(CNN) -- Two suspects escaped from a Northern California jail early Sunday, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office said.Santos Samuel Fonseca, 21, and Jonathan Salazar, 20, were being held in the Monterey County Adult Detention Facility awaiting trial on unrelated murder charges, the sheriff's office in a message on Facebook. The two face other felonies, authorities said.The sheriff's office didn't say how the men escaped, but they said the means of escape is under investigation.The pair had been in custody since 2018. (KGTV) - A former Veterans of Foreign Wars official is in custody in Bakersfield on suspicion of sex crimes which alleged victims say started in San Diego. Timothy Machin, 51, was arrested on July 2 and is currently being held on ,000,000 bail. The VFW confirmed to Scripps affiliate KERO that Machin was the commander of VFW Post 97 in Bakersfield. According to the police report, one person estimated that Machin had sex with her "almost 1,700 times." There are also multiple victims, according to the report. Child Protetctive Services was called by one of the alleged victims on July 1. CPS contacted Bakersfield Police on the same day to report the allegations. One alleged victim told Bakersfield Police that Machin forced her to perform oral sex on him during some of the encounters. The same person someone walked into the room one time when Machin was having sex with her. The alleged victim said Machin and the other person argued, but nothing happened beyond the argument, according to the documents. The accusers told investigators that the abuse started when Machin lived in San Diego. Machin moved to Bakersfield from San Diego in 2009. One alleged victim told police she didn't come forward sooner because previous reports of abuse went unheeded and she thought reporting the "incident would be meaningless." Machin resigned the position of commander July 10, according to Wayne Wright, who has taken over command of the post. He added that Machin is still a member of the VFW Post. Wright declined to comment on the allegations because it is an active investigation. Wright said the commander position is the top-ranking official at a VFW Post. Machin was arraigned on Friday, July 5, and pleaded not guilty. He's been charged with two counts of incest and three counts of lewd or lascivious acts with a child under the age of 14. (KGTV) — A 5.5-magnitude earthquake was reported near the Ridgecrest area late Wednesday.The quake occurred at about 6:30 p.m. in the Searles Valley area, about 14 miles outside of Ridgecrest, Calif., according to the USGS. Several smaller earthquakes measuring between 2.6 and 2.9 magnitude in the nearby Trona, Calif., area were recorded after the initial shakeup. A 4.2 magnitude aftershock was also felt in the area around 8 p.m. Wednesday night. No injuries or major damage were initially reported.According to the USGS' "Did You Feel It?" map, no San Diego County responses were immediately submitted.The last major earthquakes to hit near Ridgecrest occurred on July 4 and 5, 2019, when 6.4- and 7.1-magnitude earthquakes jostled the region. 756

Passenger Kate Buss, who was reported as heading for San Diego to marry her fiance, penned the letter more than 106 years ago.The letter dated April 10, 1912, remains in surprisingly great condition and gives readers a glimpse into life on the famed ship.In it, Buss writes to her brother, Percy, about her time on the Titanic, how she had experienced "no sign of sea sickness" yet, the unfortunate smell of fresh paint, and the "magnificent" sight of the ship's first-class apartments: 767

(KGTV) - A NASA astronaut with a special tie to San Diego is preparing for her trip to the International Space Station. Wednesday morning, 10News Anchor Jim Patton spoke to Dr. Jessica Meir, who earned her Doctorate in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She’ll be taking her first space flight as part of the next crew going to the ISS. "There is definitely a Scripps Institution of Oceanography flag as well as some other items from San Diego," said Astronaut Jessica Meir, speaking from Star City, Russia, where she's been training for the past year and half. She'll be applying her scientific skills to a myriad of experiments some 250 miles above the earth. "We will be on board for about six months,” said Meir. “That's the average length of a space station mission these days. And we will be conducting all kinds of scientific investigations, ranging from how our blood vessels and arteries are actually thickening and stiffening in response to the spaceflight environment. And how it affects all of our physiological systems." Meir says the research is part of the quest to send humans to Mars. Much of the work is at the leading edge of science but some is as practical as your kitchen. "Do we have a progress for trash?" Meir can be seen asking a fellow crew member as they train on a mock-up of the space station. "Where do you think we're keeping trash right now?" While very down to earth, Meir says all the training is very necessary. "When we have anything that breaks, like a toilet or need to change a light bulb, we can't call a plumber or electrician. We have to do all that stuff ourselves as well." Of course, all of this amid a little background fact: it requires the guts to blast-off from the comforts of Earth into the ultimate hostile environment of space. "How do you have the courage inside to do something like that,” asked Patton. "I think the biggest answer is the amazing training here on the ground," answered Meir. "The teams in Houston, all over NASA, and here in Russia as well. They prepare us for any situation." Jessica Meir and her crew are scheduled to take off from Russia on Sept. 25.
