SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A winter storm warning was issued for San Diego County’s mountains as a cold storm hit the region Monday..The warning is in place from 8 a.m. Monday through 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.“The agency says heavy snow and strong winds are expected. Plan on difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Monday. Tree branches could fall as well,” forecasters said.Total snow accumulations of two to six inches are expected with localized amounts of 12 to 18 inches. The heaviest snow is expected to impact areas above 5,500 feet, however, some snow is expected down to 4,500 feet.Accompanying the snow are heavy winds of 20 to 40 miles per hour.RELATED: Check today's forecast in your area“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the National Weather Service advised.A high surf advisory also takes the place of a beach hazards statement as the storm approaches. The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. Sunday through 10 a.m. Wednesday for San Diego County coastal areas.Surf begins to build Sunday, peaking Monday afternoon through Tuesday, the agency says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A small coffee shop in Carmel Mountain Ranch is now the world's best coffee roaster.Mostra Coffee just won Roast Magazine's top honor as the 2020 Roaster of the Year."It was a really far fetched, big dream of ours to one day achieve one day," said Mostra Coffee co-founder Jelynn Malone. "So the fact we were able to achieve it in six years is mind-blowing to us."Malone started the company with a few friends in a garage in 4S Ranch. They were looking for ways to help poor people in the Philippines and learned that buying coffee from local farmers can help provide money and jobs to the region."It was rooted in good and wanting to help," said Malone. "We just believed in our mission so much that we thought, you know, let's just go for it. What it's become now is just surreal and amazing."Right now, Mostra Coffee has one shop in Carmel Mountain Ranch, but they have plans to expand. They're opening a second location in 4S Ranch in March and just signed a lease for a spot in Mira Mesa.Malone said their passion for coffee is what's fueled their success."It's very similar to wine," she said. "It'll taste anywhere from peaches to chocolates, to tea leaf flavor notes to blueberry. There are so many different flavor notes you can get out of coffee that I don't think people realize, and you get to do that in specialty coffee."In addition to the new locations, Mostra is expanding into the instant coffee business. They just launched a line of single-serve instant coffee packs."Now you can enjoy Mostra coffee when you're flying or camping or at work or rushing in the morning and don't have time to come into the store," said Malone.Through all the expansion, Malone said they plan to keep the small-batch mentality that brought them this far."The community's been so supportive that I think people will really appreciate having more access to Mostra." 1889

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid the recent protests, a woman once known as the "fugitive soccer mom" is now shining a spotlight on the story of another mother.Among those taking a stand against racial injustice is a small group holding up signs supporting a woman you likely haven't heard about."It serves no purpose to have her in prison," said Susan LeFevre.LeFevre, one of the women holding a sign, is someone you likely have heard of. For more than three decades, the Carmel Valley mother of three had lived a double life, as Marie Walsh.At the age of 19, she was sentenced to 10 to 20 years for a heroin sale in Michigan. Fourteen months later, she climbed a prison fence and began a new life. A police tip led to her arrest and a tidal wave of publicity. More than a year later, she was released from a Michigan prison."I feel bad about the effect on my whole family. We're doing better the last couple of years," said LeFevre.LeFevre says so many years later, her family is still healing. She and her husband divorced several years ago. Since her release, LeFevre, who now lives in Pacific Beach, has advocated for non-violent offenders with long sentences, including a woman she bonded with during the second prison stay: Tracy Cowan, a single mother of three who was sentenced to 20 to 40 years after shes says a bag of drugs belonging to her boyfriend dealer was found in her basement. Cowan has served 18 years."Racism is putting people like Tracy (in prison), ripping her from her children, two of them ended up homeless," said LeFevre.LeFevre says Cowan didn't have the resources to defend herself, a familiar reason for the disproportionate prison rates for African Americans."Eighteen years is absurd when murderers are getting out before her. That's why I'm trying to bring attention to cases like hers. While on a trip back to California for a medical appointment her roommate said Semper had run away.“I had so many nightmares of what, where is he? Why did I not get a phone call? SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An 18-month-old toddler ingested marijuana at a home in San Ysidro, San Diego Police said.Officers said a nurse at Sharp Chula Vista called them Sunday about 5:30 p.m. about the incident.The child ingested the pot at a home on Beyer Blvd and was taken to Rady Children's Hospital, the nurse said.San Diego Police said child abuse investigators are looking into the matter. 399
