SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A political kingmaker is using his fortune to shake up the San Diego race for District Attorney. The first television ads are hitting airwaves now, little more than a month before the election. The element of surprise surrounds the tone of an ad paid for by billionaire George Soros. He’s known for backing progressive candidates and shaking up elections, usually with controversial ads.The ad lays out Geneviéve Jones Wright’s qualifications to be San Diego County’s next District Attorney. It does not attack her opponent Summer Stephan, which is what most politicos expected.Jones Wright told 10News she had not seen the ad.Stephan’s campaign manager said he’s surprised the ad is more of an introduction than an attack. Jason Roe also said there is no doubt in his mind the gloves will come off, based on what he called Soros’ pattern of negative and dishonest ads.Jones Wright filed a complaint with the attorney general claiming Stephan was basically campaigning on the job and using photo ops with law enforcement in her campaign materials.Stephan’s campaign manager called it a distraction. 1128

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego boxer who missed out on the 2016 Olympic games has her eyes set on 2020.Danyelle Wolf missed out on the 2016 Olympic games because her weight class wasn't included. The omission forced her to seek out a new challenge: MMA.For the next three years, Wolf trained for her MMA debut. That day would never come either."I dislocated my shoulder, so I totally dislocated my arm, tore my labrum," Wolf said. RELATED: USD sophomore becomes first-ever American climber to qualify for OlympicsBut a funny thing happened after that. The International Olympic Committee voted to add Wolf's weight class to the 2020 games as she rehabed her shoulder injury. So just like that, it was back to the training room, but in this case time was a factor."Thank goodness, because it I would've fought professionally in MMA I would not have been able to try out for the Olympic games," Wolf said. "It wasn't fast for learning a whole new sport like MMA, but for the three years to pass for the Olympic trials right around the corner, it came fast."RELATED: Vista skatepark draws 2020 Olympic hopefulsAnd Wolf was ready, earning a spot when it came time to focus back to boxing."Had four fights, and I got all the wins to win round one of the Olympic trials and to qualify me for the Olympic finals," Wolf said. Now comes the qualifying finals, which Wolf will compete in this December."I think I'm the experienced fighter, mentally, physically. I think I'm going to have the advantage in all aspects of the game," Wolf said. 1537

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A plan to add bike lanes along 30th Street in North Park got a boost of support Tuesday from a group of 18 businesses.“We see protected lanes on 30th Street as just the beginning of the transformation of our streets to truly support biking, walking, and transit as meaningful transportation choices,” read the letter, which was sent to Mayor Kevin Faulconer and City Councilmember Chris Ward.It was signed by the owners of 18 local businesses located near 30th Street, including Modern Times Beer, Union Cowork, Waypoint Public and Bottlecraft. On Twitter, Modern Times Beer posted the letter, adding “Our world-class businesses deserve world-class streets. We urge the city to stand firm in its commitments to climate, safety, clean air, & thriving business corridors, & stick with Option A.” Here's an important thing we care a lot about: building more bike lanes. The City of San Diego is planning to build some badass bike lanes on 30th St, where our tasting room is located. This will involve replacing on-street car parking. We strongly support this plan— Modern Times Beer (@ModernTimesBeer) July 23, 2019 Option A would remove street parking along 30th Street from Howard Avenue to Juniper Street. The city estimates 258 parking spaces would be lost in the first stretch from Howard to Upas St. Another 162 parking spaces would also be lost in the second stretch from Upas to Juniper Street. The removal of the parking spaces would make room for protected bike lanes on both sides of the street and would preserve center turn lanes. That option has divided the community, however, with opposition coming from other businesses, residents and the North Park Main Street organization.“Why not meet in the middle?” said Angela Landsberg, executive director of North Park Main Street. She has been pushing the Mayor’s office for a plan known as “Option B.” That plan would create separate bike lanes but maintain some of the parking by creating “floating” parking spaces between the bike lane and vehicle traffic lanes. 2054

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A Lemon Grove man was charged Wednesday with aiming a laser pointer at a San Diego Police helicopter as a demonstration moved through Hillcrest last weekend.Rudy Alvarez, 24, was charged with aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft hovering over the protest on June 6, according to the Department of Justice.A federal complaint alleges Alvarez shined a laser at the SDPD aircraft at about 8:30 p.m. in the area of the 500 block of University Ave. During that time, a large demonstration was moving through the area, investigators added.Alvarez was located multiple times over the next hour in the crowd, before police identified him on G St. just before 10 p.m. and arrested him without incident.Detectives say they found a high-powered gray metal laser pointer in his front left pant pocket."Aiming a laser pointer at or near an aircraft could cause distraction or blindness to a pilot and the consequences could be devastating," said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. "We support the Constitutional rights of free speech and assembly, but it is our duty to protect the public and law enforcement from danger."Alvarez's bond was set at ,000 and his next hearing was set for June 23. 1205
