BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing.From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates.The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest.They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial.At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform.The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.

HANGZHOU, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm Meranti hit east China's Zhejiang Province at 7 p.m. Friday after leaving the neighboring province of Fujian where about 150,000 people were evacuated, said local authorities.Typhoon Meranti weakened to a tropical storm at 2 p.m. in Fujian Province, and then to a tropical depression at 8 p.m. in Zhejiang.The tropical depression was tracked as it passed through Lishui City of Zhejiang at 8 p.m., with a wind speed of 54 km per hour near its center, according to Zhejiang provincial flood control authorities.The storm is moving northeastward at 20 km per hour, and may leave Zhejiang Saturday morning or further weaken, according to the Zhejiang meteorological center.Photo taken on Sept. 10, 2010 shows high waves hitting a port in Pinghai Town of Putian, southeast China's Fujian Province, Sept. 10, 2010. TOKYO, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Tuesday that he will try hard to rebuild a "strategic, mutually beneficial relationship" with China.During a luncheon meeting at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan, Maehara said he will strive to mend ties with China as foreign minister.He also welcomed the agreement between Prime Minister Naoto Kan and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Belgium Monday to resume talks between high-level officials of the two countries.Earlier in the day Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku expressed his hope for the improvement of Japan's relations with China."Promoting a strategic, mutually beneficial relationship and improving ties between Japan and China will be positive not only for the two countries but also for other Asian countries or countries around the world, especially for their economies," said Sengoku at a regular press conference in Tokyo.China-Japan relations have been soured recently after the Japanese Coast Guard illegally seized a Chinese fishing boat and detained the crew on Sept. 8 in waters off the Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea.Japanese authorities insisted on performing a so-called domestic judicial procedure against the crew despite strong protests from the Chinese government and public. TOKYO, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- Visiting China's special representative on Korean Peninsula affairs Wu Dawei said Tuesday that Beijing plans to put forward fresh measures to resume the stalled six-party talks at an early date.Wu made the comment to reporters after meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, but he did not elaborate on what measures China will propose to bring Pyongyang back to the negotiation, which have been suspended since December 2009.Wu, who chairs the six-party talks involving Democratic People' s Republic of Korea and South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the United States, said China needs to discuss the proposal with these member states and wants to hear their views about it.The Chinese envoy held talks with Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku after meeting with Okada.The Japanese side agreed with China that the stability and peace of the Korean Peninsula are in the interest of all parties concerned, and vowed to continue push forward the six-party talks. Both sides said they will work to restart the stalled negotiation as soon as possible.Wu arrived in Tokyo on Saturday for a four-day visit to Japan after visiting Pyongyang and Seoul.
