BEIJING, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The quality of China's agricultural produce including vegetables, domestic animals and aquatics was improved in 2009, the Ministry of Agriculture said Monday.The ministry released an annual report based on monitoring results of agricultural products, saying 96.4 percent of vegetables had met safety standards in 2009, up 0.1 percentage points year on year.The rate was 99.5 percent for domestic animals, up 0.8 percentage points, and 97.2 percent for aquatic products, up 1.5 percentage points.The monitoring of fruits, mushrooms and tea, for the first time in 2009, found 98 percent, 95.2 percent, and 94.8 percent of products in the three categories met standards.In 2009, the inspections became more detailed, covered more categories, and were carried out in 259 large and medium-sized cities, compared with only 36 major cities previously, the ministry said.The ministry said it would step up the control over the use of prohibited pesticides and veterinary drugs in 2010 in order to further improve the quality and safety of agricultural produce.

TIANJIN, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The construction of a new express railway section between two cities near Beijing was kicked off Sunday, which, when completed, is expected to further speed up economic integration around the Chinese capital.The 158-km-long railway linking coastal Tianjin and Baoding in Hebei Province will shorten the journey between the two cities to less than an hour.The project is part of the railway network that covers Beijing, Tianjin and cities in Hebei."The network will serve as an important impetus for the integration of the cities around Beijing," said Wang Ailan, a researcher with the Tianjin Academy of Social Sciences.An express railway between Beijing and Tianjin was put into operation in August 2008, shortening the 120-km journey between the two municipalities to only 30 minutes from the previous 74 minutes at least.The intercity railway network is centered at Beijing and Tianjin, and all the cities covered by the network, including Hebei provincial capital Shijiazhuang and coastal Qinhuangdao, can reach each other within two hours' rail ride, according to the plan .With an investment of 24 billion yuan (about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars) and a designed speed of 250 km per hour, the section between Tianjin and Baoding will serve both passenger and freight trains.The railway between Tianjin and Qinhuangdao, which is under construction, boasts a designed speed of 350 km per hour and will cut the trip between the two cities to 50 minutes when completed. Currently, the fastest train journey between the two port cities is about two hours.A high-speed passenger rail between Beijing and Shijiazhuang is also under construction. By 2012, 11 cities in Hebei will be covered by high-speed rails, and by 2020, the intercity railways between Beijing, Tianjin and cities in Hebei will reach 710 kilometers.

ABU DHABI, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- The 2010 World Expo, slated for May 1 to Oct. 31 in the eastern Chinese city of Shanghai, will provide an opportunity for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and China to enhance their mutual understanding, officials said Wednesday.The UAE is the first country to complete the "base-build" of its own pavilion at the Expo, with the exception of China's national pavilion, the state news agency WAM reported.The UAE pavilion will carry the Gulf nation's message to the people of China and many other countries, Saqr Ghobash, chairman of the National Media Council that is coordinating the project, was quoted as saying."We are particularly focused on the theme of Expo 2010 -- ' Better City Better Life' -- because we recognize that this resonates very deeply with the UAE's own experience," he said.Ghobash added that the UAE government and people have made huge strides towards creating a modern society that respects its past whilst embracing the present."We have much to share with our friends and partners in other countries. NAIROBI, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Somali pirates have released a fishing boat from Taiwan, China, and all of its crew held since April, a regional maritime official said Thursday."The Taiwanese ship was released this morning. The fishing vessel which has a crew of 30 from various Asian nationalities was seized in April last year," Andrew Mwangura, East Africa's coordinator of the Africa Seafarers Assistance Program, told Xinhua.The Win Far 161 was seized last April 4 near an island in the Seychelles, more than 1,100 kilometers off the coast of Somalia.The ship carried a crew of 30 -- 17 Filipinos, six Indonesians, five from the Chinese Mainland and two from Taiwan, China.Mwangura said 27 crew members were said to be safe, though a Chinese sailor and two from Indonesia died in captivity.The coordinator could not confirm whether a ransom was paid to secure the release of the 700-ton ship and crew.Piracy has been rampant off Somalia since the country slid into chaos after warlords toppled military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991.Somali pirates now hold at least seven ships and more than 160 crew members.The hijackings have prompted the international community to deploy security forces in the area to deter the pirates.

BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhua) -- The amendment to the Electoral Law adopted by the National People's Congress (NPC), China's parliament, marked an important step to improve the people's congress system and advance socialist democracy, the People's Daily said in an editorial to be published Monday.The NPC concluded its annual session here Sunday after adopting an amendment to the Electoral Law, which grants equal representation in legislative bodies to rural and urban people.The amendment could better demonstrate equality among people, regions and ethnic groups, and promote social harmony, the editorial said.The editorial also spoke highly of the NPC session as an important meeting in the crucial era for China to deal with the global financial crisis, maintain steady and relatively fast economic development, and accelerate transformation of the economic growth mode.The NPC endorsed the government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao, which highlights scientific development, transformation of the economic growth mode, innovation and improvement of people's livelihood, the editorial said.The editorial hailed the achievements of the NPC Standing Committee in 2009 and called for the NPC to make intensified efforts in legislation and supervision work and keep in closer contact with the people in 2010, the last year for the implementation of the country's 11th five-year plan (2006-2010).
