For the fourth time, Democrats in Wisconsin believe they have a chance to finally defeat Gov. Scott Walker and steer the state back to the left after eight years of Republican rule.First, though, the party will have to use Tuesday's primary to sort through its own crowded field of little-known candidates to find a nominee to oppose Walker.Tuesday's primaries in two key Upper Midwestern states -- Wisconsin and Minnesota -- will kick off Democrats' midterm push to capitalize on President Donald Trump's unpopularity and wrest back the dominant positions they once held in the states.The two states will join Ohio, Michigan and Illinois on the list of Midwestern battlegrounds with governor's offices on the ballot this fall that Democrats believe they can win.Walker, who frustrated Democrats in 2010, rolled back union rights in 2011, survived a 2012 recall election, and won again in 2014, looks vulnerable this year. A recent poll by NBC News/Marist found him trailing his potential challenger Tony Evers. He has warned Republicans repeatedly that the party faces an enthusiasm gap. And the progressive candidate's victory in a state Supreme Court election earlier this year buoyed the left's hopes there.In Wisconsin's wide-open Democratic gubernatorial primary, the leading candidate is Evers, who has been the state superintendent of public instruction since 2009.Polls have shown him with a lead of at least three-to-one. But the highest he's been in any recent public poll is 31% -- reflecting how little voters know about the vast field of potential Walker opponents.The two candidates who have received the most national attention are firefighter union president Mahlon Mitchell and former state Rep. Kelda Roys.Mitchell would become Wisconsin's first black governor. He's endorsed by California Sen. Kamala Harris, a potential 2020 presidential candidate. Another 2020 prospect -- New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand -- has endorsed Roys. She's also backed by EMILY's List, though the group, which backs Democratic women running for office, hasn't spent as heavily in Wisconsin as it has some other races this year.Five other candidates are in the race -- including state Sen. Former "NBC Nightly News" anchor Tom Brokaw was on the defensive on Thursday after Variety Magazine published an interview with a former NBC correspondent claiming Brokaw sexually harassed her. Linda Vester, an NBC reporter for a decade from 1989 to 1999, told Variety that Brokaw physically tried to force her to kiss him and groped her on NBC property. She also claimed that Brokaw showed up to her hotel room uninvited. Variety confirmed that two of Vester's friends were told about Brokaw's alleged behavior around the time of the incidents. In response to the allegations, Brokaw sent a statement through NBC to Variety stating, "I met with Linda Vester on two occasions, both at her request, 23 years ago because she wanted advice with respect to her career at NBC. The meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate, and despite Linda’s allegations, I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other.”There are also no other known claims of sexual harassment against Brokaw. Vester told Variety that recent events at NBC, including revelations of alleged sexual harassment involving ex-Today Show host Matt Lauer, have prompted her to speak out. Vester told Variety that the sexual advances began four years after she began her NBC career during Pope John Paul's 1993 visit to Denver. "I’m standing there, and Tom Brokaw enters through the door and grabs me from behind and proceeds to tickle me up and down my waist," she said. "I jumped a foot and I looked at a guy who was the senior editor of “Nightly,” and his jaw was hanging open. Nobody acted like anything wrong was happening, but I was humiliated. I didn’t know Brokaw other than to say hello in the hall."Vester said that she was also asked several times in 1994 to have drinks with Brokaw. Vester claimed that Brokaw also called her, saying he was coming over. Vester said that 30 minutes later, Brokaw was at her door. "He walked past me and sat down on the sofa in my suite," Vester told Variety. "He puts his arm on the back of the sofa and he said, 'I like our rat-a-tat-tat.' I thought it was a bizarre statement."Vester added, "I could feel myself trembling. As I stood there, I asked in a frustrated and scared tone, 'What do you want from me?' And he gave me a look of annoyance like he couldn’t believe I didn’t get it. He said, 'An affair of more than passing affection.'"Vester left NBC in 1999 to anchor a program for Fox News. Former Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke is being criticized on social media after making homophobic comments while referencing the "locker room talk" war of words between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. Biden told a Florida crowd Tuesday that he would "beat the hell out of Trump" if they were in high school and Trump made lewd comments recorded during an Access Hollywood interview several years ago.Trump clapped back Thursday, calling Biden "mentally and physically" weak, and tweeting that Biden would "go down fast and hard, crying all the way." In a Wednesday tweet, Clarke zeroed in on Biden's comment that he's been around a lot of locker rooms in his life, and stated "Please tell us why and what you were doing hanging around all those locker rooms, Joe? FORT MITCHELL, Ala. – A 5-year-old boy was struck and killed by a vehicle on a busy Alabama highway Sunday night after reportedly being forced out of a car as punishment.Russell County Sheriff Heath Taylor told WTVM that the boy, Austin Birdseye, was riding in the car with his mother’s boyfriend, 35-year-old Bryan Starr, when the child began “being unruly.”Taylor told CBS News that Starr had taken the boy on a drive that night to “calm him down” after he acted up at home.During the drive, Taylor says Starr pulled over, told Birdseye to get out of the vehicle and then lost sight of him in the rain. The boy ended up wandering onto Highway 165 in Fort Mitchell, where he was fatally hit, according to the sheriff.Starr was arrested on a murder charge, but he has since bonded out of jail, CBS reports. If convicted, he could reportedly face 20 years to life in prison.Taylor believes Starr made a horrible decision. He said he understands trying to discipline the child, but the way Starr did it was “mind-boggling.” He told CBS that it serves as a lesson to parents.“There's way to discipline your child, but we have to do it the right way and we can't do it in a way that's going to potentially bring harm," Taylor said.Starr is in the military, stationed at Fort Benning. For religious groups around the country, technology is helping them overcome the hurdles of the COVID-19 pandemic.Alma Gonzalez chokes up as she talks about her family and how they taught the importance of faith.“I was raised by my grandmother,” Alma Gonzalez said. “Very devout Catholic and very devoted to Our Lady, and she taught me how to pray.”It was Gonzalez’s upbringing that motivated her to take part in the annual pilgrimage in Palm Springs, California.“It was a miracle to finish it,” said Gonzalez.The 34-mile walk, in honor of the Virgin of Guadalupe, a patron saint of millions of Mexicans and Latinos, has brought together thousands in California for more than two decades.This year, organizers canceled their plans, but adapted to the current conditions.It was the first time in 15 years that Gonzalez did not participate, but she did honor the Virgin de Guadalupe from home.“I think the attitude that I’ve seen develop is we can’t do everything the way we did it before, but we will do whatever we can to keep the spirit alive and I really see that among the people,” said one religious leader.The mass in honor of the Virgin will be held with a limited number of parishioners while respecting social distancing guidelines.
