First Lady Melania Trump announced Monday that the new tennis court pavilion at the White House is completed, just six weeks before President-elect Joe Biden is expected to be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States.According to a White House press release, the project included renovating the existing tennis court and children's garden, as well as building the new pavilion, which was both "planned to blend with the existing structures on the White House grounds."The new building's design was inspired by the White House's existing architectural style, especially the East and West Wings, the first lady's office said."The colonnade, parapet wall, and fanlight windows tie the new building to the existing look and feel of the White House," the press release stated."I am pleased to announce the completion of the Tennis Pavilion on the White House grounds. Thank you to all of the talented craftsmen who made this project possible and to the generous supporters of the White House," said First Lady Melania Trump. "It is my hope that this private space will function as both a place of leisure and gathering for future First Families."Planning for the renovation began in early 2018. The Commission of Fine Arts and the National Capital Planning Commission approved the project in June 2019. Construction began that October. The White House says the project was paid for with private donations and did not disclose the cost. 1449

Food banks around the country are overwhelmed. It has become normal in recent months to see hundreds of people or cars in a line stretching for miles outside food banks and pantries. Some people are even beginning to show up hours before scheduled food distributions."I came here at 11 o'clock and there was already three people in front of me,” said Michael Sell, who waited outside a drive-thru food pantry that opened at 1 p.m. near Springfield, Massachusetts.Sell is a retired mental health professional, who now relies on pantries in the region. He says he’s seen the pantry lines grow for months."It is almost incomprehensible how many people are hurting,” Sell added.“Every distribution we are running is out of food, and I am calling suppliers, and I'm calling food banks like, 'we need more food’,” said Robin Bialecki, with the Easthampton Community Center.Bialecki also works with the Western Massachusetts Food Bank to hold a drive-thru pantry several times a month. Every month the pandemic goes on, it has become more difficult to provide enough food for all the people in her community in need. There have been times where the pantry has had to ask people to take less food so they could help more families.“A lot of people who normally give during the holiday season, they're keeping that food,” said Bialecki. “They have lost their jobs.”Some people who used to donate regularly are now seeking help from her pantry. In the 19 years that she has organized pantry food distributions, she has never seen a need at this level.“We definitely hope we do not get to the point where we will not be able to feel the need,” said Bialecki. In the next few weeks, if Congress does not pass a stimulus package, it is estimated that at least 12 million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits, and 11 to 13 million people could be evicted from their homes. Most of those people will have no other option but to turn to food banks, which are already at their brink. 1983
First of all, let's be clear: Every dog is the best dog, especially yours. But unfortunately, it looks like your drooling, howling, underwear-sniffing, sock-eating angel of perfection is not, you know, especially smart. This distressing news comes?from a new study in the journal Learning & Behavior, which seeks to answer the question, "Are dogs really that special?"While our hearts say yes, the data says no.The study compares canine cognition to other carnivores, social hunters and domestic animals (all groups that dogs fall into). Researchers used existing information on the behavior of several animals, including wolves, cats, dolphins, chimpanzees, pigs and pigeons to see if dogs possessed any special skills that weren't recorded in other species. They did not. 779
