SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— The San Diego Police Department's Eastern Division opened up their “Trunk or Treat Haunted Station” to more than 500 kids the Skyline neighborhood. Officers and community members helped to transform the station, and students from Morse High School played monsters in the haunted house. The tradition began four years ago, with the goal of connecting the community with law enforcement.  “It’s so safe. It’s so fun. The kids are having a blast,” one woman said, as her cousin played with the police equipment on display.Outside the station, sponsors gave out candy and snow cones. Officers allowed Trick-Or-Treaters to tour the inside of a SWAT vehicle and ride a police motorcycle. “When I was a child, we didn’t have a place like this to come to,” one woman said, as her grandchildren played inside the SWAT vehicle. “As I was growing up, they would say 'Don’t eat the candy. Things are unsafe.' But we’re so glad to be here because we know our kids are safe here.”Residents said this was exactly what the community needed-- An experience that not only keeps the streets safe, but builds good relationships between residents and law enforcement. “A lot of the kids said, 'I want to be a police officer when I grow up.' SAN DIEGO, Calif (KGTV) - In an effort to calm people's fears about new streetlights equipped with cameras and sensors, the City of San Diego will hold a public forum Wednesday night to answer questions and explain what the new technology does, and does not do.The meeting is from 5:30 to 7 pm, at the Malcom X Library on 5148 Market Street.Over the last two years, the city has installed more than 3,000 new streetlights that have "Smart City" technology built into them. The footage from the cameras isn't accessible to the public, and the cameras are not for surveillance. Also, the footage will only be stored on the camera for 5 days and then deleted.Police may only ask for footage after a crime is committed, and only as part of an investigation. According to the city, the footage has already been used to help SDPD solve a handful of crimes.Hooven also says the cameras will use GPS technology to ensure they only get footage of public spaces, and not areas that are expected to be private. The system uses a process called "curtilage" to blur any areas that shouldn't be shown.Hooven says the city is ready to answer any other questions people have about the new lights at Wednesday's meeting."Technology is coming and we're trying to embrace it to provide a lot of benefits to the city and save us money," she says. SAN DiEGO (KGTV) - Police deployed tasers to arrest a man following a road rage outburst that got out of control Wednesday evening.Police identified the man as 33-year-old Jason Berard. He was driving a silver SUV that backed into a white pickup truck near Park Boulevard and Howard Avenue in the University Heights neighborhood.  According to the driver of the pickup, they pulled over into a Chevron. The driver of the pickup truck thought they were going to exchange insurance information, but instead, Berard was confrontational.  According to witnesses, Berard punched the other driver before ripping away the man’s cell phone and throwing it on the ground, smashing it.A gas station employee called the police.  After police responded and made contact, police say Berard assaulted an officer. That’s when another officer came to help and fell to the ground during the struggle.Police say Berard took off on foot and got about a block down Howard Avenue but was taken down after an officer using their taser.Berard could be facing battery charges on an officer as well as resisting arrest. 1122

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV)— With precipitation numbers up, participation numbers were down for outdoor events around San Diego County. But many who chose to endure the rain said it was worth the extra splash. It’s a rare sight in the heart of San Diego: kids sledding on a giant snowy hill at Montgomery Waller Park. For the Murillo family, it’s an annual tradition. “We go to see Santa Claus, we go to the little stores that they have there, and we come to sled down for a little bit,” mother Diane Murillo said. She and her children were bundled up while having fun at San Diego Snow Day. But this year, Murillo noticed that the crowds were much smaller. “It’s a lot smaller. It’s empty today. There’s actually parking,” Murillo laughed. She said the steady rain discouraged many folks from showing up. The City of San Diego even had to cancel Santa Claus’ helicopter fly-over of the park, due to inclement weather. Murillo also noticed that the snowy hill was very sludgy, and only about half its normal length. But by the looks of the children, the event was still worth it. Meanwhile, in the South Bay, there was a tent full of Christmas-themed games. From Candy Cane trees, ring tosses, to face paint, families enjoyed the free entertainment at the Chula Vista Children’s Faire. “It helps, because that way, we’re not getting wet while they are getting their stuff done and doing the activities. So it’s nice,” mother Felice Navarro said. Her neighbor invited her and her children to join them at the fair this year. The kids also had an option to splash around if they wanted, as they ran through an obstacle course as Chula Vista junior firefighters. Fun was not just reserved for children. Up at Liberty Station, hundreds of people waited in line to join the San Diego BBQ and Beer festival. 25-year-old Victoria Ransom was not going to let the rain dampen her birthday celebration. “We wanted to be able to double fist if that was a possibility. Hands-free rain protection,” Ransom joked. She said she bought eight rainbow-colored umbrella hats online, the moment she found out about the weather. “You drink, you eat, it’s great,” Ransom said. “I got a nice pour because it’s my birthday, and we’re having a great time.” 2243
