PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Police in California have launched an investigation after authorities received calls of six people showing signs of drug overdoses during a six-hour period in the same city. The Pasadena Star-News reported Pasadena officials say two patients died, three recovered and one remained in a hospital receiving treatment. Authorities could not say conclusively whether the two men who died succumbed to drug overdoses until they receive a coroner’s autopsy findings. (CNS) - With the coronavirus pandemic still raging in Southern California, the 2021 Rose Parade was officially canceled Wednesday, but the fate of the Rose Bowl Game remains in limbo."The health and well-being of our parade participants and guests, as well as that of our volunteer members, professional staff and partners, is our number one priority," Bob Miller, president of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association said in a statement. "Obviously this is not what any of us wanted, and we held off on announcing until we were absolutely sure that safety restrictions would prevent us from continuing with planning for 132nd Rose Parade."It's only the fourth time since 1891 that the parade has been canceled, with the three previous cancellations occurring during the wartime years of 1942, 1943 and 1945.Although the New Year's Day tradition was technically still months away, planning for the elaborate floral floats that highlight the event -- and arranging for the often international travel of participating marching bands and equestrian groups -- is a nearly yearlong process, necessitating an early decision on whether to hold the event. PHOENIX (KNXV/KGTV) - A small plane that crashed on a Phoenix street Monday morning -- killing both passengers  -- was just sold from a pilot in Solana Beach.The victims have been identified as 54 year-old Theodore Rich and 49 year-old Elaine Carpenter. FAA officials said the aircraft involved is a single-engine, home-built Acroduster. The plane went down in the intersection of 7th St. and Deer Valley Dr., near an FBI field office, at around 6:50 a.m. local time.One eyewitness said he saw the plane go down. At first he thought it was aerobatics, but after seeing the plane heading straight for the ground, he knew something was wrong. Video from the scene showed emergency crews working around debris in the roadway near several damaged cars. Police told media on scene the vehicles had substantial damage but no one on the ground was hurt.10News reporter Lauren Davis talked to Avi Maltzman, the Solana Beach man who just sold the plane to Rich this weekend. Maltzman said he flew with Rich for several touch-and-goes and described Rich as an experienced pilot. Maltzman said Rich even called him from Arizona just to let him know he made it home safely. “He impressed me very well with his flight skills. He did good eight or nine landings. He was comfortable and I felt comfortable with him," said Maltzman.Maltzman said the plane was built by professionally in Santa Barbara in 1993. Bachman said he hoped the initiative would inject some happiness into his community and help people connect with police in a positive way."We see a lot of negativity on the news, in our job, but why not accent the positive?" he said.
