SHANGHAI, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) - Swiss President Doris Leuthard Thursday said the rise in bilateral trade between Switzerland and China is a delightful surprise, as she seeks to expand economic cooperation with China through a free trade agreement. The trade increase was a surprise as it came during the economic crisis last year, Leuthard said.In the first six months of 2010, Swiss exports to China increased more than 30 percent and Chinese exports to Switzerland increased more than 16 percent.Total trade volume between the two countries during the period hit 6.2 billion Swiss Francs (5.86 billion U.S. dollars), she added.Leuthard said she is optimistic about the future of Sino-Swiss bilateral trade, as the two countries are working on a free trade agreement."We are ending feasibility study (for the agreement) so both sides know the market, the opportunities and the risks very well. It is very promising," she said. After the joint feasibility study, the two sides will enter the final stage ahead of the signing of the deal, she added.Talks on the free trade agreement began in 2007 when Leuthard, as head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, signed an agreement with then-Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai. The agreement recognized the full market status of China.Switzerland hopes to be the first European country to have a free trade agreement with China, Leuthard told Xinhua in an interview last year.China is Switzerland's second largest trade partner in Asia after Japan.

BEIJING, July 26 (Xinhua) -- China's centrally administered state-owned enterprises (SOEs) jointly donated over 1.42 billion yuan (212.53 million U.S. dollars) for charitable work during the first half of 2010, the state assets watchdog said Monday. The money came from 107 of the 125 central SOEs which are overseen by China's State Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC), according to a statement posted on the SASAC's website. Some 53.63 percent of the donated funds went to disaster-hit areas, including China's southwest provinces, which were hit by a once-in-a-century drought earlier this year, and Yushu Prefecture of Qinghai Province, where a devastating earthquake struck in April.China's largest coal producer, Shenhua Group, and two oil giants, PetroChina Co. and China National Offshore Oil Corp., ranked top three in the list of the most generous donors, with their donation accounting for 36.78 percent of the total.

CHENGDU, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) - A panda cub born Friday afternoon at a breeding center in southwest China is just another panda bear born at the center. What makes her unique is her mother.Jini, the panda mother, gave birth to the female cuba at the age of 17. She is compared to a human in her sixties, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Sichuan Province said in a statement. The female cub weighed 125 grams. She was born at 14:41 p.m., four hours after Jini went into labour. Both the mother and cub are in good health, said the statement.Jini, a resident of Beijing Zoo, was sent to the Wolong center this March for the cub-birth purpose because the research center has developed expertise in breeding techniques. With a 20-year breeding history, the Wolong Giant Panda Protection and Research Center is home to the world's largest captive panda population. It has helped Beijing Zoo and Chongqing Zoo and many zoos in other countries in breeding and feeding pandas. The new cub is Jini's second. It is the eleventh cub born at the Wolong center this year."Pandas come into heat in the spring and give birth in autumn. This is the main reason for the panda 'baby boom'," said Dang Chunxiang, an expert with the Wolong Center.More than 10 other pandas are expected to give birth over the next one or two months at the Wolong center.Jini delivered her first cub "Qingqing" in 2007 when she was thirteen and a half years old, which was itself rare amongst pandas. She also entered record books with her pregnancy that lasted 324 days. Generally, pandas deliver in 120 -150 days. The length of a panda's pregnancy depends on its health and nutrition level, according to experts.About 1,600 giant pandas are living in the wilds in China. Sichuan Province and the northwestern provinces of Shaanxi and Gansu are the home to most of them. Another 290 pandas are in captive-bred programs worldwide, mostly in mainland China.

BEIJING, Aug 5(Xinhunet) -- China's machinery industry has rebounded during the first half of this year, but the momentum is likely to slow as the country's economy cools. The machinery industry has grown by 37 percent during the first six months of 2010, with a total output value of 6.59 trillion yuan, according to the China Machinery Industry Federation, a quasi-governmental institution that oversees growth of China's machinery sector. The machinery industry, which has benefited from the government's 4 trillion yuan investment spending spree, enjoyed expansion in large-scale construction projects over the last year. The construction machinery sector reported 54 percent growth during the first half of this year, according to the federation. The strong growth of the industry is based on preliminary statements by several listed machinery companies submitted to the stock exchange.Shanghai-listed Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Development Co, which is also planning to launch a listing in Hong Kong, predicted its profit would grow by 50 percent to 100 percent over the first half this year.Sany Heavy Industry Co is also expected to record 85 percent growth this year, according to Ping An Securities. The maker has already reported a growth rate of 170 percent in profit during the first quarter of this year. However, not all machinery industry sectors are reporting the same momentum as domestic demand has decreased this year. New orders in power generation equipment, transmission and substation equipment as well as heavy machinery, have rolled back this year."It is unlikely to see significant growth in the output of power equipment this year and it will probably stand around 117 million kW since the base figure is already huge," according to Cai Weici, vice-president of the federation, adding that China's output of power equipment already makes up half of the world's total."There is also less demand for heavy machinery used in steel production because the industry is eliminating outdated productivity, thus reducing market demand," Cai said.Fixed-assets investment in the machinery industry which has maintained a growth rate of over 40 percent since 2004 slowed down by 27 percent to 79.8 billion yuan, signaling less reserved strength for further growth. In term of exports, the machinery industry will be exposed to several uncertain factors including a more flexible yuan exchange rate as well as rising labor and raw material costs. The federation forecasts the industry's growth rate will be 20 percent in 2010.

BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee held its first-ever, high-level national conference on the work concerning Party history on Wednesday, prior to the 90th anniversary of its founding in July 2011.Vice President Xi Jinping called for more research and education about the history of the CPC, especially among young people.Xi, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks during a keynote speech delivered at the conference. He said the history of the 89-year-old Party is a "lively and vivid textbook," which should be well-studied, and research results should be used to "educate Party members, officials and the masses, especially the youth."Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping (L) speaks as He Guoqiang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, listens during the national work conference on the history of the CPC, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, July 21, 2010.He said Party history should be included in schools' curriculums and publicized via the Internet.Further, researchers should study the Party's history "in a practical and realistic manner," Xi said, adding that the Party's glory, experiences, traditions and fine work style should be publicized. He added that the CPC strongly opposes any tendency that "distorts or smears the Party's history."Xi said the Party, having experienced the tests of revolution, development and reform, "successfully united and led the Chinese people to achieve miracles under an extremely complicated circumstance.""Over the past 89 years, the CPC contributed greatly to the nation's independence, unification and the people's well-being," he said.President Hu Jintao, also general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, met with the delegates, mainly Party historians, ahead of the conference. The country has more than 17,000 Party history researchers working in more than 2,800 research institutes nationwide.
