ADDIS ABABA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Marking the World AIDS Day on Thursday at the African Union (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Jean Ping, the AU Commission chairperson, said Africa should no longer see new generations with HIV infection.Through his representative, Ping called upon individual and collective action to contain mother to child transmission of HIV."We should act individually and collectively not only to prevent mother to child transmission but also to take care of the health of people living with the virus," said the chairperson.He also expressed commitment of the AU Commission to work with member states and pertinent bodies in the efforts made to HIV treatment and prevention.The World AIDS Day is commemorated this year under the theme "Zero Mother to Child Transmission", as world leaders who were gathered in New York for the 2011 United Nations (UN) High Level Meeting on AIDS in June, launched a Global Plan for significant strides towards eliminating new HIV infection among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive.Remarkable progress has been made so far, which is proof to realize the vision of zero new HIV infection, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related death (the three zeros), said UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the message on the commemoration of the World AIDS Day.The secretary general revealed that the number of new infections has fallen by more than 20 percent since 1997, and new infections are continuing to decline in most parts of the world.In sub-Saharan Africa, the region most affected by the AIDS epidemic, HIV incidence has decreased in 22 countries, he said.According to UNAIDS, Ethiopia, Nigeria, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are among the African countries where new HIV infections dropped significantly."Treatment has averted 2.5 million AIDS-related deaths since 1985. Last year alone, 700,000 lives were saved. Some 6.6 million people, nearly half those who need treatment in low and middle- income countries, are now receiving it," said Ban."Synergies between prevention and treatment are speeding up progress. But, to end AIDS, we need to deliver even greater results," said the secretary general.The UNAIDS says to get to the three zeros there must be acceleration on smart investments, capitalizing on scientific advancements and respecting human rights.Speaking at the AU headquarters on the commemoration of AIDS Day, Jan Beagle, deputy executive director of UNAIDS, underlined on the need to invest smartly to achieve the vision of the three zeros.There is a global target of 22 million U. BEIJING/CHONGQING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A team of Chinese and American scientists have discovered the world's only evidence of co-existing human beings and dinosaur tracks in a remote county in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, according to a paper published Saturday in the Geological Bulletin of China, a Chinese core academic journal.Qijiang County's Lianhua Baozhai, which means "Lotus Mountain Fortress" in Chinese, has a large number of dinosaur tracks as well as a well-preserved fortress and historical epigraph, forming a direct line of evidence that ancient Chinese people built a residence and lived there for a long time, said Xing Lida, one of three researchers with the project as well as a doctoral degree candidate with the Department of Biological Sciences of the University of Alberta in Canada.Chinese people could have lived here for more than 700 years, and the mud cracks, ripple marks and duck-billed dinosaur tracks were considered by them to be lotus leaf veins, water environment and lotus, respectively, which is why they named it the Lotus Mountain Fortress, Xing Lida told Xinhua."Research shows that dinosaur tracks impacted ancient Chinese place names and folklore, so place names and folklore can be major clues for us in tracing dinosaur tracks," Xing said.According to the paper, the Lotus Mountain Fortress dinosaur tracks, the largest track group of cretaceous dinosaurs in southwestern China, contains 350 to 400 footprints that had been preserved in many ways, including concave footprints, convex footprints and multilayered footprints.

BEIJING, Sept. 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Even a slightly high blood pressure is considered dangerous to largely increase the stroke risk, a new study found.The finding was published Wednesday on the online edition of U.S. medical journal Neurology.In the study, researchers found people who have pre-hypertension, whose blood pressure measured between normal and high, are 55 percent more likely to suffer a stroke compared with normal people.The study involved data from 12 previous studies on blood pressure and stroke occurrence of some 500,000 adults.About one in three U.S. adults suffer from pre-hypertension, which is defined at a systolic blood pressure between 120 and 139 or a diastolic blood pressure between 80 and 89, according to the U.S. Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Treatment of High Blood Pressure."People who do fall into the higher range of pre-hypertension should modify their lifestyle as much as possible," suggested Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele, director of the Olive View-UCLA Stroke Program and leading author of the study.Stroke is the number three cause of death, killing more than 130,000 in the U.S. a year, according to a CBS report.

CAPE TOWN, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- More people voluntarily get HIV tests in the Western Cape province, an indication of people's rising awareness of the epidemic, authorities said on Thursday.Nearly 11,000 people in the province have been tested over the past 10 days as authorities stepped efforts to halve the number of HIV transmissions over the next few years, according to official figures.Authorities expect more people to be tested when the monthly campaign ends by the end of December.In December last year, 67,111 people were tested.This year's figure is expected to be higher than that of last year, said Western Cape Premier Helen Zille.The campaign, known as Know Your Status and Win, may become a regular feature in the province, said Zille.To encourage more people to take part in the campaign, the province offers awards to several winners by drawing, ranging from 10,000 rand (about 1,250 U.
