N'DJAMENA, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno said Wednesday while meeting visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that his country is willing to expand cooperation with China in infrastructure building, agriculture, health care and other fields.During the meeting with Yang, who arrived here Tuesday for an official visit, the president said the Chadian-Chinese relations are based on equality, mutual respect and noninterference in each other's interior affairs. He said China has successfully completed a number of aid projects in Chad, which greatly facilitated the social and economic development of the African country.Deby said Chad is willing to boost cooperation with China in such areas as infrastructure construction, agriculture and health care, and hopes to strengthen coordination with China on international affairs.For his part, Yang said Chad has undertaken the path of national reconciliation, political stability and social progress under the leadership of President Deby, and has made significant achievements in economic development and improvement of the welfare of the Chadian people.He said bilateral relations are developing rapidly since the re-establishment of diplomatic ties, with cooperation and exchanges at different levels significantly increased. BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's domestic air travelers, as well as international passengers in and out of China, will be the biggest boost to airline industry growth over the next four years, according to an industry outlook report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Monday.Of the world's expected 800 million new travelers by 2014, about 181 million new passengers will come from China's domestic air routes, while another 33 million will be passengers flying to or from China via international routes, IATA said.China's 181 million domestic air passengers growth will lift the country's domestic passenger throughput to 379 million by 2014, only behind the United States in the world's aviation traveler volume ranking, according to IATA.The United States will remain the largest single country market for domestic passengers, with 671 million domestic air travelers and international passengers by then, according to IATA's forecast.The world's air travelers will top 3.3 billion by 2014, up by 800 million from the 2.5 billion in 2009, while world air cargo will rise to 38 million tonnes from 26 million tonnes in 2009."The forecast indicates that the world will continue to become more mobile. This creates enormous opportunities but also presents some challenges," Giovanni Bisignani, IATA' s Director General and CEO, said in the outlook report."We will need even more efficient air traffic management, airport facilities and security programs," he said, adding the shadow of the global economic recession is expected to remain over parts of the industry for some time to come.He said lingering consumer debt, high unemployment and austerity measures will dampen growth rates in Europe and North America, shifting the industry's focus eastwards.By 2014, 1 billion people will travel by air in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for 30 percent of the global total, up from 26 percent in 2009, he added.

LIMA, May 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 53.5 million people in Latin America and the Caribbean suffer from hunger or malnutrition, experts said at an international forum here Thursday.Juan Garcia, coordinator of the 5th work-group meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Initiative Without Hunger, said the figure has not increased since 1990.Experts and officials from 13 countries gathered to discuss the challenges facing regional food security and advances that have been made, hoping to make cooperative efforts to eradicate hunger and malnutrition by the year 2025.Carcia said people affected most across the continent are still those living in rural areas as well as African descendants and indigenous people who suffer from "exclusion and inequality."The main cause of undernutrition is not lack of food-production capacity, but access to food, Carcia said.Six countries, Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, have approved food security laws with nine more in the process of doing so. The laws are considered as a way to ensure that local agricultural products are primarily used to feed the countries' own populations and not used for export.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The uranium subsidiary of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group (CGNPG) has said it is developing two large mines in the mainland.The two mines will be located in south China's Guangdong province and northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, according to Saturday's China Daily.The move is likely to add as much as 1,000 tonnes to the country's annual production capacity of the nuclear fuel."The two mines are expected to start operation in 2013, each with an annual production capacity of no more than 500 tonnes," the newspaper quoted Zhou Zhenxing, chairman of CGNPG Uranium Resources Co (CGNPG-URC) as saying.

GENEVA, March 28 (Xinhua) -- The world is ill-prepared to respond to a severe influenza pandemic or to any similarly global, sustained, and threatening public health emergency, an independent expert-committee entrusted by World Health Organization (WHO) said at its fourth meeting here on Monday.The Review Committee, tasked to look into the experience gained in the global response to the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic in 2009, issued its preliminary report at the meeting.In the report, the Committee said, "global preparedness can be advanced through research, strengthened health-care delivery systems, economic development in low and middle-income countries and improved health status."It recommended that international society establish an extensive global public health reserve corps consisted of experts and public health professionals, which could be deployed to support countries in need, in case of future pandemics.Another suggestion was to create a contingency fund for public health emergencies to be held in trust at an institution such as the World Bank, in order to provide financial support during a declared public health emergency of international concern.The report also urged WHO member states to reach an agreement on sharing of viruses and access to vaccines, and encouraged them to run independent or cooperative influenza research program.WHO Director-General Margaret Chan said at the opening of the meeting that the report had offered "critical guidance to all ministers of health who need to make far-reaching decisions."She said the recommendations in the report would help to " improve the capacity of WHO and the international community to respond to public health emergencies" and therefore should be taken with "added urgency."In January 2010, WHO's Executive Board established a Review Committee, at Chan's proposal, to review the experience gained in response to the H1N1 pandemic, as well as the International Health Regulations and WHO's functioning in tackling the disease.The Committee is expected to prepare its final report out of the current preliminary version, and submit it to the decision- making body of WHO in May.
