KINGS MILLS, Ohio - Patrick Farrell has a very full heart, but he was running on empty Sunday afternoon.The Kings Mills man was straining to finish a 100-mile run to raise money for orphans on the other side of the globe.Farrell took only short breaks for fuel and to change shoes. His first pair had sheet metal screws on the bottom."Because there was snow on the ground (Saturday),” he explained after his grueling 30-hour endeavor.You could say Farrell had his heart in it all the way. “I decided to blend my passion for running and helping orphans,” he said.Farrell said he did it for six girls at an orphanage in Nepal who are not available for U.S. adoption.“There's a non-profit organization called Love Does and they're always looking for people to do fundraisers to provide financial support for the orphanage,” Farrell said.It’s a cause that close to Farrell's heart because he and his wife Susan adopted their four youngest kids from China.The Farrells said they got the idea after their only biological child, Karrie, noticed families who had adopted Chinese children. Karrie did her own research and started asking her parents to adopt, too.The Farrells’ kids know the importance of helping orphans, so they encouraged their dad on his run through their neighborhood.“I'm just so glad I'm not doing it,” said Caitlin, the Farrells’ first adopted child.Farrell said he went through three pairs of shoes running on trails and concrete. Other took turns running with him.Susan kept her husband fed and hydrated as best she could, but she could see him slipping as the miles and hours took their toll.“He really did great for probably the first 70 miles, but then as evening set in and the cold and the weariness, he hit a wall bigger than I've ever seen before,” Susan said.“I experienced sleep deprivation at a number of points,” Patrick said. “There's times when you just want to go inside and put your head down on a pillow and go to sleep.”But the people running with him and encouraging pulled him through, Susan said.“I really feel like the friends that came and helped him all through the night were a big key. I don't know if he could've done it without them,” she said.This was the second time Farrell has run 100 miles to raise money for the orphanage. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple who met at a Japanese internment camp during World War II, has died this month. The wife succumbed to effects from the coronavirus.To Garrett Yamada, Elizabeth and Joseph were just mom and dad. "My dad loved fish 'n chips and spam, and my mom was into sushi and fine dining," Yamada laughed. But on May 11, Joseph Yamada died after a long battle with dementia. Nine days later, COVID-19 took Elizabeth. They were both 90 years old. "I miss them, but I'm proud of the life they lived," Yamada said. Through struggle and strife, the Yamadas became a prominent San Diego couple. Joseph was a world-renowned landscape architect whose projects included designs for Sea World, UC San Diego, and the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center. Elizabeth was an English teacher who later became a partner at her husband's firm. "They were a wonderful team together," Yamada said.But their love story began behind bars at Poston Japanese Internment Camp in Arizona. Last May, Elizabeth Kikuchi-Yamada shared her story with 10News about her move to the camp as a 12-year-old girl. During her time there, she wrote letters to respected San Diego city librarian, Clara Breed.Breed fought racial injustice by sending books, trinkets, and hope to children locked up in camp. "Clara cared about helping young people know that there was freedom beyond imprisonment. Freedom of the mind to grow. Freedom of the heart to deepen," Elizabeth Yamada said in 2019. It was a story she shared for decades until the virus suddenly took over. "The tragedy with COVID is it separates you physically," her son said. "But her mind was sharp until the very end."The Yamada's were born two days apart in 1930 and died nine days apart in 2020. They were a loving couple, inseparable, both in life and death. KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Music teacher Matt Ketteman's classroom at Longview Farm Elementary may feel a little different now — quieter, with fewer kids and more protocols. But his mission to spread joy is as loud as ever."'Cause if there's anything we all need a little bit of right now, it's a little bit of fun," Ketteman said.When Ketteman won Teacher of the Year for the Lee's Summit R-7 School District, it also looked a little different. He found out while at home alone on a Zoom call.Ketteman also earned recognition as one of seven finalists for the Missouri Teacher of the Year award. He had previously been named one of 15 semi-finalists.Usually, as Teacher of the Year, he'd make a speech at the annual teacher's convocation, but that wasn't possible this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, he knew he had to do something special.He called up his colleagues and fellow members of a fun musical group, the LSR5 Band, for help."Hey, what do you guys think about putting a video together to bring everyone together in a digital way that is fun and exciting?" Ketteman asked them.They all agreed. And they did not disappoint.They created a music video using the song "Break My Stride," but changed the lyrics around a bit to reflect what's going on today with COVID-19 and schools.The teachers dressed up in full '80s attire and wigs. They recorded each of their musical pieces on a green screen and another colleague edited it all together.Ketteman's wife, Kim, makes an appearance in the video, too.They sing, "Teaching today is just the strangest scene. A virus called corona kept us all working from home-a. So here's my tip to help your year start clean. When you're facing challenges that are unforeseen just say, ain't nothing gonna break my stride, nobody gonna slow me down, oh no, I got to keep on moving.""So that's what I focused on, just being positive and sending those encouraging, uh, dance moves out into the community," Ketteman said.The video has been shared all around the district, the state, and the country."He has a lot of enthusiasm and a passion for teaching and so it sparked that and ignited that passion in everybody else as we got ready," Longview Farm Principal Kim Hassler said.Ketteman has been teaching for 17 years. Right now, he teaches kindergarten through third-grade students in-person. Students in fourth through sixth grades are learning from home, but he helps them learn songs and how to keep rhythm by using their hands, or they make their own instruments.His classroom is full of instruments on the floor and walls, along with fun learning stations. JASPER, Tenn. — The mountains of southeastern Tennessee soar into the sky as the Tennessee River winds through valleys. Yet, the beautiful landscape isn't just the site of a natural divide — it is the site of a digital one as well."The issue came when we had to go total shutdown, total remote," said Allen Pratt, who heads up the National Rural Education Association, representing rural school districts in all 50 states.He said when the pandemic forced students into remote learning, many in rural areas couldn't get on the internet."I think you have to look at it from the sense of, we have to treat this just like the electric power grid, where every home has electricity — it needs to be the same way with connectivity," Pratt said.The Pew Research Center found that more than a quarter of all Americans — 27% — don't have high-speed internet access at home. In terms of students, 9 million schoolchildren are not able to do remote learning at home, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.In Marion County, Tennessee, about 30% of the county's 4,000 students did not have internet access when the pandemic began. Director of Schools Mark Griffith said they relied on hand-delivering paper lesson packets."We would actually take some food and some of the packets out to the rural areas daily," Griffith said.In order to address the problem, the district set up several mobile hotspots throughout the county, including in the parking lots of some of their schools and the school district office. The hotspots seemed to help, as it reduced the number of students without internet access to below 20%.Yet, the district knows it can't reach everyone. This fall, instead of relying solely on internet access, teachers will save recordings of class lessons onto flash drives and hand them out to students who don't have internet access."They will be able to pick up that recording," Griffith said. "They will be a week behind, but we understand that."It's a short-term solution to a long-term problem that Allen Pratt believes will need major funding from federal and state governments to fix."Our school systems need to help, obviously, and be a part of it, but they shouldn't be in the business of providing broadband," Pratt said.
