Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed an executive order on Thursday that granted pardons to people who have been convicted of possessing one ounce or less of marijuana. “We are finally cleaning up some of the inequities of the past by pardoning 2,732 convictions for Coloradans who simply had an ounce of marijuana or less," Polis said. "It’s ridiculous how being written up for smoking a joint in the 1970s has followed some Coloradans throughout their lives and gotten in the way of their success."This pardon applies to all state-level convictions of possession for one ounce or less of marijuana. Read the full executive order here. Polis said too many Coloradans have "been followed their entire lives by a conviction for something that is no longer a crime, and these convictions have impacted their job status, housing, and countless other areas of their lives."In June, Polis signed the bipartisan HB 20-1424 Social Equity Licensees In Regulated Marijuana, which was sponsored by Rep. James Coleman, Sen. Julie Gonzales and Sen. Vicki Marble, including an amendment sponsored by Sen. Gonzales. This authorizes the governor to grant pardons to people who were convicted of possessing up to two ounces of marijuana. Individuals who fall in this category don't need to apply for the pardon. Those who were convicted of municipal marijuana crimes, or individuals arrested or issued a summons without a conviction, aren't included in the pardons. This new law went into effect in October. NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - With intricate, meticulous designs, one look and you’d think Newport News resident Karen Freidt has been baking for years."I've never cooked this much in my whole life," she stated. The recent NASA retiree turned pie sculpture, is turning heads with her new and very detailed hobby. She says the calling to create came to her in a dream."Something woke me up and it was like September 3rd, on your way home, out of your name into your color," she described. So Karen says she wrote down the dream in her phone. "One one of the things I thought about is how can I help others with my art ," said Freidt. After battling pneumonia and being confined to her home during COVID-19 she whipped up a few the tasty treats and posted the edible art on Facebook."The first two pies I posted on Facbeook went viral within a couple days," she said. Within a few days her creative crusts grabbed the attention of Anna Sui, one of New York City's most recognized fashion designers."First thing I said, was how can I confirm this is really you," she stated. "I found out she wanted to use the pies in New York Spring Fashion Week."It took Freidt more than 15 hours to make the pie fashions now garnering national attention."She used the pies prominently in her media, I was shocked," she said. But Freidt hasn't forgotten those here at home. She's already raised more than ,000 for the Peninsula Food Bank, auctioning off her decadent designs."It makes me feel we are all in this together, and the world is so much smaller then you realize," said Freidt. To donate to the Karen's cause for the food bank, click here. "I just know they killed my son and they shouldn't have," said William Lewis, Jr. about the 18-year-old gas station clerk who fatally shot his son Monday night. It happened at the 76 gas station on Detroit's east side. Detroit police said when the clerk saw Joshua Lewis, 30, allegedly stealing from a coin machine, he picked up an AK-47 and fired a single shot through the safety glass. Lewis was killed by the round that pierced through the safety glass. "A quarter machine. My son got killed over a quarter machine," Lewis said. The gas station clerk, who is the owner's brother, was arrested. Prosecutors are reviewing a warrant request in the case. Family members and others dispute the allegation that Joshua was stealing from the machine. They said he was playing a video game that malfunctioned and he was shaking the machine in an attempt to get his money back. "Whatever he did, he didn't deserve to die," said Emily Rippy, Joshua's mother. "Now I don't have my son."Community activists from several organizations held a press conference at the gas station Wednesday to make it known that they don't ever want to see the gas station open as long as it's in the hands of its current owner or his relatives. A spokesperson for the City of Detroit's Buildings, Safety Engineering, and Environmental Department (BSEED) said the gas station does not have a license to operate or a certificate of compliance. City officials said they are working with the police department and the law department to formally close down the business. A GoFundMe has been set up to help the Lewis family with funeral costs. Hundreds of people had to be rescued from fast-rising flood waters in the Midwest as several areas dealt with historic flooding that washed out roads and bridges. For many, all they have left is what they could grab from their homes before fleeing. Outside Omaha, Nebraska, animal rescue groups worked to save dozens of farm animals in the area, but others had to be left behind. Weather experts say, so far, 38 spots in the Midwest have reported record-high river levels, most of it caused by rain and melting snow. More evacuations could be on the way as floodwaters head downstream. The governors in Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin have declared states of emergency, and some areas could see more chances of rain throughout the week. 745
