SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Veterans Day will mark the last "fee-free" day of the year for visitors at Cabrillo National Monument.On Nov. 11, visitors will not be charged admission to visit the San Diego landmark as part of the National Park Service promotion — offered on several days throughout the year.Those who visit the monument at the tip of Point Loma will take in tremendous views of the San Diego skyline, Coronado, and the bay.RELATED: Bill pushes to add San Diego's Chicano Park to National Park SystemWhile there, living history re-enactors will walk visitors back in time to the Age of Exploration. Inside the lighthouse, visitors can climb its narrow staircase to peek out from the top, learn about lighthouse lights, and how lighthouse keepers lived. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Two separate clinical trials for phase three COVID-19 vaccines will resume in San Diego next week after AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson paused their students to find out why some participants became ill.“Pauses like this are absolutely common in large phase three trials so people should not be alarmed,” said Dr. Susan Little, the trial director for both studies that UC San Diego is set to take part in. “Studies will only resume when they are deemed safe for the study participants.”Little said not only are pauses like this common, but they also prove that the safety review process is working as it should.“Part of the reason we want people to understand that these are common is they will probably occur again, AstraZeneca with 30,000 people, Johnson & Johnson 60,000 people. It would be surprising if we don’t have another pause,” she explained.Little said once a trial is paused, it is immediately investigated by the independent Data Safety and Monitoring Board (DSMB). The board reviews the issues and determines if they are related to the trial.“In this case, the event and all other safety events were reviewed and deemed not related,” she said.The AstraZeneca study is scheduled to start on Monday, and UCSD will be using a mobile vaccine clinic that will travel from Chula Vista, La Mesa, and Imperial Beach.The Johnson & Johnson study is scheduled for Tuesday in National City, where trailers have been set up as a clinic at El Toyon Park.“We are signing people up right now to have scheduled visits next week,” said Little. “Safety will always remain the number one priority for study participants.”Those interested in participating in the study can sign up here.Participants must be 18 years or older and in generally good health. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two men wearing masks and gloves robbed a City Heights jewelry store Friday.One of the men jumped a display counter and confronted an employee of the Eclipse Jewelry Store at 4213 University Ave. just east of Interstate 15, police said.One man took jewelry from display trays and put it in a bag while the second man pointed a gun at the employee.The owner told 10News the men got away with about ,000 worth of mostly gold chains. He also said he thought perhaps the men had been in the store before since they seemed to know exactly what they wanted. Both men ran off and were last seen getting into a silver colored late model Toyota or Honda heading east.No one was injured in the robbery. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The woman who survived her mother jumping from the Coronado Bridge while holding her got to meet someone who was there that day.Bertha Loaiza was just 3-years-old when her mother leapt from the 246-tall bridge on August 5, 1985.Her mother never came to after hitting the water.“It was the first body I ever saw,” said Fred Maupin who was on his parents’ sailboat near the bridge that day, “at 10-years-old, that sticks with you.”Maupin remembers watching responders pull two bodies out of the water and tried to put the memory in the back of his mind, but says it grew with time.“That’s how it become more tragic and scarring,” said Maupin, “remembering that someone could do that with her baby.”RELATED:?Woman survived her mother's bridge suicide as a toddlerMaupin saw a story about Loaiza on Facebook a few weeks ago and knew he had to meet her in person.Fred hit the road early from Arizona on Friday and the two met for the first time at Gloriettta Bay Park “I feel like I have to apologize,” said Loaiza, “cause he’s gone through it in a different way than I have.”The two hugged then talked for more than an hour — Bertha even got him a gift.“I feel better that he can see that I’m okay,” said Loaiza, “he can remember that instead of the bad stuff.”“Taking a memory that was so haunting and turning the page,” said Maupin, “it’s a better ending to the story than I had in my mind.” 1436
