Many school districts around the United States have yet to declare what the upcoming school year will look like for students, whether they’ll be heading back into a school building to learn or continue remote learning. Some districts could offer a combination of both.However, as school districts and elected leaders mull over a decision, more and more parents around the country are starting to look into the idea of micro-schooling.“On March 13, our kids jumped off the school bus. Altogether, there’s nine of them in our neighborhood,” said Jennifer Quadrozzi, who lives in Massachusetts. “They were super excited. It sounded like a vacation to them. They had two weeks off, but that turned into the rest of the school year.”Quadrozzi and her 7-year-old daughter spent the end of the school year and all summer socially distancing with a group of parents and kids in their community.“We call ourselves ‘The Bubble,’” said Quadrozzi.To keep her daughter protected in their bubble, she has become one of the many parents around the country considering micro-schooling for the upcoming school year.“Right now, there are three families that are considering it. That age range would be from first grade to third grade, and we would follow the curriculum that was developed by our community, our schools,” added Quadrozzi.With micro-schooling, a few families join together to create a homeschooling pod. Quadrozzi is planning on converting her daughter’s playroom into the classroom. They’re leaning towards paying an educational facilitator to teach the children during the week.“That could be anyone from a retired teacher, to a teacher’s aide, to anyone who got laid off,” said Quadrozzi.One of the concerns around micro-schooling pods is that there are many parents who can’t afford to pay someone else to teach their kids. However, there are some parents finding a way to make micro-schooling pods more affordable.“I am a stay-at-home mom and I realize I am very fortunate to be able to do that, but the other parents in our pod are working parents,” said Gentel Larochelle.Larochelle’s pod has each parent teaching their group of five kids, one day of the week.Not only is their micro-schooling pod model more cost-effective, but it frees up time for some parents who have to work.“If this is something that parents want to do, the options are there for them it just takes a little creativity and a little bit of sacrifice,” Larochelle added.Pods can be formed, organically, with your friends and family, or there are Facebook groups now forming in almost every state around the country where parents are making connections.These two Massachusetts moms have learned the key to creating a pod is starting your search early. You’ll need time to talk with other parents that may be in your group about mostly creating a set of rule or pact for your pod, especially around social distancing outside the created classroom. Because the main reason for micro-schooling is to give kids some socialization while reducing their health risks.“My genuine hope is that this is a one-year thing and that by next fall, things are much, much different,” said Larochelle. 3165

LUBBOCK, TX — A 9-year-old girl from Texas who has been missing since 2016 was found safely on Monday after the story of her disappearance was featured on the television show "Live PD".Mariah Martinez was last seen on October 18, 2016, when she was taken from her home in Lubbock, Texas.On Friday night, the A&E show had a segment that chronicled the events that led to Mariah's disappearance. According to Fox News, Mariah's mother, Amanda, was close to losing custody of her three children and decided to take them and flee instead of going to court.A court order was issued after Amanda’s boyfriend allegedly punched Mariah's 5-year-old brother in the nose and threatened to kill the family by driving their car into a pond.The Live PD segment explained that in January 2017, police were tipped off about the family's whereabouts. Police found Amanda and two of the children, but not Mariah.The mother was arrested on felony charges, but Mariah's whereabouts remained a mystery.The television program ended by asking viewers to contact the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children if they knew anything.NCMEC posted to Facebook on Tuesday that Mariah was found in New Mexico following a viewer’s tip.The Lubbock Police Department also released a statement saying they were thankful to NCMEC for helping find Mariah.  1398

Max Booth is from Redondo Beach and was excited to go to Maine for a summer camp for the second year. This year, that didn’t happen because of coronavirus, leaving Max at home. Then, his grandparents stepped in to save the day.Tim and Joy Booth live in Pacific Beach and said right around when Max found out he would be staying home for the summer, beaches and public places in their area started opening up, so they took advantage and planned a substitute summer camp for the 10-year-old.“It gave us real happiness to figure out how to make something that was at least a little bit similar to what he might have had,” said Joy.The trio spent the last week exploring the San Diego area, completing a long list of activities like cutting wood and barbecuing at a park, going to the beach, playing at a water park, practicing archery, hiking and observing nature, completing a junior park ranger program at the Cabrillo Monument and more. They even took the time to give back to the community, spending a day shoveling sand off of steps in Pacific Beach. They said a police officer and surfer stopped to thank them, the surfer adding that he had slipped on those steps because of the built-up sand.“We swept the stairs because we wanted to help people not get any injuries from slipping on the sand,” said Max.The week may have been different than a typical summer camp, but all three said they had the best time."I would just like to say thank you for being my parents and thank you for doing all this stuff for me," said Max."You’re welcome, Max. Lowe's will host two pandemics friendly drive-thru curbside trick-or-treat events at all its locations the week of Halloween.The home improvement company announced they would host the events on Oct. 22 and Oct. 29 from 6-7 p.m."We know that customers still want to celebrate Halloween, even if the holiday may look different for us this year.
