SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Escondido man who pleaded guilty to firing several rounds into the air in a crowded area when he couldn't get tickets to an Ice Cube concert was sentenced to three years behind bars Wednesday. Daniel Elizarraras, 22, pleaded guilty to discharging a gun at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in early September of 2018. Authorities say Elizarraras raised the gun before shooting into the air while he was in a large crowd near the ticket booth. Elizarraras was shot three times in the torso and once in the arm after he pointed the gun at a deputy. RELATED: Man admits he opened fire before Ice Cube concert at Del Mar FairgroundsElizarraras was facing up to 19 years behind bars, but a charge of assault on a peace officer with a semi-automatic weapon was dismissed as part of his plea. Defense Attorney Pedro Bernal said Elizarraras was severely depressed and trying to kill himself by suicide by cop. They asked for a lower sentence. However, the prosecution said he acted violently, causing chaos, and the situation could have been much worse.Judge Kathleen Lewis agreed saying, "I think it’s amazing that no one was injured or killed in this circumstance.”Before the shooting, officials said the venue was at capacity and began turning people away from the horse races and concert. Fights erupted between security guards and would-be concert-goers who were upset that they wouldn’t be allowed into the show. That’s when the deputy pulled out his Taser, which was ineffective. Authorities say Eikermann pulled out his gun and shot Elizarraras four times. City News Service contributed to this report. 1851

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After nearly two decades of delays and setbacks, San Ysidro community members celebrated the completion of a million major road reconstruction project Monday. For years the half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road in between San Ysidro High and San Ysidro Middle Schools lacked many safety features to protect the students who walk to and from school. An unfinished dirt path was used as a sidewalk with no fence to keep students away from oncoming vehicle traffic, no street lights or proper signage and no barriers to keep pedestrians from slipping down a steep canyon. After three years, the stretch of road now includes the safety features the community had been asking for for years. The roadway was widened and realigned, sidewalks and bike lanes were added, there's now a retaining wall, signage and lighting. The City of San Diego says the project took so long to complete after the initial groundbreaking because of the rough terrain crews had to work through.San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced reforms to overhaul the City’s infrastructure program back in 2015. He says that increased funding each year and helped speed up high priority projects, like the one on Old Otay Mesa Road. This project was one of more than 60 neighborhood projects that were fully funded after Faulconer’s reforms went into effect."Parents have a peace of mind knowing that their kids have a safe path to and from school," said Faulconer at a news conference Monday. The half-mile stretch of Old Otay Mesa Road, which was closed off to traffic for several years, officially reopened on Monday. 1612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A stolen cello worth 0,000 has been reunited with its owner. "I was driving home from downtown and I saw it. It was on C and 7th where the mailbox is at and I thought, well this is really weird. And then I got out and I knew what it was right away, so I took it," said Tony Cozano, who found the instrument. The instrument was returned to its owner, John Walz Monday. Walz is the principal cellist for the Los Angeles Opera and has played on more than 1,500 film scores from Titanic to Indiana Jones, even the new Star Wars films. RELATED: Police searching for person who reportedly stole 0,000 cello"I walked in to the house and just burst into tears. It's in perfect shape. There's no damage to it. Happy ending," said Walz in describing being reunited with the instrument. According to police, the cello was stolen on August 8 between 8 and 10 p.m. at the Town and Country Hotel on the 500 block of Hotel Circle North. In a news release, police said someone broke into the hotel room when Walz was away and stole several items. The cello was made by Mario Miralles and is valued at 0,000.  1174
