This season, there have been 32 deaths in the county related to the flu, compared to 24 deaths at this time last season. The county says 2,292 local lab-confirmed cases were also reported last week. In comparison, only 487 confirmed cases were reported during the same week last year. This season's to-date total sits at 9,919 cases, passing the 9,655 cases reported all of last season.RELATED: Influenza B causing high number of pediatric flu deaths this season“The number of deaths and cases being reported are a sign that influenza is not easing up,” said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. “Vaccination is the best defense we have against the flu. People who have not gotten immunized should do it now.”County medical experts recommend residents protect themselves against the virus by frequently washing their hands, cleaning commonly touched surfaces and avoiding contact with sick people. The flu vaccine is available at local doctors' offices, pharmacies, and public health centers. A list of locations offering flu shots can be found on the county's immunization website or by calling 211 for the county's health hotline.Local health officials and the CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older receive a vaccine, especially those at higher risk of complications from the flu such as pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions, and locals 65 or older. 1712

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Another child has been diagnosed with E. Coli linked to animals at the San Diego County Fair, San Diego Health and Human Services officials reported Tuesday. The latest case involves a 6-year-old boy who visited animals at the fair on June 22, officials said. The boy began showing symptoms of Shiga-toxin-producing E. Coli (STEC) four days later. He was not hospitalized. 2-year-old Jedediah Cabezuela died of the illness and three other children were sickened by E. Coli, fair organizers said Friday.RELATED: Family mourns toddler dead after E. Coli exposure at San Diego County FairHealth officials confirmed Tuesday a previously reported case involving a 9-year-old child who was not hospitalized was due to E. Coli. “As we continue our investigation, more cases are likely to be reported,” said Wilma J. Wooten, M.D., M.P.H, County public health officer. “This is typical of any public health investigation. Since we asked doctors to be on the lookout for STEC, they are more likely to test patients exhibiting symptoms.” E. Coli can incubate over a period of 10 days. Fair officials closed the animal exhibits to the public on June 28. RELATED: Two-year-old boy dead, three sickened due to E. Coli linked to San Diego County FairSymptoms of E. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Approximately 900,000 San Diegans who pay for sewer services may have had their rights violated. It’s part of what being alleged in a massive new class action lawsuit against the City of San Diego, its Public Utilities Department and the San Diego City Council. The suit calls it an “illegal financing scheme”. Attorneys who brought the suit claim the issue surrounds the city’s million smart water meter system and how it was paid for.  The lawsuit alleges the city knowingly used about million from the city's sewer fund instead of the city's water fund to help pay for that meter system.Subsequently, hundreds of thousands of San Diego sewer ratepayers were allegedly misinformed about what their money was being used for. Attorneys argue sewer ratepayers were quite possibly paying for a system that they did not necessarily benefit from- the smart water meter system. It’s still unknown whether there were any rate hikes directly tied to this. The suit claims the situation was an unconstitutional grab of million in funds. The San Diego City Attorney’s Office is reviewing the complaint and will respond through the court. 1183

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children's minds cam become overwhelmed during the chaos of a pandemic. However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. "That just looks at the tip of the iceberg, and is a band-aid."They believe in the power of exercise, with workouts such as jump rope, balance beam, and planks just to give a few examples."It's fantastic for the brain, but the type of exercise we do here is very intentional. It works on very specific areas of the brain, but especially the connections between the different regions which are connected with development, processing, learning, and every day functioning."Many families are now seeing their kids struggle, as they deal with the pandemic and distance learning. "It's just been difficult," says the father of twin girls going through the Brain Balance program. "It's been nice because Brain Balance has been there, with emails as well as checking in with phone calls. But now having schools start with the distance learning, it's going to be hard to gauge them, but I can see they've gained."So what are the red flags to look for in your children? Lee says there are a few. "Are they able to really focus on the lesson at hand, and what about reading? A lot of kids are really struggling with getting through a paragraph or a sentence."Lee also says Brain Balance is by no means a cure, just a stepping stone to help children with their struggles."We know there are these road blocks in the brain. So we help them clear those road blocks, and to help them truly thrive, especially in the new school year." 2024
