Los Angeles leaders have voted to slash the Police Department budget by 0 million. The City Council approved the change Wednesday that will reduce the number of LAPD officers to a level not seen for more than a decade and provide services and programs for communities of color. It comes amid nationwide demands to shift money away from law enforcement agencies during America’s reckoning over police brutality and racial injustice. Other cities around the country also have cut police budgets or are moving to do so. New York City lawmakers shifted billion from policing to education and social services in the coming year.Minneapolis, the site of George Floyd's death on Memorial Day, previously voted to disband the city's police department. Both President Donald Trump and his opponent this November Joe Biden have stated they're opposed to defunding police departments. 888

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - As the use of legal and illegal fireworks around the Los Angeles area exploded this Fourth of July, fire departments saw a sharp increase in the number of calls for service, authorities said Sunday. It was the second-busiest day ever in calls for service from the Los Angeles County Fire Department, according to Dispatch Supervisor Imy McBride. The dispatchers usually field 1,000 calls on an average day, McBride said. On July 4th, they handled more than 1,600 calls, including tree, brush and roof fires.Los Angeles City firefighters responded to 1,770 calls for service from 3 a.m. July 4 to 3 a.m. Sunday, spokesman Nicholas Prange said. The department averaged 1,368 calls per day during the same period in 2019, he said. The July 4 fires included one that burned trees and the roof of a garden-style apartment building on Wilbur Avenue in Northridge with five people suffering smoke inhalation and 50 residents being displaced, Prange said. There was also a three-acre brush fire in Shadow Hills and a fire that spread from palm trees to the roof of an apartment building in Reseda.McBride and Prange said it was unclear whether the fires were related to the increase use of fireworks. 1216

Alec Baldwin returned to play Trump before the president's COVID diagnosis, while Jim Carrey made his feature debut as Biden. Rock hosted the show in front of a live audience, which included about two dozen first responders who wore masks. 755

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A judge in California has ordered immediate testing of all detainees and staff at an immigration detention center where COVID-19 was spreading for weeks while officials refused to test for the virus. The Los Angeles Times reports federal District Court Judge Vince Chhabria ordered the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to conduct quick-result testing of everyone in the Mesa Verde ICE Processing Facility in Bakersfield. Chhabria’s order followed results Friday showing nearly half of the detainees tested earlier in the week were positive. A public defender says initial results from quick tests Saturday found 11 more positive cases. 677

LONG ISLAND — Mini horses visited health care workers at Katz Women’s Hospital on Long Island as an expression of gratitude toward the overtaxed medical staff.HorseAbility, a Long Island organization, brought the horses to the hospital for the visit on world gratitude day.Normally, the horses work with people with special needs, but the team at HorseAbility felt health care workers battling COVID-19 could use some time with the horses.“They say there are so many benefits in pet therapy, it doesn’t matter what the animal is the result is the same, it’s a reduction in stress,” said Michael Goldberg, Executive Director at Long Island Jewish Medical Center.Employees became emotional, sharing how the calmness of the horses was reminding them to remain calm. This story originally reported by Keith Lopez on PIX11.com. 830
