(CNN) -- Sugar might be falling out of favor, but it's the centerpiece of a makeover of Krispy Kreme that includes a new menu and its first store redesign in a decade.The doughnut company, founded 82 years ago, debuted a new location Tuesday in North Carolina that showcases Krispy Kreme's new, extra-sweet menu. It features concoctions like doughnut-infused ice cream, milkshakes and a customizable toppings bar for the glazed doughnuts.The makeover follows rival Dunkin's debut of a modernized store and new menu items, like breakfast bowls, in a bid to attract more people. The expansion has worked and sales jumped 2.4% for the first quarter of this year.The new Krispy Kreme store, which is a half hour east of Charlotte, is framed with a "stylistic wink" to its logo on the exterior. The interior has digital menu boards and an "enhanced doughnut theater experience" that shows how the doughnuts are made and glazed on a conveyer belt.The menu is revamped. One of the new items is "scoop sandwiches," a layer of ice cream with doughnuts in it, served between a sliced doughnut that can be topped with a variety of items, like vanilla, or chocolate. New milkshakes made from the doughnut ice cream can be topped, of course, with doughnuts, as well as toppings like Oreo bits.The doughnuts themselves are getting an upgrade; customers will have the option to add five different glazes and ten toppings.The company said the design is coming at a time of growth for the once-struggling chain. It plans to open 450 shops globally by the end of 2022. Of those, 45 new shops will be in the United States within the next year.Krispy Kreme will also remodel its 350 stores in the United States. But each store might not be as elaborate as its North Carolina store because menu items and store features will vary depending on location and store size.Krispy Kreme is building a new location in New York's Times Square. It will be open 24 hours a day and include a glaze waterfall. It's scheduled to open early next year.The doughnut chain went private in 2016 when JAB Holdings bought it for .35 billion. (CNN) -- The wildflower super bloom that brought magnificent swaths of color and hordes of lookie-loos to California is coming to an end.The city of Lake Elsinore on Monday declared, with more than a little relief, that the super bloom is nearly over, with the hillsides fading from orange to green as poppies drop their petals and begin to wither.The poppies are no longer visible from Interstate 15, so visitors now have to hike more than a mile to see what's left of the flower display, city officials said."We survived the poppy apocalypse!" the city posted on its Instagram page."The Super Bloom has been unlike any event we have ever experienced before," Mayor Steve Manos said in a news release. "The extreme beauty of our hillsides that drew attention from around the world is now diminishing quickly, and our residents sure are eager for things to get back to normal."The flowers could be seen from space, but thousands of people came to Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore to get a closer look.The spectacle was so popular that authorities at one point restricted access to Walker Canyon because tourists were jamming traffic, crushing flowers and overflowing toilets.Just 4,658 visitors used the Walker Canyon shuttle last weekend, down from 12,062 the prior weekend, city officials said.Flower fans can still get their super bloom fix in other parts of the state, though.Blooms at the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, in Los Angeles County, are expected to continue through April, officials there said.They urged visitors to stay on the trails to avoid crushing the delicate flowers and to leave dogs, bikes and drones at home.A couple last month landed a helicopter in the reserve to skip the lines. (KGTV) ¡ª Disneyland cast members, fans, and local officials rallied outside of Disneyland to call for California to reopen shuttered theme parks throughout the state.Demonstrators, with signs in hand blurring the line between Disney quotes and calls for action, gathered on Saturday to demand Gov. Gavin Newsom announce guidance for Disneyland and other theme parks to reopen amid the pandemic."If Disneyland is open world-wide then why can't Disneyland in Anaheim be open," one employee told KABC. "I think the governor needs to give us a chance to reopen and they keep asking and he keeps pushing the bar farther back."This month, Disney announced it plans to lay off 28,000 employees partially because of California's reluctance to reopen theme parks. The parks have been closed since mid-March when many coronavirus closures began.The guidance was reportedly set to be released soon in September, until Newsom said that the state will take its time before issuing rules."We are going to be led by a health-first framework and we¡¯re going to be stubborn about it," Newsom said earlier this month.
