CHULA VISTA (CNS) - Two drivers were arrested at a checkpoint for driving under the influence of alcohol and one driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant, authorities said today.The checkpoint was set up in the 600 block of Palomar Street between 7 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Officer Oscar Miranda of the Chula Vista Police Department.Of the 1,118 vehicles traveling through the checkpoint, 406 were screened and six drivers were given sobriety tests, Miranda said.Officers issued 12 citations to drivers who were unlicensed or had a suspended license, Miranda said. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of neighbors in Eastlake are using social media to support each other during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jason Anderson created the Facebook page called 'Eastlake - Support COVID-19'. He got the idea after seeing another post on social media. He initially created the group to make sure children staying home from school wouldn't go hungry. The group is now being used for community members to find things like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and food. Nothing on the group is for sale, Anderson says neighbors are just helping each other by paying it forward. The group has grown to over 800 members in just three days. The leaders of the group are hosting regular conference calls to plan and stay organized. The group is now brainstorming how to best help elderly members in the community since they might not be as social media savvy. (KGTV) -- A man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police said he broke into a Chula Vista woman's home and took a shower.At around 4:30 a.m., a resident called 911 to report a stranger in her home using her shower, prompting her to flee. She said the man she did not know somehow entered her home as she slept.When officers arrived at the home on Orange Avenue, they called on the man to come out of the house, but he refused to leave and locked himself inside the bathroom.After about an hour, officers entered the house through a window and were able to take the man into custody.The unidentified man was taken to jail, but there is no immediate word on what charges he faces. 715

(KGTV) - A South Bay public official is doubling down on anti-Muslim comments as he prepares a campaign to become Chula Vista's mayor.Hector Gastelum resisted calls to resign from the Otay District Water Board in 2017 after his tweets referred to Muslims as sub-human scum. He just qualified for the June run-off to become the Mayor of Chula Vista, the county's second largest city.In an interview, Gastelum said he isn't backing down from his prior controversial comments. "How can you not condemn rape? How can you not condemn pedophilia? Or throwing gays from the roof," Gastelum said, clarifying he is not referring to all Muslims. "If people don't like what I stand for, they can vote for the person that's going to take more taxes from them."Hanif Mohebi, who runs the San Diego chapter of the Council of American Islamic Relations, called Gastelum's comments bigoted and hateful."Are we referring to other criminals by their religion?" he said.
