SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An April 30 trial date was set today for a North Carolina man accused of raping and murdering a 79-year-old woman in her Normal Heights home more than 31 years ago.Kevin Thomas Ford, now 62, was arrested in June and charged with murder and a special circumstance allegation of murder during a rape in connection with the May 20, 1987, death of Grace Hayden.Investigator Tony Johnson of the San Diego County District Attorney's Office was reviewing the cold case in May when he decided to submit a single fingerprint found on Hayden's stove to a national database.He found a match: a print submitted by police in connection with Ford's 2015 arrest on charges of communicating threats, authorities said.The fingerprint allowed San Diego detectives to issue a warrant for Ford's arrest in July.RELATED: Man pleads not guilty in 1987 rape, murder of San Diego womanThe case is expected to get pre-assigned to a judge next month. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - CVS Health announced Thursday it is expanding its COVID- 19 no-cost testing program by adding 35 more test sites at select CVS Pharmacy drive-thrus across California, including three locations in San Diego County, amid a surge in new coronavirus cases.The opening of additional test sites on Friday adds to the 107 locations previously opened statewide, including 14 in San Diego County.The nearly 200 additional test sites opening across the country this week are among the more than 1,400 locations CVS Health has opened since May and expand the company's testing capacity to more than 1.5 million tests per month, subject to availability of supplies and lab capacity, according to President and CEO Larry J. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 18-year-old man was shot twice in the stomach during an armed robbery early Thursday morning in a Mission Beach parking lot, police said.Two 18-year-old men were in a car leaving a party at the Bahia Resort Hotel, 998 West Mission Bay Drive, when they were approached by two men on foot in a public parking lot on Gleason Road at around 12:30 a.m.One of the men on foot pulled out a gun and pointed it at the pair in the car while demanding items from them, San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims said. The victims got out of the car and the man with the gun stole a chain necklace from one of the victims.The other victim tackled the gunman and was shot twice in the stomach, the officer said.The suspects fled in an unknown vehicle and the victim who had his necklace stolen drove the gunshot victim to a hospital for treatment of his wounds, Heims said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man's body was pulled out of the water near a yacht club on Shelter Island Saturday, the San Diego Harbor Patrol said.At about 7:30 a.m. Saturday, a passerby near the Silvergate Yacht Club spotted a body floating in the water and called the harbor patrol.San Diego police were alerted and a diver removed the body of an older adult male from the water.
