PAUMA VALLEY (CNS) - Authorities Saturday identified a man suspected of ambushing three sheriff's deputies at his home in a rural area near Casino Pauma and sparking an hours-long standoff late Thursday.Jose Nieto, a 28-year-old Pauma Valley man, was arrested for three counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and three counts of assault of a peace officer with a firearm, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Rich Williams said.Nieto was being held without bail, under guard at a local hospital while being treated for a gunshot wound he sustained during the standoff, and was expected to be arraigned this week.RELATED: Deputies shot at while responding to call in Pauma ValleyThe standoff began around 4:15 p.m. Thursday when deputies responded to a home in the 15600 block of Adams Drive in Pauma Valley after receiving a 911 call from a man who said he "needed help and didn't feel safe in his home." As three deputies approached the front door of the home, they were met with gunfire, Williams said.The deputies returned fire, established a perimeter around the home and called for backup, including a SWAT team.Nearby residents were evacuated from their homes and surrounding streets were shut down.Authorities spent hours trying to establish communication with the gunman, but when that was unsuccessful, the SWAT team entered the home and found the suspect inside with an apparent gunshot wound to his lower body, Williams said. PALA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A 5-year-old boy critically injured in Saturday’s deadly bus crash was airlifted to a Riverside County hospital Sunday, authorities said. The young boy was airlifted from Inland Valley Medical Center to the Riverside University Health System Medical Center in Moreno Valley to be treated for a head injury, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Latulippe said. The boy was among 21 passengers on a charter bus traveling to Tijuana from El Monte. The crash happened on Interstate 15 south of State Route 76. Three women were killed in the crash that left 18 others hospitalized. Five of those injured were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, five to Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar and eight to Temecula Valley Hospital, Latulippe said. The bus then continued down an embankment before landing on its roof, ejecting several passengers. A vehicle inspection report dated November 5, 2019, shows that, as of that date, the windshield wipers were either inoperative or defective. The same report shows that the vehicle had no spare fuses “as required.” A second report of the bus line revealed that 48 percent of vehicles in that particular safety group have better on-road performance. PALA, Calif. (KGTV) – An Oceanside woman is dead and a man and 11-year-old are hospitalized after a vehicle was found overturned on an embankment near State Route 76. The family of three, a father, mother and son, were traveling from Palomar Mountain back to their home in Oceanside.At about 6:13 a.m. Friday, California Highway Patrol received a call from San Diego Sheriff's Department about a vehicle that had veered off the roadway. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Oceanside, said he was unsure of his location and knocked unconscious in the crash, but that he was somewhere along SR-76 between Palomar Mountain and Oceanside. He also was not sure what time they went over the edge, but said they had been driving around 11 p.m. Thursday night, which means they could have been down there for close to eight hours. Both agencies dispatched crews to find the vehicle and using his cellphone location, were able to find the vehicle just after 6:30 a.m. south of SR-76 near Bodie Blvd. The vehicle, a Subaru carrying, was about 300 feet down a steep embankment near the roadway."He wasn’t even sure when the crash happened. He thought he left somewhere around 11 o’clock last night, heading home from Palomar Mountain to Oceanside, so he may have been out there all night," said CHP Public Information Officer Mark Latulippe.The right-front passenger, a 30-year-old woman, had died from her injuries in the crash. The driver sustained major injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center. An 11-year-old male who was in the right rear of the Subaru also received major injuries and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital.The driver and child are expected to recover.A small dog was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Animal control helped locate the dog after the crash.Investigators are not sure how long the vehicle had been there. They believe sometime overnight the Subaru was traveling on SR-76 near the Wilderness Gardens Preserve when for unknown reasons it left the roadway and overturned down the embankment. All three victims were ejected during the crash and found either partially or fully outside of the vehicle, CHP says.The names of those involved in the crash were not released. Investigators do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash and everyone is believed to have been wearing a seatbelt. 2342

PITTSBURGH - A US Postal Service employee is on leave after bags of undelivered mail were found on the side of the street for trash pick-up outside a home near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, according to multiple reports.Several bags were reported to the US Postal Service Office of Inspector General Sunday and they are investigating.An agent with the USPS OIG says the bags contained a variety of mail.“USPS OIG Special Agents recovered several different classes of mail, including business mail, flats, and small amount of first class mail. We expect to perform a piece count of the mail today, and make arrangements to have the mail delivered to customers as soon as feasible,” Special Agent Scott Balfour said in a statement released Tuesday.“Once USPS OIG special agents conclude their investigation, the case will be presented for federal prosecution to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.”A post office employee is on leave without pay in connection with this investigation.This is the second time in just the last week a mail person is under investigation for allegedly not delivering mail.According to WPXI, the other incident was caught on surveillance camera, showing a postal carrier dumping mail inside a garbage can. (KGTV) - A San Diego woman is demanding answers from Phoenix police after her uncle was shot to death by officers outside his apartment.This week, ABC10 News spoke to 18-year-old San Diegan Sadie Whitaker about her family's outrage surrounding the death of her 40-year-old uncle, Ryan Whitaker, who was shot by Phoenix police in May. It was captured on police body camera video that was just released.“I feel like this needs to be heard everywhere. It needs to be national news. It was just wrong,” said Sadie.Police said a concerned neighbor called in to report that Whitaker and his girlfriend may have been having a physical fight inside their Phoenix apartment.In the police body camera video, officers are heard knocking on the door and identifying themselves. Whitaker opens the door and appears to step out with a gun in his right hand which he then appears puts behind his back and lowers to the ground with his left hand visibly in the air. The encounter quickly escalates and shots are heard being fired.Police said the second officer in the video shot Whitaker, believing the first officer was in immediate danger. Whitaker did not fire, they report.Sadie tells ABC10 News that a few days before that, someone had knocked on their door but took off. “This night, when the same thing happened, he brought his gun to the door for protection,” Sadie added.She said his gun was legally purchased and he had no criminal history.After shots were fired, Whitaker's girlfriend appears to become hysterical. She’s heard asking why officers shot him. An officer is heard telling her that Whitaker had just pulled a gun on them. She responds that it’s dark and someone just knocked on the door.An officer is heard saying, “Your neighbor called saying he heard you guys going at it.” She responds, “Literally, we were making salsa and playing Crash Bandicoot so there may have been some screaming from PlayStation but it wasn't domestic violence or anything.”“I do not think [the shooting] was justified whatsoever,” said Sadie.Whitaker's family is calling for the officers to be terminated and face criminal prosecution.“I want there to be awareness and I want people to know that this kind of stuff is going on,” Sadie says.Phoenix Police told ABC10 News that they can’t comment because of pending litigation.
