(AP) — Oregon State Police will return to Portland to help local authorities after the fatal shooting of a man following clashes between President Donald Trump supporters and counter-protesters that led to an argument between the president and the city’s mayor over who was to blame for the violence. On Saturday evening a caravan of about 600 vehicles packed with Trump supporters drove through the liberal city and was met with counterprotesters. Skirmishes broke out and, about 15 minutes after the caravan left the city, a supporter of the right-wing group Patriot Prayer was fatally shot. The circumstances of the shooting remain unclear. Video from the city shows sporadic fighting between the groups, with Trump supporters firing paintball pellets at opponents and using bear spray as counterprotesters threw things at the Trump caravan.The man killed was a member of Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group whose members have frequently clashed with protesters in Portland in the past, its founder, Joey Gibson, said Sunday. He identified the victim as Aaron “Jay” Danielson and called him a “good friend,” but provided no details. Danielson apparently also went by the name Jay Bishop, according to Patriot Prayer’s Facebook page.The Washington state-based group doesn't have a significant national footprint but is well known in the Pacific Northwest. "Very few folks do that in any industry. Certainly, it was unusual in the book industry at the time, and it’s still somewhat unusual still to this day.”Book lovers travel from all over to explore the so-called "City of Books," thrifting for old books with new ideas.“This is one of my favorite books,” Powell said.It could be a rare book, a timely book, or a book you’ve never heard of before.“It really resonates whether you’re a book lover or just someone with an interest in anything. He’s hoping that percentage will continue to rise.“If we lose independent bookstores, the importance of books in our culture will be diminished,” Hunter said.Powell says spending money at a local bookstore instead of Amazon keeps the dollars in the community. She says choosing to stop sales through Amazon was a difficult decision, but a necessary one."We’ve contemplated it for years because we know that staying with Amazon was not the best choice for our business, but it’s very hard to give up sales that you really need to keep surviving one way or another,” Powell said.Her hope for Powell’s Books is that they can connect people to the value of reading while continuing to evolve with the changes of the future.“We’re so accustomed in our modern age to the idea that the computer is the best way to find anything, but in fact, it’s very difficult to replicate the in-person experience of a bookstore,” Powell said.She says certain books will always stay relevant. 3820
Poway, Calif., (KGTV)-- The City of Poway's water boil advisory was officially lifted on Friday, but the inconvenience continues for many residents. Tenants of two dozens units at the La Privada Apartments are being evicted suddenly after management discovered rain damage. When it rains, it pours, especially for Poway resident, Allan Moore. "We have a week left," Moore said. "We have to be out by the 15th."Right in the middle of last week's city-wide water boil advisory, he and tenants in 23 other units at the La Privada Apartments were surprised with an eviction notice. It said they must leave the premises and turn in their keys by December 15, 2019. Moore said management explained that the same set of storms that destroyed the city's water system caused the water damage to the units. According to the notice, Moore will get his security deposit, December, and part of November's, rent paid back."I'm very clueless about it right now," Moore said. "And I haven't had hardly any communication."According to law experts, people in Moore's situation do have rights. Laws state that the landlord or property manager must give "reasonable" time for tenants to move out. The specifics of that time frame are in the provisions of the leasing agreement. In Moore's case, the property manager or tenant has the right to terminate a leasing contract if repairs are expected to take longer than 60 days. In this case, management company, Capital Growth Properties, states the repairs could take up to six months. How much assistance the landlord gives, such as finding new or temporary housing, is up to the property manager. Experts told 10News, in some cases, if the management companies own other properties, they may relocate tenants into unaffected, open units. However, Moore says he has not heard of this option from Capital Growth Properties. The rest, such as additional living expenses and food during the inconvenience, is up to their renter's insurance. In the meantime, Moore's house is a mess. "Christmas has kind of been put on hold," Moore sighed. A nutcracker and one sad set of lights are the only signs of the holidays in the usually festive home. "We're just going to have to take it down before Christmas, so we're like, 'let's just stop decorating,'" Moore said. Moore just hopes they find a place soon before they get kicked out.
