SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday night, the Padres will welcome back one of the most iconic characters in franchise history.The Famous San Diego Chicken will return to Petco Park as part of the team's 50th anniversary celebration."It's like coming back and seeing family again," says Ted Giannoulas, the man behind the mascot. "It's great. These fans put me on the map. It was their laughter, their good faith over the decades that launched my unique career."The Chicken started in 1974 as a radio station mascot. Over the years, his popularity grew, turning the San Diego favorite in a national phenomenon.But it's been 10 years since the Chicken ruled the roost at a Padres game. The team decided their anniversary season was the right time to welcome him home."As you look back through our 50 year history, it was a piece of our story that we thought really needed to be told this year," says Marketing Director Wayne Partello.As part of the Chicken's return, the team will give away a San Diego Chicken bobble head to every fan at Saturday's game."It's the spitting image of me," says the Chicken, who partnered with the team to make sure they got every detail right, down to the coloring on individual feathers.The Chicken will also sign autographs and take pictures with fans throughout the game. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- School superintendents from South Bay, Cajon Valley, Escondido and Chula Vista Elementary came together for a virtual roundtable Wednesday. The meeting comes days after Governor Gavin Newsom released a mandate saying students can only return to campus when the county has been off the state’s watchlist for two weeks.The discussion focused on tackling challenges for the upcoming school year. All four districts say one of the main issues is a lack of funding.“I listened to the governor speaking about how money has come to school districts,” said Dr. Katie McNamara, superintendent of South Bay Union School District. “It’s good to note that none of that money has arrived yet.”She says they’ve had to dip into the district’s general funds to pay for things like PPE and improving distance learning models.Cajon Valley reopened in-person summer programs last week and say they will be staying open.The County Office of Education says the governor’s order does not apply to camps or day cares.“We have almost 5,000 students on campus, today, right now in a version of summer school that we're calling child care.”The Chula Vista Elementary Union superintendent, Dr. Francisco Escobdedo says they’re paying close attention to testing.“In order for us to feel safe our contagion levels have to lower, the curve has to plateau.”Escobedo adds they’re working on providing more internet hot spots for families who need it. 1446

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University officials say two students have tested positive for coronavirus, but that the cases are not connected and the risk to the campus is low.A statement on behalf of the campus said the school confirmed Wednesday the two students had tested positive and that both students live off-campus. The students were tested by the college's Student Health Services.The two cases are not believed to be connected to any reported off-campus gatherings, the school statement said. RELATED: San Diego State fraternities ban social events this fall due to COVID-19"The two students did not interact with campus, or with any SDSU employees outside of the SHS COVID-19 Test Collection Booth, and were not in any other spaces utilized by the campus community. The SHS COVID-19 Test Collection Booth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected as part of patient care and enhanced COVID-19 disinfection protocols," the school statement read.Since March 2020, the school says it has had 27 confirmed COVID-19 cases within the broader campus community among faculty, staff, students, and visitors to campus, including the SDSU Imperial Valley campus.The school said the risk to others on campus is low and SHS is in the process of performing contact tracing.RELATED: SDSU begins 2020-21 school year with mostly virtual classes"SHS is in the process of speaking with the individuals known to have been in direct contact with the two separate students.
