SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Resources are available throughout San Diego County for victims of domestic violence who believe their situation may turn life threatening.“There’s nothing more tragic than this happening. This is exactly what we never want to see happen again,” said Heather Finlay with the YWCA. Finlay says she was devastated after learning of the mother and her children killed over the weekend. YWCA offers an emergency shelter and transitional housing for parents and families dealing with domestic violence. According to SANDAG, in 2018, more than 17,000 domestic violence incidents were reported in San Diego County. “Leaving an intimate partnership is never easy especially if there are children involved,” said Yvette Lopez-Cooper with the San Diego Family Justice Center. The order doesn’t become active until the abuser is served and made aware of the action. “Many times, these court orders do work and the violent behaviors stops. In cases where the court order is ignored and the violence escalates it’s important for that individual to develop a safety care plan,” she added. A safety care plan includes having a packed bag somewhere safe with clothes and copies of personal documents and planning an escape route. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rising temperatures are increasing the wildfire danger in San Diego County. Monday morning's fires near Webster are the third group of fires sparked by homeless people in a matter of months. Neighbors in the area say they are getting nervous. Edna Wallis has been living in her home for three years. As the weather heats up, she says the brush behind her home becomes a safety hazard. "I start rinsing the patio when the days are extremely hot and dry," says Wallis. "We rinse it, but it's not much."Less than five minutes from her home, a fire sparked off Home Avenue early Monday morning. Among brush and a lot of trash, crews worked to put out the flames that started inside of a homeless encampment. "I'm nervous. I'm very nervous because I'm very close to this area," says Wallis. "All of the neighborhood is dry."There have been other fires in the area as well. A homeless camp caught fire near I-805 and I-15 last week. A blaze also sparked in the same area in March. This fire slightly backed up traffic as crews work to put the flames out that started inside of a tent. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County is taking another jab at tackling the housing crisis. In a press conference Wednesday, Supervisor Dianne Jacob revealed a set of pre-approved plans to build granny flats throughout the county. Homeowners can choose between plans for a 600 or 1,200 square foot designs. The program can help homeowners save up to ,000 in design and permit fees. Tom Tanner recently built a granny flat on his home in Lakeside. "I was looking for that additional income to offset the cost of everything," said Tanner. "If it’s doable, yea, do it it all comes down to the numbers, how much they can afford what they’re going to get back."The county is currently working on developing four other designs for homeowners to choose from. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Real estate company Zillow launched a new service in San Diego Monday that gives homeowners another option for selling their property.The service, called Zillow Offers, will present a cash offer to homeowners who want to sell their home as-is, without the need for open houses or renovations.This is the second market in California that Zillow has offered the service. In the last quarter, Zillow charged an average fee of 7.5% on transactions in the cities it currently operates.“Are they going to get top dollar? No, they are not,” said Mark Goldman, a loan officer and a former real estate professor.On the flip side, Goldman realizes the advantage comes in the form of convenience.“What they are getting is turning the house into cash very quickly and with the least amount of hassle,” said Goldman.In San Diego, realtor Kyle Whissel will be working with Zillow on the ground to act as Zillow’s buying agent as well as their selling agent once the home is market-ready.“We’ll give [Zillow] our opinion of value, they’ll punch that into their algorithm and that will spit it out a price to the homeowner,” Whissel said.The homeowner will then decide if they want to sell at that price, after which they can set a close date within as little as 5 days.“Zillows goal is to come in at market value, make a little bit of improvements, similar to improvements someone would make to put their home on the market,” said Whissel. “Once those are made, we’ll put it back on market at the new market value.” 1527
