This year, he's urging everyone to plan ahead.“Unfortunately, there’s no ADA police going around and enforcing the law so when it comes to polling stations, if you go to a polling station and you can’t get in, your only recourse is to go to Department of Justice and file a complaint, but that doesn’t help you in that moment to cast your vote," said Kovach.As if it weren't complicated enough, he's reminding everyone to be mindful of the coronavirus. The disabled are medically fragile, he says, and more susceptible to serious implications from the coronavirus.“We are seeing a lot of people calling us with trouble with voting,” Kovach said. “I know in San Diego, we had someone who tried to vote last week and was unable to get inside the polling station and another gentleman in Chicago sat in line in his wheelchair for hours around people not socially distancing or wearing a mask.”The U.S. Government Accountability office sampled 178 polling places in 2016 and found that 60% had accessibility impediments, including steep ramps, lack of signage, and poor parking or paths. Federal law requires that polling places be accessible to all voters.“Election officials need to comply with not only the Help America Vote Act... but also the Americans with Disabilities Act, so it is important to make sure that all Americans are able to vote independently and privately,” said Ben Hovland, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, which focuses on election administration and how elections are run around the country.Hovland says elections officials everywhere are scrambling. Most everyone is adapting to COVID-19 restrictions, which has forced significant changes at the local level. An autopsy has confirmed a man who died after a medical emergency mid-flight last week had COVID-19 and it likely caused his death.The 69-year-old man, identified by the coroner as Isais Hernandez, and his wife were on a United Airlines flight from Orlando to Los Angeles on December 14 when he had a medical emergency. The plane made an emergency landing in New Orleans, and Hernandez later died.The coroner for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, says Hernandez’s cause of death was “acute respiratory failure, COVID-19,” according to the New York Times.A man trained as an EMT was onboard and began CPR and life-saving measures along with other passengers and flight attendants when Hernandez fell ill.Tony Adalpa tweeted later that he had COVID-19 symptoms after helping Hernandez, and overheard his wife tell paramedics Hernandez had COVID-19 symptoms, including the loss of taste and smell.Adalpa had originally planned on getting the COVID-19 vaccine this week. An off-duty Forrest City, Arkansas police officer was shot and killed inside of his home Saturday afternoon from a gunman who sprayed dozens of bullets into the officer's home. An eyewitness told WREG-TV that Officer Oliver Johnson, Jr. was inside his home when someone in a vehicle sprayed the home with as many as 40 bullets. At least one of those bullets struck Johnson. Johnson's family attempted to perform CPR on the officer before paramedics arrived. Police told WREG that they do not believe Johnson was the target. "It was an encounter between the suspects and another group outside of the apartment," West Memphis Police Captain Joe Baker told WREG.  "This hits everyone a little close to home in law enforcement. An Arizona family is desperate for answers after their car was torched in their driveway. Laura Castaneda says she ran outside and grabbed her hose after seeing the flames. While on the way back to her car, the hose broke.In a panic, Castaneda ran to her neighbor's yard and grabbed their hose. The flames, less than 6-feet from her house, were right outside of her daughter’s bedroom window.“I was just praying, ‘I go, God, just help me through this — get me through this; keep everyone safe,’” Castaneda explained.When the fire department finally arrived, Castaneda says she broke down. “That’s kind of when I broke down,” she said. “I thought, ‘This is our only vehicle. My husband just got a new job. I’ve got seven kids — what am I gonna do?’Castaneda says they’re desperate to get a new car. Now police are looking for the person her set her car on fire.
