feces and urine, a special crew wearing protective clothing had to be called in to clean and sanitize the room.It was those conditions Perkins Township, Ohio police say a mother and her 3-year-old year son were living in for a month."There was liquid urine and feces seeping from underneath the door," said Perkins Township Assistant Chief Vince Donald.Someone called the Erie County dog warden to check on the condition of dogs in the room.When the warden and police entered the room, they said the walls, floors and bedding were covered in dog feces.The bathroom had three inches of dog urine and feces on the floor. The boy was also covered in dog feces.Police contacted Erie County Children Services who had the child checked out at the hospital, then placed with a family member,The boy's mother, Dezeray Powell, 21, was arrested for animal cruelty and child endangering."The child had feces on his feet and clothes,” Donald said.Powell had been keeping three Great Danes inside the motel rooms small bathroom. The dogs were so malnourished their ribs were showing, authorities said.Erie County Dog Warden Barb Knapp said the dogs are getting fresh food and water and will be nursed back to health.The owner of the hotel said Powell would never let him in the room."We didn't know what was going on in the room, because she never let me in the room," Raghbir Virk said."It was pretty heartbreaking because the child, they don't have a choice. A Detroit police officer who was recorded punching a naked woman at a Detroit hospital has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.According to Detroit Police Chief James Craig, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has also started a criminal investigation into the officer's use of force.The incident started with a call around 6:45 p.m. local time on Wednesday. When officers arrived, they saw a naked woman on the street. Officers put her in a police car and took her to Detroit Receiving Hospital. According to Craig, the woman was not agitated during the entire ride to the hospital, and officers were able to cover her up. Craig said the officers did not handcuff her.Once at the hospital, the woman threatened hospital staff and security staff, spit on several employees, bit a security officer twice and tried to bite another police officer.Craig says an officer struck the woman several times, ignoring the Detroit Police Department's de-escalation tactics."The suspect had her back turned but the officer continued to punch," Craig said. "We have grave concerns for the officer's action."The department is investigating the incident, on top of the prosecutor's office, and they are in the process of downloading body camera videos. According to Craig, the officer is an 18-year veteran of the force, is a corporal, and has a good record. He hasn't had a complaint since 2015 and not does not have a "category one use of force incident"— when a use of force incident results in injury.The woman was treated for minor injuries at the hospital and had some minor contusions but is in stable condition.Officers have interviewed several hospital staff, but are in the process of trying to locate the person who took the video showing the use of force.According to Craig, the officer did undergo their mental health and emotional survival training twice in 2016 and once in 2015.
