STUART, Fla. - A Martin County woman is turning 90 years old this week and got a huge surprise to help her celebrate the milestone.She has some of the best stories you'll hear, and her impact on the community makes her a treasured part of Martin County's history.Evelyn Deggeller thought she was going to a formal event at a SkyBlue Jet Aviation hangar at Witham Field Thursday, but her friend, Suzanne Deuser, had a big surprise planned.Deggeller, who once owned a plane and has a pilot's license, was treated to an hour-long flight from SkyBlue Jet Aviation to Jupiter and back.When she landed, a brass band was waiting for her, along with friends, family and city and county leaders."This is all for you," Deuser told Deggeller. "I sure did not expect this," Deggeller said.Deggeller has lived a story-book worthy life that has been centered around bringing other people joy.She and her father performed magic as a traveling duo across the country. WPTV Evelyn Deggeller of Stuart used to travel across the U.S. performing magic with her father and owned exotic animals. "I did what they call stage magic. No cards, nothing up close. It was all big pieces that were on stage," Deggeller said.She recalled pulling live rabbits out of hats."The best thing I do now is making money disappear," she laughed.She owned a chimpanzee and an elephant named Dixie, who gave her a lot of laughs. One time, she said Dixie was caught eating the neighbor's flowers. She could grab Dixie by the ear and walk her home.But her local claim to fame came in 1959 when she helped re-start the Martin County fair."The fair had been on before, but the war came, and everything was changed. After the war, they wanted to start up again," Deggeller said.She was just the woman to do it.Deggeller built a career supplying county and state fairs with rides and attractions and food stands.She has also been a part of charitable service organizations in Stuart, including Soroptimist International of Stuart.She holds keys to numerous cities, and Stuart Vice Mayor Eula Clarke presented her Thursday with Stuart's key to the city."I've enjoyed everything that I've been fortunate enough to do," Deggeller said.The celebration was just one more memory to take with her into her next decade."I'm shooting for 100. The Associated Press has obtained text messages that a U.S. Census Bureau supervisor in Alabama sent to workers that told them how to fake counts of households by entering misleading data.According to the AP's report, texts from the supervisor in October laid out how census takers should fake data to mark a household as only having one resident, even if census takers were unsure of how many people lived in the home.The supervisor's text instructed census takers to mark a household as only being occupied by a single person if they made two failed attempts to interview the residents and two failed attempts to reach landlords or neighbors."You are to clear the case indicating occupied by 1," said the text from the census supervisor in Dothan, Alabama.A census worker from Florida who traveled to Alabama to help with areas lagging behind on the county provided the texts to the AP on condition of anonymity to protect her privacy.The Census Bureau says it's investigating and hasn't identified any data irregularities.The attempts to suppress the population count came as Trump administration officials successfully shortened the Census schedule by two weeks. Critics contend that the count was cut short so the Trump administration could enforce an order to exclude undocumented immigrants from the count.Under-counting a given area in the Census suppresses the allocation of resources to that area and skews congressional districts.The Associated Press reports the Census Bureau has denied that it attempted to falsify information during the 2020 census, but the AP has reported that similar instructions were sent to other regions. 1649

With Christmas just 10 days away, public health experts are urging families to be cautious around the holiday to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.“If people interpret the vaccine being here as an opportunity to lower their guard, then, unfortunately, we’re going to see more sorrow and death, and those are all preventable,” said USF Health professor Dr. Marissa Levine.Since the Thanksgiving holiday, we’ve recently seen an upward trend in COVID-19 cases in the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Levine points to an increase in hospitalizations, too, though not as steep of an increase as what we saw this summer.“This is happening with Christmas and New Year’s just around the corner, so all bets are off in terms of what happens after that,” said Levine. “That will really depend on what we do between now and the beginning of January.”The CDC says celebrating the holiday virtually or with people you live with poses the lowest risk for spread. It says getting together with family and friends who don’t live with you can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19.If you are having a small gathering, the CDC suggests limiting the number of people, hosting outdoors rather than indoors, and having supplies like extra masks available. If inside, experts recommend opening windows and doors to increase ventilation. “I would really push people to do everything possible to try to keep your distance, and if you can’t, wear your face coverings all the time that you’re not eating,” said Levine.The CDC also says people who have COVID symptoms, are waiting on test results, or are at an increased risk of severe illness should not go to an in-person celebration. If you travel, the CDC says testing does not eliminate all risk, but it can help make travel safer. Still, it says the safest thing to do is to stay home.“I think the real message here is there’s hope. There’s lots of hope ahead.
